Science 10 Quarter 2 LAS 1-5

The document discusses the electromagnetic spectrum and different types of electromagnetic waves. It begins by defining the electromagnetic spectrum as the entire range of light that exists. It then discusses the characteristics and properties of the electromagnetic spectrum, including that waves travel through space, there is a gradual progression from lowest to highest frequency, and that frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional while frequency and energy are directly proportional. The document then discusses the different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays, providing examples of each. Tables and activities are included to help students identify and understand the relationships between wavelength, frequency, and energy across the electromagnetic spectrum.

THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
Electromagnetic spectrum- is the term used by scientists to describe the entire range of
light that exists.

Characteristics of Electromagnetic Spectrum

a. travel through space
b. it is a gradual progression from lowest frequency to the wave of highest frequency.
c. As its wavelength decreases, the frequency increases (inverse proportional
relationship)
d. As frequency increases, energy also increase (direct proportional)
Properties of Electromagnetic Spectrum
a. Frequency(f) - the numbers of waves that pass by a point in one second.
- measured in Hertz (Hz)

b. wavelength (λ) - the distance from the peak of one wave to the peak of the next.
- measured in meters (m)
ACTIVITY 1: “Is It Safe Starter: Electromagnetic Spectrum”
Direction: Indicate whether each statement is True or False. Write your answer on the
blank.
True 1. The term “spectrum” means a continuous sequence or range of light.
False 2. As you move along the spectrum, left to right, the wavelengths increase in
size.
True 3. The electromagnetic spectrum is the complete range of electromagnetic
waves placed in order of increasing frequency.
False 4. The electromagnetic spectrum increases from left to right in wavelength.
False 5. Electromagnetic waves cannot travel through space.
True 6. The number of waves that pass by a point in one second is called frequency.
True 7. The higher the frequency the higher the energy.
True 8. Wavelength is the distance from the peak of one wave to the peak of the next.
True 9. Frequency and wavelength are inversely related to each other.
False 10. A wave with a large wavelength will have a high frequency and high energy.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC (EM) WAVES

1. Radio waves- radio waves are the lowest range of the EM spectrum. It is used
primarily for communications including voice, data and entertainment media.
2. Microwaves- Microwaves fall in the range between radio and infrared. Use for high-
bandwidth communications, radar and as a heat source for microwave ovens and
industrial applications.
3. Infrared- is in the range of the EM spectrum between microwaves and visible light.
Infrared light is invisible to human eyes, but we can feel it as heat if the intensity is
sufficient.
4. Visible light- it is found in the middle of the EM spectrum, between infrared and
ultraviolet. It is defined as the wavelengths that are visible to most human eyes,
includes red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
5. Ultraviolet- it is in the range of the EM spectrum between visible light and X-rays. It
is a component of sunlight; however, it is invisible to the human eye. It has numerous
medical and industrial applications, but it can damage living tissue, can cause sun burn
and even skin cancer.
6. X-rays- X-rays are roughly classified into two types: soft X-rays and hard X-rays. X-
rays are produced by accelerating electrons. It deflects bone fractures.
7. Gamma-rays- it is in the range of the spectrum above soft X-rays. Can cause
damage to living tissue, which makes it useful for killing cancer cells when applied in
carefully measured doses to small regions. Uncontrolled exposure, though, is extremely
dangerous to humans.
ACTIVITY: DO YOU KNOW ME!
Direction: Determine the type of electromagnetic wave based on the given picture.
1. Gamma-rays 2. Infrared

3. X-rays 4. Microwaves

5. Visible Light 6. Radio waves 7. Ultraviolet

THE ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

Electromagnetic waves can be described by their wavelengths, energy, and

frequency. All three describe a different property of light, yet they are related to each
other mathematically. As its wavelength decreases, the frequency increases (inverse
proportional relationship). As frequency increases, energy also increase (direct
proportional relationship).
Table 1 shows the relative wavelength, frequency, and energy of each of the different
types of electromagnetic waves.

ACTIVITY: EXPRESS YOUR THOUGHTS

Direction: Study table 1 and answer the following questions briefly.
1. What is the relationship between frequency and wavelength?
2. What is the relationship between frequency and energy?
3. What is the relationship between wavelength and energy?
4. What is the relationship between the wavelength, frequency and energy of
electromagnetic waves?
