INTRODUCTION
A. This Non Destructive Test Manual has been prepared by the Technical
Publications Department of Piaggio Aero Industries S.p.A. and is designated
Report No. 180-MAN-0300-01107 within the company.
The manual is compiled in accordance with Specification 100 of the Air Transport
Association (ATA) of America. The specification is commonly referred to as
ATA100.
B. The manual provides the inspections procedures for the P.180 AVANTI and P.180
AVANTI II component structure.
2. Revisions
A. Regular Revisions
From time to time it may be necessary for the manufacturer to amend, add or
delete information and instructions within the manual to improve the safe and
efficient operation of the airplane. The manual is therefore revised whenever
considered necessary. A Record of Revisions (ROR) is provided at the front of this
manual and the operator (manual user) is advised to make sure that the record is
kept up-to-date.
Publications are assigned a revision code which appears on the title page and
consists for the basic publication of the letter "A" and the number "0"; subsequent
revisions are identified by the change of the code from "A0" to "A1" for the first
revision to the basic publication, "A2" for the second one, etc. If it is necessary to
completely reissue a publication owing to the extent of content and format
changes, the code will change to the next successive letter of the alphabet at each
new issue (for example B for the first reissue, C for the second reissue, etc.).
B. Filing of Revisions
(1) Regular Revisions
Each copy of a regular revision to the manual will be accompanied by an
attached Letter of Transmittal advising the manual holder of the method for
incorporating the revision into the manual. The Letter of Transmittal will
include revision highlight pages which will give a summary of the reasons for
revision/ addition/deletion of text or illustrations.

C. Revision Symbols
Additions, deletions and revisions to existing text will be identified by a revision
bar (black line) in the left-hand margin of the page, adjacent to the change.
When technical changes cause expansion or deletion of text which results in
unchanged text appearing on a different page, a revision bar will be placed in the
left-hand margin adjacent to the page number of all affected pages providing no
other revision bar appears on the page.
These pages will be updated to the current regular revision date.
When extensive technical changes are made to existing text, resulting in complete
retype of copy, a single revision bar will appear the full length of the text.
A List of Effective Pages (LOEP) is provided at the beginning of the manual. All pages
in the manual are listed in sequence, together with the latest date of issue/revision of
each page.
4. Table of Contents
A Table of Contents (TOC) is provided at the beginning of the manual; it lists the
contents of the manual, enabling the manual user to locate information quickly. The
page is updated and reissued with regular revisions when appropriate.
5. Effectivity
When the information on a particular page applies to a specific airplane or airplanes, the
manufacturer's serial number of the airplane(s) is given in the effectivity space at the
lower left hand corner of the page. Where the space is left blank, the information applies
to all airplanes.

This instruction describes the procedures for the coin tapping inspection.
A. Applicability
B. Inspection Material
– The equipment required for the coin tapping inspection is a copper coin 38mm
diameter and 5mm thickness.
C. Test
– Keep the coin between the fingers at an end and tap by its edge on the part to
be inspected until you have examined the whole surface.
– Pay attention to the sound that gets out from the item; sound tonality changes
have to be evaluated referring to the geometry of the structure under control,
but a hollow sound normally means delaminated or unbonded area.
NOTE: It is necessary to do this control in quite silent areas in order to detect any
sound tonality change.
D. Acceptability
– Carefully define areas with hollow sound and evaluate them referring to the
acceptance requirements reported in Table 1, Table 2, Table 3 and Table 4.
– Areas get out sound different from the above are acceptable.

confirmed - Fokker bond tester or equivalent equipment can be used for
metal to metallic honeycomb bonded joint and ultrasonic for graphite/glass

NOTE: For horizontal stabilizer and forward wing these max. allowable
defects are not acceptable in the area surrounding the forward wing-
fuselage fittings and the horizontal stabilizer-vertical fin fittings up to
304 mm (one foot/outboard of fittings).
If defects (porosity, delamination, void) are noted, immediately notify
to Piaggio Product Support location and dimension of defects.

This instruction describes the procedures for the Fokker Bond Tester inspection.
Fokker bond tester is a complementary inspection method to coin tapping test whole
defective areas have to be confirmed or strictly defined.
A. Applicability
(1) Inboard Wing Flap
(2) Fwd Wing Flap
(3) Aileron
B. Inspection Material
The equipment required for the Fokker Bond Tester inspection is Fokker Bond
Tester MOD. 70 or similar.
The reference sample shall represent production components structure and shall
contain known defects with dimension and location similar to those shown on the
Page 2-3-4, which represents the master test used by Piaggio Laboratory. Perform
the calibration of the above instrument on the reference sample to make sure that
the equipment used is operating and is correctly set to show the known artificial
defects in the reference sample.
D. Test
Inspect the items with the equipment and parameters set for the calibration. The
Page 5 reports a reference setting for this inspection.

