CC’s Voice: Good day, Young Professionals! This course aims to enhance your
readiness in the world of work through various components. Component B orients
you in writing a winning (effective) cover letter and effective resume.

CO: As soon to be young professionals, it is expected that you are proficient in

writing an effective application letter, applying the format and mechanics of writing.
Moreover, you are also expected to construct a comprehensive resume highlighting
your knowledge, competencies, interest, and skills.

Let us begin!

Big Picture

Week 6-7: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): Upon successful completion, you will
be able to demonstrate job seeking skills using a career planning process that
includes self-assessment, personal development, and a career portfolio as a way to
gain initial entry into the workplace. Specifically, you are expected to:

a. Write a cover letter following the prescribe business format for

application.
b. Write a resume outlining knowledge, skills, and career exposure in
relevant field.

Big Picture in Focus: ULOa. Write a cover letter following the prescribe business
format for application.

Metalanguage

In this section, the most essential terms relevant to the pre-employment and
to demonstrate ULOa will be operationally defined to establish a common frame of
reference as to how the texts work in your chosen field or career. You will encounter
these terms as we go through with this component. Please refer to these definitions
in case you will encounter difficulty in the in understanding educational concepts.

Cover Letter- A written letter shows the applicant's personal style, explains
the applicant's qualifications for the job and formally asks for an interview.

Essential Knowledge

To perform the aforesaid big picture (unit learning outcomes) for the first three
(2) weeks of the course, you need to fully understand the following essential
knowledge that will be laid down in the succeeding pages. Please note that you are
not limited to exclusively refer to these resources. Thus, you are expected to utilize
other books, research articles and other resources that are available in the
university’s library e.g. ebrary, search.proquest.com etc.

Your cover letter is a potential employer’s first impression of you and can be the
most vital part of the application packet. A well written letter entices your potential
employer to read further your resume. A poorly constructed cover letter may doom
your resume to the “No Need to Read” pile. The same can be said for a scholarship
application or any other business engagement that requires introductory letter. It is
important to highlight your skills, knowledge, and experience. These will indicate
what you can contribute and pursue to the company. Effective cover letters must
convey a sense of purpose and provide information that will entice the interest of the
readers. Researching the employer, scholarship grant or sponsoring organization
prior to writing the cover letter will give you the opportunity to effectively personalize
your letter.

1. Always include a cover letter when submitting or

sending your resume.
2. Unless the advertisement specifies “no phone calls
please” and the name is not given in the ad, find out
the name and title of the individual who will be
receiving your letter. Make sure you spell the name
properly, cited the correct position in the organization
and get the proper abbreviation (Ms. Dr. Ms.).
3. Do not use “for sale” forms letters or photocopies. If
you are applying for several companies, personalize
your letter according to their requirements and
announcements.
4. Use a proper business format for your letters.
5. Make sure the letter is PERFECT! Spelling,
punctuation, and grammar count. Have someone
proofread the letter before submitting it.
External Relations and International Affairs Office
Embassy Area
Bolton Street, Davao City
Telefax: (082)226-3526

1. Create the letter on a computer word processing

program and use a laser printer. Use a good quality
paper, at least substance 20. Cheap, flimsy paper
makes your application seem very ordinary. However,
do not use perfumed ones or those flashy colors. Just
plain white.
2. Utilize a one inch margin on all 4 sides. This white
space draws the reader to the body of the letter.
3. In the opening paragraph, tell the reader how you got
to know the information about their job openings and
your intention for the position.
4. Use “I” statements and action verbs when describing
your experience.
5. Get to the point! Employers do not have the luxury of
time reading lengthy letters. A cover letter should
never exceed one page.
6. Focus on the specific skills and interests you possess
that you can offer to the employer. Concentrate on
skills which match the advertised employment
qualifications or the desired program of study, if you
are applying for a scholarship grant. Stress what you
can do for the company or for the institution or the
sponsoring organization, not what the company can do
for you. Sound upbeat and confident. Sell yourself!
7. End by opening doors for meet and greet, meaning
that you look forward to meeting with them and
discussing further your qualifications. Make a specific
suggestion for the next step of the process and follow
up as promised.

1. Is it clear? Does it state exactly what I want to state?

2. Is it concise? Does it state what I want to state in the
fewest possible words?
Before sending 3. Is it well organized?
