Assignment 1 Mass Transfer

This document contains instructions for a group assignment on mass transfer. It includes two questions. Question 1 asks students to use the Chapman-Enskog method to predict the diffusivity of helium diffusing into nitrogen, and then calculate diffusion rates. Question 2 asks students to determine diffusion coefficients of methylamine in water and water in methylamine using experimental data and the Wilke-Chang equation, and predict a concentration gradient given a flux. Students are instructed to submit the assignment on a specified date during class, and late submissions will not be evaluated.

BKF 2432 MASS TRANSFER

Group Assignment 1

Please submit the assignment on ______________ during the class. Late submission will not be
evaluated. 4 person in one group.

QUESTION 1 [30 MARKS]

Helium gas (A) and Nitrogen gas (B) are diffusing in counter diffusion through a straight glass
tube of 2 ft long with an inside diameter of 0.08 ft at 29 °C and 101.32 kPa. Both ends of tube
are connected to large mixed chamber and the pressure is kept constant at 20 kPa and 6.666 kPa
in the other chamber.

a) Predict the diffusivity of He diffusing into N2 using Chapman-Enskog method.

(13 Marks)
b) Based on the diffusivity obtained in (a), calculate the diffusion rate of He in
i. kg mol/mm2.s
ii. kg mol/s
(9 Marks)
c) Calculate the diffusion rate of N2 in kg/m2.hr for the mixed chamber operated from 1.00
pm until 2.30 pm.
(8 Marks)

QUESTION 2 [30 MARKS]

Methylamine is an organic compound with a formula of CH₃NH₂. This colourless liquid is a

derivative of ammonia but with one hydrogen atom being replaced by a methyl group. Several
studies reported increase exposure of this compound imposed high risk for esophageal and
gastric cancer in Kashmir, Northern India. It was concluded that regular consumption in drinking
water, vegetable and salted tea were responsible for their high exposure to methylamine.
Therefore, the diffusion of methylamine in human dietary is very harmful. The details of the
methylamine chemical structure and the viscosity at various temperature are shown in Figure 1
and Table 1 respectively.

Figure 1: Chemical structure of methylamine

Table 1: Viscosity of methylamine at various temperature

T (°C)  (cp)
29.3 0.173
24.8 0.179
18.5 0.190
12.5 0.202
9.9 0.206

a) Determine the diffusion coefficient, 𝐷𝐴𝐵 of methylamine (m2/s) in water at 298 K.

(13 Marks)

b) Determine the diffusion coefficient, 𝐷BA of water in methylamine (m2/s) at 298 K using
Wilke Chang Equation. Please state either any different on the diffusion coefficient values
obtained in (a) and (b)? Justify your answer.
(9 Marks)

c) If the temperature is increased by 5% from the actual temperature operation condition at

(a), estimate the new DAB value of methylamine in water using temperature corrected
factor from Wilke Chang Equation.
(4 Marks)
d) Predict the concentration gradient for a steady state equimolar counter of diffusion for
methylamine in water at 298 K if the distance is 2 m and NA flux of methylamine is 4.50
x 10-8 kg mol/s.m2.
