Task 1

1. Sociolinguistics studies the sociological aspects of language, including how social factors influence linguistic variation and change. 2. While Chomsky views linguistics as the study of cognitive psychology, sociolinguistics examines the relationship between language and its social/cultural contexts. 3. 1. What does sociolinguistic study? Sociolinguistics, the study of the sociological aspects of language.

2. How did Chomsky describe linguistics and did he show interest in the relationship between
language and its social and cultural matrix? Chomsky has described linguistics as a branch of
cognitive psychology, and neither he nor most of his followers have yet shown much interest in the
relationship between language and its social and cultural matrix.
3. What is used to identify the status of the speaker? Social dialects, which exhibit a number of
socially significant language forms, serve to identify the status of speakers; this is especially evident
in England, where social dialects transcend regional dialect boundaries.
4. What terms are used by linguists to denote socially important dimensions of phonological,
grammatical and lexical variations within a language? Terms such as style and register (as well as a
variety of others) are employed by many linguists to refer to the socially relevant dimensions of
phonological, grammatical, and lexical variation within one language.
5. What language in the world is most often chosen for study? English is the first choice of foreign
language in most other countries of the world, and it is that status that has given it the position of a
global lingua franca. It is estimated that about a third of the world’s population, some two billion
persons, now use English.
6. How widespread is English in the world? Are there any doubts about its ambiguity? If English is
your mother tongue, you may have mixed feelings about the way English is spreading around the
world. You may feel pride, that your language is the one which has been so successful; but your
pride may be tinged with concern, when you realize that people in other countries may not want to
use the language in the same way that you do, and are changing it to suit themselves. English is also
common and even official in many countries.
7. When does the language reach global status? A language achieves a genuinely global status when it
develops a special role that is recognized in every country. This might seem like stating the obvious,
but it is not, for the notion of ‘special role’ has many facets. Such a role will be most evident in
countries where large numbers of people speak the language as a mother tongue.
8. What is the peculiarity of the lingua franca? A lingua franca is any language used for
communication between people who do not share a native language. It can be a mixed language
such as a pidgin or creole used for communication between language groups.
9. What is the English language? The English language is an Indo-European language in the West
Germanic language group. Modern English is widely considered to be the lingua franca of the world
and is the standard language in a wide variety of fields, including computer coding, international
business, and higher education.
10. How much has the English language changed in recent years? Words formerly distinguished as
nouns or verbs by differences in their forms are now often used as both nouns and verbs; In English
it is now possible to employ a plural noun as adjunct (modifier); Words from more than 350
languages have entered English in this way.
