Short Quiz 3

• You may compose your answers in a Word file then submit as PDF, or
you may write them down on a few pieces of paper then submit as
jpeg/jpg file.

• You have 3 hours to answer these 5 problems.

• Submission is via test link.

• This will also serve as your practice exercise for the problem solving
part of Exam 1.
Problem 1
Compute repeat unit molecular weights for the following:
(a) polytetrafluoroethylene
(b) poly(methyl methacrylate)
(c) nylon 6,6
(d) poly(ethylene terephthalate)
Problem 2
The number-average molecular weight of a polystyrene is 500,000
g/mol. Compute the degree of polymerization.
Problem 3
(a) Compute the repeat unit molecular weight of polypropylene.
(b) Compute the number-average molecular weight for a polypropylene
for which the degree of polymerization is 15,000.
Problem 4
Molecular weight data for some polymer are tabulated here. Compute the following:
(a) the number-average molecular weight
(b) the weight-average molecular weight
(c) If it is known that this material’s degree of polymerization is 477, which one of the polymers in
Problem 1 is this polymer? Why?
Problem 5
The density of totally crystalline polypropylene at room temperature is
0.946 g/cm3. Also, at room temperature the unit cell for this material is
monoclinic with the following lattice parameters:

If the volume of a monoclinic unit cell, Vmono, is a function of these

lattice parameters as

determine the number of repeat units per unit cell.
