Compute Your BMI To Get Your Body Classification Based On The Scale Above

This document contains information about calculating body mass index (BMI) and target heart rate (THR). It provides the formulas and steps to determine BMI based on weight and height, which can indicate if a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. It also outlines the aerobic exercise guidelines of frequency, intensity, time, and type. The document gives the formulas and instructions for calculating maximum heart rate and target heart rate range based on age and resting heart rate. The sample calculations determine a BMI of 18.61 (normal) and a target heart rate range of 151 to 181 bpm for the individual.

Aerobic Exercise Guidelines (F.I.T.T. Principle)

1. Frequency (how often?)—at least 3 days per week
2. Intensity (how hard?)—in your personal target heart rate range
3. Time (how long?)—at least 20 minutes
4. Type (what?)—jogging, swimming, bicycling

Here is how to calculate your target heart rate (THR) range…

1) First of all, you need the following data:

a. Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) - (220 – your age = MHR)

My MHR = 200 bpm

For example, if you are 17 years old, your MHR is 203 beats per minute, or 220–
17=203.
b. Resting Heart Rate (RHR)- (count pulse at rest for 1 minute)
Locate your pulse and count your heart beats.
My RHR = 78 bpm

2) Enter the above data in the following two formulas and solve. The formulas represent the lower
(60%) and upper (85%) limits of your target heart rate range.

(60%)— 200 bpm – 78 bpm = 122 bpm x .6 = 73.2 bpm + 78 bpm = 151 bpm
MHR RHR RHR LOWER LIMIT
(85%)— 200 bpm – 78 bpm = 122 bpm x .85 = 103.7 bpm + 78 bpm = 181 bpm
MHR RHR RHR UPPER LIMIT

3) Enter your target heart rate:

My target heart rate is: 151 bpm to 181 bpm
lower limit upper limit

Please fill-in the boxes below with the needed information to have a full grasp of
the data that will serve as your bases for you exercise program plan in the following
modules.

II. Reflection
On this part, you are to make your reflections based on the guide questions provided.
Make your statement concise and direct to the point.

Reflection:

• Why assess one’s health status before participating any physical activities?
A person’s health status determines how well a person can handle
physical activities. To avoid any form of injury, an assessment should be done. If
the assessment shows that the person’s health status is not too well, it is best
that he/she does not engage in physical activities so as to avoid injuries.

• Why you need to know your BMI and body classification?

BMI is an estimate of a person’s body fat and a good gauge of one’s risk
for diseases that can occur with more body fat. It can also be used to determine if you’re
weight and height complement each other. Knowing you BMI and body classification will
allow you to adjust your lifestyle to what is best for you. This will minimize risks of
getting various diseases that are caused either by being too overweight or too
underweight.

• What will happen to your resting heart rate as your heart gets stronger?
If your heart gets stronger, it gets better at pumping out more blood per
heartbeat. This way, your resting heart rate is lowered. It is because the heart
can sufficiently pump blood even with fewer beats due to how strong and healthy
it is.
