Analog Electronics Lab 4

This lab report summarizes experiments done on analog electronics circuits to examine slew rate, gain bandwidth product, and voltage/current offsets. Slew rate limits were observed to distort sinusoidal waves into non-ideal square waves. Gain bandwidth was calculated for an LM741 op-amp at different resistor values, showing the relationship between gain, bandwidth, and their product. Voltage and current offsets were also examined. The lab helped increase understanding of these circuit parameters.

SLEW RATE, GAIN BANDWIDTH PRODUCT, V-OFFSET
AND I-OFFSET

SLEW RATE:
Slew rate is defined as the change of voltage or current, or any other electrical quantity, per unit
of time.
Electronic circuits may specify minimum or maximum limits on the slew rates for their inputs or
outputs, with these limits only valid under some set of given conditions (e.g. output loading). When
given for the output of a circuit, such as an amplifier, the slew rate specification guarantees that
the speed of the output signal transition will be at least the given minimum, or at most the given
maximum. When applied to the input of a circuit, it instead indicates that the external driving
circuitry needs to meet those limits in order to guarantee the correct operation of the receiving
device. If these limits are violated, some error might occur and correct operation is no longer
guaranteed. For example, when the input to a digital circuit is driven too slowly, the digital input
value registered by the circuit may oscillate between 0 and 1 during the signal transition.

Gain Bandwidth Product:

The gain–bandwidth product (GBP) for an amplifier is the product of the amplifier's bandwidth
and the gain at which the bandwidth is measured.
The gain-bandwidth product is gain of an op amp after the half-power point, where the gain of the
op amp drops at a constant rate equal to the product of the gain x frequency.
You can calculate the gain-bandwidth product by the formula:
Gain-bandwidth Product= Gain x Frequency

Objective:
 The upper frequency limit of a typical amplifier will be examined. The investigation will
include the effect of voltage gain on cut-off frequency.
 The effects of slew rate on pulse and sinusoidal waveforms will be examined.
 The effects of Voltage offset and current offset will be examined.

Tabulation and Calculation:
Slew rate and GBP For LM741
Resistor Av Fc GBP
10k -10 20k 200k
100k -100 2.62k 262k
1k -1 51.7k 51.7k

Slew rate =2πfV

F=1kz
V=3v

Conclusion:
We successfully observed change in the circuit as slew rate for LM741 is nearly 0.5 V/us. So
when sine wave was applied it took some time to get square wave form it wasn’t pure square
wave. Wave took some time. We took readings, observed gain varying resistance and calculated
the gain band pass. This lab increased our knowledge on the subject.
