Grammar Games: 1. Parts of Speech

Children participate in a series of grammar games involving parts of speech, alphabetical order, word building, and punctuation. The games are designed to be completed in small groups or pairs as stations. Children receive envelopes or sheets containing words or sentences to sort, order, analyze, or punctuate correctly. They then self-check their work against answer keys and record their results on language challenge sheets to assess their understanding of various grammar concepts.

Grammar Games

Children work in small groups or pairs and move around the stations.

1. Parts of Speech
Children are given an envelope containing different words and are to sort
them into nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Once done, they will check
their answers against an answer sheet.

2. Alphabetical Order
Children are given different sets of words to sort alphabetically. They will be
colour coded to make sure that children know which words go in which lists.
Colour coding will also be used to differentiate.

3. Countdown
In a countdown style, children have to come up with as many words as they
can from 9 letters at random. Points can be awarded for this, e.g. letter score
per word, bonus for using all 9 letters.

4. Word Breakdown
Children are given a word which contains a root, suffix(es) and prefix(es)
which is broken down into it’s constituent parts, e.g. un-will-ing-ly. They are
to come up with as many words as possible that contain each part. e.g. for un
they could have undress, unopened, undone etc.

5. Speech Marks
Children will be given some unpunctuated sentences containing speech. Their
job will be to put speech marks in the correct places. Additional clauses can
be added for the purpose of differentiation. Where facilities allow, this can be
done on the IWB and printed out as evidence.

6. Apostrophes
Children will be given a set of sentences that all contain words with
apostrophes in them. They are to decide whether the sentences are correct or
not. This can be done with a correct/incorrect box to post the sentences into
or they can stick them into a pre-made table.

7. Homophones
Children are given an envelope of homophones and they are to match the
words up. If time allows, they can write a sentence with one of the
homophones from each pair.

8. Conjunctions
Children are given an envelope of clauses from sentences. They will be asked
to join the sentences together with the correct joining word.
