B4C - B4H (4TH Floor)

This document provides the design calculations for a reinforced concrete beam labeled B4-C to B4-H. It includes determining loads, fixed-end moments, relative stiffness, distribution factors, moments at supports and midspan, checking the trial section, ultimate moment capacity, and design of the reinforcement and web reinforcement. The maximum moment is found to be 157.776 kN-m at the supports, and the trial section of 400mm depth and 470mm width is determined to be adequate.

DESIGN OF B4-C TO B4-H

GIVEN:

f’c = 21 MPa
fy = 400 MPa
SLAB THICKNESS = 0.125 m

ASSUME:
BEAM DIMENSION : 300 mm by 500 mm

SOLUTION:

1) LOADS

 DEAD LOADS

Slab = (23.6 Kn/m 3)(0.125 m) (2 m) = 5.9 kN/m

3
Beam = 0.30 m (0.50 m) (23.6 Kn/m ) = 3.54 kN/m
Floor finish = 1.1 (2 m) = 2.2 kN/m
Ceiling = 0.24 (2) = 0.48 kN/m
Partition = 1 (1) = 1 kN/m
DL = 13.12 kN/m

 LIVE LOAD

LL = 4.788 (2) = 9.58 kN/m

 FACTORED LOADS
WU = 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL
= 1.2 (13.12 kN/m) + 1.6 (9.58 kN/m)
WU = 31.07 kN/m

 DEAD LOADS

Slab = (23.6 Kn/m 3)(0.125 m) (1.75 m) = 5.16 kN/m

Beam = 0.30 m (0.50 m) (23.6 Kn/m 3 ) = 3.54 kN/m
Floor finish = 1.1 (1.75 m) = 1.93 kN/m
Ceiling = 0.24 (1.75) = 0.42 kN/m
Partition = 1 (1) = 1 kN/m
DL’ = 12.05 kN/m

 LIVE LOAD

LL = 4.788 (1.75) = 8.38 kN/m

 FACTORED LOADS
W’U = 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL
= 1.2 (12.05 kN/m) + 1.6 (8.38 kN/m)
W’U = 27.87 kN/m

BY MOMENT DISTRIBUTION:

5) MOMENT AT SUPPORTS

M AB = 157.776 Kn - m
M BA = -126.597 Kn - m
M BC =126.597 Kn - m
M CB = -67.643 Kn - m
M CD = 67.643 Kn - m
M DC =- 47.441 Kn - m

R = 3.97

SOLVE FOR THE TRIAL SECTION

Ф = 0.90

Mu = 157.704 kN-m

157.704 X 10⁶
req’d d =
√ 0.90 ( 300 )( 3.97)

req’d d = 383.57 mm

available d = 500 – 70 = 430 mm > req’d d = 383.57 mm (OK!)

Thus,
USE d = 400 mm ; h = 470 mm

b = 300 mm

8) ULTIMATE MOMENT CAPACITY

At Support:
Mu = Ф bd 2 R
= 0.9 (300)( 400)2 (3.97)
Mu = 171.504 k N-m > Mu = 157.704 kN-m

Thus,
the beam is singly reinforced.

At Midspan:

Mu = Ф bd 2 R
= 0.9 (300)( 400)2 (3.97)
Mu = 171.504 k N-m > Mu = 84.207 kN-m

Thus,
Compression bars are not needed.

Vc =93,484.54 N

Ф Vc = 0.85 ( 93.48 )
Ф Vc = 79.46 kN

SHEAR CARIED BY THE STIRRUPS:

Vs act = Vu - Ф Vc

Vs act = 73.784 kN
ALLOWABLE SHEAR AT STIRRUPS:

Vs allow = √ f ' c bd
6

6
Vs allow = 77.90 kN > Vs act = 73.784 kN

Thus, web reinforcement must be provided.

Thus, USE ф 10mm stirrups spaced @ 0.1 m o.c.
