Heat Paper 2 PDF

This document provides a sample paper with 10 multiple-choice and numerical questions assessing knowledge of key concepts in heat and calorimetry. The questions cover topics like the effect of pressure on melting/boiling points, definitions of specific heat and latent heat, using calorimetry principles to calculate temperature changes and heat capacities, and reasoning questions about phase changes and heat transfer. It includes the general instructions, marks allocated for each question, and lists the 10 questions.

Chapter 5- Heat
Sample Paper-2
MM.25

General Instruction:
I. All questions are compulsory.
II. Question No. 1 and 2 carry one mark each.
III. Question No. 3 to 5 carries two marks each.
IV. Question No. 6 to 9 carries three marks each.
V. Question No.10 carries 5 marks.

Question 1: (1)
What is the effect of increase in pressure on the melting point of ice and boiling point of
water?

Question 2: (1)
Define specific latent heat of fusion of ice. Give its SI unit.

Question 3: (2)
Give two reasons as to why copper is preferred over other metals for making calorimeter.

Question 4: (2)
State the principle of Calorimetry.

Question 5: (2)
A hot solid of mass 60 g at 100 ºC is placed in 100 g of water at 18 ºC. The final steady
temperature recorded is 20 ºC. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid.

Question 6: (3)
10 g of ice at 0 ºC absorbed 5,460 J of heat to melt and change into water at 50 ºC. Calculate
the specific latent heat of fusion of ice. Given specific heat capacity of water is 4,200 J kg-1
ºC-1.

Question 7: (3)
A piece of metal at 10 º C has a mass of 50 g. When it is immersed in a current of steam at
100 ºC, 0.7 g of steam is condensed on it. Calculate the specific heat of the metal. Given
Latent heat of steam = 540 cal g -1.
Question 8: (3)
1 kg of ice at 0 ºC is being continuously heated through an electric heater of 1 kW. Assuming
that all the heat is transmitted to ice, calculate the time interval in second for:

a. ice to completely melt to water at 0 ºC,

b. water to get heated from 0 º C to 100 ºC, (iii) water at 100 ºC to convert into steam.
[Given: Specific latent heat of ice = 3,36,000 J kg-1, Specific heat capacity of water =
4,200 J kg-1 K-1, Specific latent heat of steam = 22,60,000 J kg-1 .

Question 9: (3)
A metal of mass 250 g is heated to a temperature of 65 ºC. It is then placed in 50 g of water
at 20 ºC. The final steady temperature of water becomes 25 ºC. Neglecting the heat taken by
the container, calculate the specific heat capacity of the metal.

Question 10: (5)

Give reasons:

a. Heat supplied to a substance during its change of state not cause any rise in its
temperature?
b. Burns caused by steam more severe than those caused by boiling water at the same
temperature?
c. In winter, the weather forecast for a certain day was ‘severe frost’. A wise farmer
watered his fields the night before to prevent frost damage to his crops.
d. Steam pipes warm a building more effectively than hot water pipes in cold countries.
e. One feels ice cream at 0 ºC colder than water at 0 ºC.
