Time is the one thread that runs through all our lives. Whether you are always early for an
event, arrive on schedule, or prefer to be fashionably late, you are most likely to be watching
the clock. If you would like more time in your day to squeeze in more activities, simply start
using these strategies and take the control you want.

Learning time management techniques is the first step to help you plan your day so that you
know exactly what must be accomplished. However, it is much easier to get motivated in the
morning if you know you are only going to concentrate on what you can control. If you try to
do everything other people expect you could end up spending all day walking around in your
pyjamas trying to decide what to do first. Quite simply, you cannot control what other people
want.

Over the next few days, we will share four short videos with you on how to control your
environment, energy, time and accountability. Learning to implement this will allow you to
use your time management skills to suit you. Remember, one size does not fit all!

We live in a world where clutter is all around us and quick entertainment is at our fingertips.
We can switch on the television, pick up our mobile phones, or log on to the computer and
get lost in social media. All these fun alternatives can ultimately prevent us from completing
the tasks at hand and then get us nowhere fast.

So, how can you get more hours out of your day and how will you spend that extra time?

Denial will not cause your work to go away, it only makes your life more stressful, so let’s
start working on these 7 strategies right now to help you to stop procrastinating and to start
taking some action.

We all know that by managing your time

effectively, you will be more satisfied and
productive.

So, let us get started!

1 Get enough sleep so you can start your day on time
Waking up on time and starting your day without rushing will leave you refreshed
and less stressed. If you keep this up on your days off as well, you get extra
bonus hours to do what you want.

2 Prioritise & work in the best way to suit you

You could get the hardest jobs out of the way first. You have more energy in the
morning, and you will feel more accomplished and less stressed when those big
jobs are out of the way. Or you could do all the little jobs first as you can build
momentum and experience those little bursts of joy as you cross those jobs off
your list.
There is no right or wrong way, whichever way motivates you is the best way, as
long as you prioritise.

3 Set and focus on deadlines

If you are one of the many people who stresses out when a deadline is looming,
build in some extra time so that you can finish the job well and ahead of time. Do
this by working on just one task at a time.
For years, people have been going on about multi-tasking, heaping praise on
those that can accomplish 10 things at once. What has been discovered more
recently is that multi-tasking often diminishes the quality of the job, even if it is
finished before a deadline.
What sounds more productive: writing a report in 1 hour or spending 3 hours
writing a report while answering calls and emails?
By focusing on one thing, you can get things done and off your list.

4 Set reasonable goals and learn to say, “No”

Which is more likely to get you motivated, clearing out a room or clearing out a
corner of the room?
By breaking down jobs to smaller manageable tasks you can take control of your
life. And when you say no, you can free up your time when asked to take on
additional responsibility, managing your tasks and goals will give you those extra
hours to do what you want.

5 Reward yourself for a job well done
There will always be certain jobs or tasks that we despise doing, no matter how
positive our mindset is. When faced with this scenario, make sure you plan to do
something fun after you complete each of those despised jobs.
Science has proven the hormones generated by rewarding yourself can increase
your happiness in all aspects of your life!

6 Understand your operating system

Everyone is an individual and we all approach things in different ways. Some of
us are happy to jump straight into a project and work it out as you go along,
where others need to plan the steps from the beginning to the end.
We all work in different ways, some are musicians, some scientists, some actors
and some are astronauts. Yes, there is a lot in between but knowing how you
operate will give you so much clarity in your life it will result in amazing
achievements.

7 Understand your timing

In adulthood, the amount of time we can concentrate and be productive reduces
as we get older. Trying to work hour after hour leads to poor quality work and
ultimately results in you having to repeat the exercise.
Have you ever read the same page of a book more than once when you are
tired?
Start by limiting your work time to 50-minute slots and then take a break. During
the 5-10-minute break do something to change your focus and ideally, spend
some energy. Walk up and down the stairs, if you make a hot drink do squats
while the kettle is boiling, put your favourite upbeat song on and sing and dance
along or simply get outside for some fresh air.

If you take away anything from this guide, start doing this and see how
more productive you are in a week’s time!