A. All defects are prepared using two layer of FEP film 0.05 mm thick and 15 mm
diameter.
All the defects are located upper surface side. To localize the defects position on the
master test piece use the P 180 US/1 drawing.
B. The following dB values are to be set to detect the relevant defects on the master
test piece.
The defects identified by numbers 2-5-9 are to be detected by Fokker Bond Tester.

This instruction describes the procedures for the inspection by Ultrasonic Equipment
(Pulse Echo).
A. Applicability
B. Inspection Material
The equipment required for the Ultrasonic Pulse Echo inspection is KrautKramer
USM25; probe Harasonic 2.25 MHz, diameter 0,25" or KK ALPHA 2.25 MHz
diameter 0,5" and Reference Standards P180 S.P.03/06/09/. Similar equipment can
be used.
C. Test
– Apply the probe with the suitable fluid to the applicable reference standard in
a non-defective area.
– Set the back echo in the right side of the screen while keeping the first echo in
the left side.
– Set the back echo amplitude to the 80% of the screen height.
– Inspect the defective area.
– The back echo must decrease below 50% with or without an additional
intermediate echo.
– Inspect the item using this setting.
– When the back echo decreases below 50% either with or without an additional
intermediate echo means that there is a defective area.
– Delimit the defective area on the item and proceed to evaluate its acceptability.

This instruction describes the procedures for the eddy current inspection.

– Standardize the eddy current instrument for balance and lift-off in accordance
with the manufacturer instruction.
– Adjust the basic sensitivity of the instrument to ensure a rapid deflection from
the applicable notch in the reference standard.
– Inspect the item on the requested area.
– If probe passes over a crack, the meter needle will deflect rapidly and return to
approximately the original reading.

NOTE: If no fractures are detected, the test must be repeated after 3000 FH.
If one or more cracks are detected, perform NDT (dye penetrants).
If the cracks externally detected have a length of 0.5", the profile(s) must
be replaced.
Following the replacement repeat the procedure after 6000 FH.

A. PREPARATION
Carefully clean the item to be examined with relevant solvents (Acetone or MEK)
applied by paintbrush or spray. The items must be uniformly degreased; check the
absence of stains, dust, grease and other foreign matters; the items must also be
dry and must have a temperature lower than 40°C.
C. WASHING
Spray the remover on the item until the penetrant in excess is completely removed
from the surface. To perform this check it is necessary to obscure the area and
check the washing with black light. To remove the penetrant in excess it is possible
to use water (pressure max. 40 P.S.I.) instead of remover. Use wet cloths without
rubbing the item surface.
D. DRYING
After the washing with water dry the item with paper or clean cloths without
rubbing. Do not blow compressed air. Drying is not necessary if remover has been
used.
E. DETECTION
Apply the developer with sprayer or use dry developer powder. If use the sprayer,
slightly spray the area to get a thin layer of developer on the item. Keep the
developer on the surface for about 10’.
F. INSPECTION
Obscure the area (2 foot candles max.) and perform the inspection with black light
(minimum intensity 1000 W/cm2). Perform white light inspection (minimum light
intensity 100 foot candles).
G. CLEANING
After the inspection, carefully clean the item making sure that all the products
used for the inspection have been removed.

This instruction describes the procedures for the inspection by ultrasonic equipment
(through transmission method).

The reference sample shall represent production components structure and shall
contain known defects with dimention and location similar to those shown on the
pages 2-3-4 which represents the master test piece used by Piaggio Laboratory.
Perform the calibration of the above instrument on the reference sample to make
sure that the equipment used is operating and it is correctly set to show the
artificial defects which have been put in the reference sample.
D. Test
Inspect the items with the equipment and parameters used for the calibration. In
this section page 5 reports a reference setting for through transmission ultrasonic
equipment.

A. All defects are prepared using two layer of FEP film 0.05 mm thick and 15 mm
diameter.
All the defects are located upper surface side. To localize the defects position on the
master test piece use the P 180 US/1 drawing.
B. The following dB values are to be set to detect the relevant defects on the master
test piece.
The defects identified by numbers 2-5-9 are to be detected by fokker bond tester
equipment.
