Discovering the Difference

What is a Genuine part? This can be

answered in-part by looking at what a
Genuine part is NOT:
• a “rebranded” part
• an “alternative” part
• a “recycled” part
• a “new part sourced from alternatives to
the OEMs”

Genuine parts are not just “better” parts.

They are the physical manifestations of a
specialized quality system built with our
customers’ needs in mind. This system
integrates Genuine parts design and testing,
certified technicians, and a comprehensive Engineered for Dependability
warranty that provides peace of mind for our
customers.

When warranty work is needed, Cummins

uses only Genuine parts—at our expense.
The alternative, using non-genuine parts,
introduces something foreign into our
Genuine system, and this inconsistency
makes reliability a concern, and puts the
warranty at risk.

Our quality is not just built into every

product we manufacture. It is the focus
of our systems: designed to provide the
most dependable products and the most
dependable service. Every Time.

5
Fair and Honest Competition

At Cummins, we are committed to

Competing Fairly and Honestly. In
fact, this is one of our official Statements
of Ethical Principles that each Cummins
employee is expected to embrace and
adhere to.

One manifestation of our commitment to fair

and honest competition is that we do not
disparage our competitors or their products.
Rather than criticize others, we talk truthfully
about the advantages of Cummins.

Customers want to know how Cummins

is unique in the marketplace. We illustrate
this by explaining what we can provide. We
do not need to explain what an individual
competitor cannot provide for them.

6
What Makes Cummins Unique?

Our Vision: Making people’s lives better

by unleashing the Power of Cummins.

Cummins is many things. We are a major

provider of outstanding products and
superior services that people all over the
world need for business and leisure. We are
hard workers who strive to perform - every
day, every where, every way. Most of all, we
are a group of people who share a belief that
our collective energy, ability and creativity are
more effective than our individual efforts in
achieving our goals. In these respects, we
are second to none.

The element that unites excellent products

and services, high performance, and
teamwork is our common Vision. This Vision
motivates and inspires us; it aligns, focuses
and defines our resources.

7
Processes

At Cummins, we know it is our

responsibility to ensure continuous
improvement towards defect free
processes that satisfy customer needs
and achieve business results. Consistent
quality is achieved through the use of
standardized processes.

Cummins specialized processes set

us apart from our competitors and
continuously lead us toward improvements
in parts manufacturing. Formal analysis
shows that Cummins parts consistently
rank ahead of the competition in vital
statistics regarding tensile strength,
porosity, hardness and more.

At Cummins, we invest heavily in the

research and development of our
products, and incorporate improvements
from continuous engineering into our
aftermarket parts.

8
Comparisons

A recent study of some Cummins Mid- Figure 1

Range engine critical parts compared to
competitor’s parts, confirmed the Cummins
Genuine advantage. Comparisons
were based on visual inspection, critical
measurements, materials analysis and
chemistry.

The following examples illustrate some of

the advantages of staying in the Genuine
Cummins Piston
channel for parts purchases. An engine
owner can only be assured of getting
Genuine Cummins parts when they
purchase from a certified Cummins location.

Pistons

Cummins places its oil drain slots so they

are not located close to the pin axis which Competitor Piston
can weaken the piston (See Figure 1).

If competitive pistons do not meet Cummins

specifications for combustion bowl volume,
radius and the distance between the top
ring groove and the top of the piston, the
following may result (See Figure 2):

• Poor fuel economy

• Black or white smoke
• Starting issues
• Weak piston
9
• Low durability
Figure 2

Radius

Genuine Cummins

Proper ring groove width is important. If top

ring groove and 2nd ring groove are too Radius Radius
tight, it can lead to high oil consumption,
blow by, and loss of power (See Figure 3).

and more durable, which can be attributed An incorrect radius leads to stress risers which make

to its chemical make up. Tensile strength is
17% better. The competitors’ pistons showed more
internal and sub-surface porosity, which
weakens the piston and leads to less
Figure 3 durability.

Cummins piston was the only piston with

proper pin bore profiles. Lack of proper pin
bore profile leads to a weaker piston and
can lead to power cylinder failure.

Piston Summary
Using only genuine Cummins Pistons helps
an engine owner avoid:
Cummins Piston
• Poor durability
• Black/white smoke
• Blowby
• Poor fuel economy
• High oil consumption
• Loss of power
• Power cylinder failure
• Catastrophic failure

Top Rings

Cummins top rings have deep circle markings

which help ensure proper installation. Only the
Cummins ring appears to have undergone the
special lapping process which helps to avoid
high oil consumption and blow-by.

Oil Rings

• Avoidance of oil ring widths that are too

large and have large variances, helps to
circumvent high oil consumption, friction,
and scuffing.

• High variance in the depth of the grooves

between lands around the ring can lead to

• Top lands that are too flat result in a ring

that is more susceptible to breakage and
chipping during installation.

• Incorrect placement of the tensioner can

lead to high oil consumption. Improper
ring tension (too high) leads to higher

friction and wear, and reduces fuel placement of tensioner
economy.

Using Cummins rings will benefit your
customers by helping avoid:
Competitor B improper
• High oil consumption
placement of tensioner
• Blowby
• Scuffing
• Poor fuel economy
• Ring Breakage/Chipping
• Accelerated wear
Trust Cummins genuine parts for consistent
quality.
12
Thrust Bearings

Cummins no longer uses bronze alloy. This

avoids higher corrosion and wear.

Longer flanges on Cummins thrust bearings

provide more area to support thrust load.

Using Cummins 3-piece thrust bearing

Genuine Cummins: No bronze alloy for
assembly provides better conformability, higher corrosion resistance and less wear
better geometry with load-bearing surfaces,
and acceptance of higher thrust loads.

Cummins does not use lead in thrust

bearings. This helps avoid tin and lead
migration and results in a stronger thrust
bearing.

Competitor A uses bronze alloy that poten-

tially has higher corrosion and more wear

13
Main Bearing

Cummins bearing material microstructure

provides a higher fatigue strength which
leads to a more durable bearing.

The Cummins bearings were typically 20%

harder than competitors products we tested,
making Cummins more durable. Genuine Cummins

The Cummins load bearing layer

specification and quality of manufacture
produces a bearing with higher fatigue
strength and greater durability.

Using Cummins bearings will benefit your
customers by helping avoid:
• Bearing damage
• Corrosion
• Accelerated wear Competitor B
• Low fatigue strength
• Low durability
• Low engine performance

Summary

Genuine parts are the result of a specialized

quality system that integrates Genuine parts
design and testing, certified technicians,
and a comprehensive warranty that provides
peace of mind for our customers.
Quality is the focus of our systems: designed
to provide the most dependable products and
