Background
Nepal has high potential of renewable water resources. Most of the rivers flowing from Nepal
Himalaya possesses 6000 rivers including rivulets and tributaries. Estimated 45,610 MW is
feasible for Hydropower generation which is equivalent to 50% theoretical potential of 83,290
MW. The Hydropower system is dominated by run of river schemes in Nepal while storage
scheme have been benefited to control flood, provide irrigation, drinking water supply,
navigation, tourism, aquaculture, and generate revenue. From the beginning, hydropower is used
as the natural water-cycle-based renewable energy, which is reliable, most mature, and cost-
effective technology of power generation. The discharge and river flow depends on the
catchment area, rainfall pattern, and the volume of the water estimates the mechanical energy
produced by the falling or flowing water called hydropower.
Hydropower is an environment friendly source of energy with no pollution
emitting in air or in land, and it also the most efficient method to all. Thus, traditionally
hydropower has been considered environment friendly that it represents a clean and renewable
energy source. The country’s varying topographic and climatic conditions from south tropical to
alpine in north with 80% of the annual rainfall in summer season, distributing both from north-
south and east-west directions. Three major river systems originate from across the Himalayan
range divided in Nepal from east to west the Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali River, major
tributaries of the Ganges river in northern India.
Introduction

Nar Khola Hydropower Project has been identified in January 2020 by a team of professionals
and hydro power experts. It is located on Nar Khola in Nar VDC of Manang District. At the
proposed intake area two tributaries Lapse Khola and Phu Khola adjoins that latter on named as
Nar Khola is one of the biggest tributary of Marsyangdi River.

Salient Feature of Nar Khola Hydropower Project

A tentative description of Nar Khola Hydropower Project based on desk study has been given
below.

Access to the Project Site

This project is located close to Marsyangdi basin. There are many projects on Marsyangdi River.
There exist access roads of Beshisahar – Chame (the Headquarter of Manang District) that
crosses at Koto where the Nar Khola and Marsyangdi River meet. From Koto to project site,
about 14km road is required to reach the project site.
1. Survey license for further studies
The findings from the desk study will be verified with site visit, survey of the area, and field
investigations to further proceed the desk study to "feasibility study” level. Hence obtaining a
survey license is a must before undertaking above said activities. This report is prepared and
submitted to acquire the generation survey license to move further.

Project Location & Coordinate

The headworks of the project will be located somewhere around 3400-3450m of elevation
depending upon geology, stream width, catchment and tributaries, accessibility and topography.
Likewise, the powerhouse will be located at about 3250-3300m of elevation. The project
structures will be located in Nar VDC. The project area does not have any settlements and
villages around it. The longitude and latitude of the points bordering the project area are
presented in Table 1 below.
Table 1: Latitude & Longitude
Point Description Longitude Latitude
1 North east corner 84 15’ 00” E 28 40’ 27” N

2 North west corner 84 13’ 10” E 28 40’ 27” N

3 South east corner 84 15’ 00” E 28 38’ 04” N

4 South west corner 84 13’ 10” E 28 38’ 04” N

Catchment area
The catchment area of Nar Khola at the proposed intake has been estimated to be 625 km 2 by
using 1:50,000 scale Topographical map (fin map). Snow coverage is significant in the
catchment area. The map used to calculate the catchment area of Nar Khola Hydropower Project
intake site has been attached with this report.
Power & Energy
Nar Khola having two major tributaries such as Lapse Khola and Phu Khola is an ungauged river
so published data of Marsyangdi River (St No.439.35) published by DHM have been used for
catchment correlation for the purpose of estimating design flow, power and energy..

Project layout
Brief descriptions of project components are presented below.
a. Weir: The weir will be built on Nar Khola. The length of weir will be small.
b. Desander: There will be a Desander close to the weir on the left bank of the Nar
Khola.
c. Conveyance system: The water from the Desander will be conveyed to Forebay by
canal/tunnel or pipe as appropriate and which will be finalized during feasibility
study. Proper detail will be as per feasibility and IEE study.
d. Forebay/Surge Tank: A forebay/Surge Tank will be built at the end of tunnel or
canal to provide sufficient water and to minimize water hammer effects.
e. Tailrace: A tailrace canal will discharge the water from powerhouse back into Nar
Khola. The exact size and length of tailrace will be determined during feasibility
study.
f. Powerhouse: The powerhouse will be located on the Right bank of Nar Khola and
will be on surface or underground and will house the turbine, generators and control
systems.
g. Transmission line: A 132 kV line will evacuate the generated power to the grid via
the transmission hub being proposed for construction close to nearest power house in
Marsyangdi river basin.

Scope of works
The scope of work is divided into two groups:
(1) Feasibility Study and
(2) Initial Environmental Assessment (IEE)
(3) Detail Design
(4) Construction Works

Market, Customer and competitor

The Public owned Nepal Electricity Authority is the sole buyer of the independent power producer
electricity. The electricity market of Nepal is unbundled at the generation point. Under unbundled market,
more than one generation company can participate and generate power. This prevents monopoly in the
generation market. However, at the distribution and transmission level, the market is bundled meaning
there is only one party responsible for distribution and transmission of the grid electricity. Currently, the
electricity market is dominated by the two institutions:

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA)

Independent Power producer (IPP)

Furthermore, there is an important trade that forms a huge component of the market and is called “Indo-
Nepal Power Trade.

Competition situation in the Market

Source: independent Power producers and power purchase Agreements

Since the demand for power electricity is very high and current production is unable to meet the
demand so generating electricity will have potential market.
