X MF Ʃ N: The Mean Is 26.8

This document provides formulas and steps to calculate various statistical measures from a data set of math test scores. [1] It calculates the mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, first quartile, and third quartile. [2] The mean is 26.8, the median is 26.8, the mode is 27.23, and the range is 24. [3] It also provides the variance as 18.57, the standard deviation as 4.31, the first quartile as 24.55, and the third quartile as 29.16.

Illustrative Example

Given: Scores of sample students in a math test

Note: f=frequency

1. Compute for the mean.

Formula:

Ʃmf
x́=
n
Where:
x̅ = mean
Ʃmf = summation of midpoints
n = total frequency

Notes:
1. m = midpoint of the class (e.g. (40+42)/2 = 41)
2. mf = midpoint multiplied by the frequency of the class (e.g. 41 x 1 = 41)

1206
x́= = 26.8
45

The mean is 26.8

2. Compute for the median.
Formula:

Where:
L = lower boundary point of median class
n = total frequency
cf = Cumulative frequency of the class preceding the median class
f = Frequency of the median class
c = class length of median class (other formulas use I = class interval)

Step 1: Identify the median class.

n/2 = 45/2 = 22.5

Notes:
cf = cumulative frequency
The median class is where the half of the total frequency lies. In the given, halt of the total frequency is
22.5 which is included in 25-27.

Step 2: Compute the median

22.5−11
M =24.5+ ×3 = 26.8
15
Notes:
L or LB = to compute for L, get the lower limit of the class then deduct 0.5 (e.g. for 19-21, the L is 18.5
computed as 19 minus 0.5
cf = note that the cf here is for the preceding class and not the median class

3. Compute for the mode.

Formula:
d1
z=L+ ×i
d 1+ d 2
Where:
z = Mode
L = lower boundary point of mode class
d1 = difference of the frequencies between modal class and previous class
d2 = difference of the frequencies between modal class and next class
i = class interval

Step 1: Identify the modal class

The modal class is the class with the highest frequency.

The modal class in 25 – 27 because it has the highest frequency of 15.

Step 2: Calculate the mode.

10
z=24.5+ × 3 =27.23
10+1

Notes:
d1 = 15 minus 5
d2 = 15 minus 14

4. Calculate the range.

Range = 42.5 – 18.5 = 24

5. Calculate the variance.

817.2
σ 2= =18.57
45−1

6. Calculate the standard deviation.

σ =√ σ 2
σ =√ 18.57 = 4.31

7. Calculate the first quartile.

The formula is the same as the median. However, instead of dividing the n by 2, you will divide the n by
4 to identify the first quartile class.

Step 1: Identify the first quartile class

Q1 = n/4 = 45/4 = 11.25

Step 2: Calculate the first quartile.

11.25−11
Q 1 class=24.5+ ×3 = 24.55
15

8. Calculate the third quartile.

The formula is the same as the median. However, instead of dividing the n by 2, you will multiply ¾ to
the n to identify the third quartile class.
Step 1: Identify the first quartile class
Q3 class = 3n/4 = (3 x 45)/4 = 33.75

Step 2: Calculate the third quartile.

33.75−26
Q 3=27.5+ × 3 = 29.16
14
