Problem Sheet # 4 (Turbojet)

This document contains 5 problems related to analyzing turbojet engines. Problem 1 asks to calculate the thrust and thrust specific fuel consumption of a turbojet engine flying at Mach 1.5 given engine parameters like compressor pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature, and specific fuel consumption. Problem 2 asks to calculate the thrust of an engine given parameters like air mass flow rate, fuel flow rate, and component efficiencies. Problem 3 asks to calculate the thrust of an engine flying at Mach 0.8 given mass flow rate, fuel-air ratio, component efficiencies and pressure ratios. PROBLEMS ON TURBOJET
Problem # 1

An ideal turbojet engine without afterburner is flying with Mach 1.5 at an altitude
where Ta = 400oR, Pa = 3.79 Psia. Following is the relevant engine data:-
m a = 96.6 lbm/sec.
rc = 9.0 (Compressor pressure ratio)
To4 = 2000oR (Turbine inlet temperature)
QR = 18600 BTU/ lbm
Cp = 0.24 BTU/ lbm R
γ = 1.4
R = 53.3 ft- lbf / lbm R
A con-di nozzle with complete expansion is installed on the engine.

Find Thrust and TSFC of the engine. (Ans. 4851.4 lbf, 1.347 lbm /hr. lbf)

Problem # 2

An aircraft powered by a turbojet engine is flying with a speed of 800 ft/sec under sea
level conditions. What will be the thrust of the engine for the following given conditions?
Air mass flow rate = 96.6 lbm /sec
Fuel flow rate = 1.5 lbm /sec
Turbine inlet temperature = 2400 R
Turbine expansion ratio = 3
Compressor pressure ratio = 8
Stagnation pressure at the compressor inlet = 20 Psia
Pressure loss across combustion chamber = 5 Psia
Turbine efficiency = 90%
The nozzle is convergent with 85% efficiency.
(Ans. 4994.5 lbf)
Problem # 3

An aircraft incorporated with turbojet engine is flying at Mach 0.8 at sea level. The
mass flow rate is 100 lbm /sec. The fuel air ratio is 0.01. The diffuser efficiency is 85%.
Burner pressure loss is 3% of the compressor outlet pressure. Turbine efficiency is 90% and
nozzle is convergent with 85% efficiency. The compressor pressure ratio is 8. When
compressor ratio reaches 4 with 90% isentropic efficiency, 5% of air is bled out for air
conditioning. After the bleed point the efficiency of compressor is 89%. The fuel has QR of
19000 BTU/ lbm. Calculate the thrust of the engine. (Ans 2854 lbf)

Problem # 4

A turbojet aircraft is flying at 40000 ft with Mach 0.85. The component efficiencies are 0.8
for diffuser, 0.74 for compressor, 0.92 for burner, 0.9 for turbine, and 0.96 for nozzle. The
nozzle is fully expanded. Combustion pressure ratio is 0.95. Fuel (C8H18) at 77 F is burnt
with 400% theoretical air, in the combustion chamber. Air mass flow is 130 lbm /sec.
Compressor pressure ratio is 7. Assuming constant specific heats, calculate thrust and thrust
horsepower of the engine. (Ans 4014.5 lbf, 6026.8 HP)

Problem # 5

Shown below is T-s diagram of a turbojet engine.

(a) Find Toa and To1.

(b) Find Po2 for 90% diffuser efficiency
(c) Find out To3 for m a = 2 Slug/sec when compressor is 80% efficient and requires 6600
HP during a test run.
(d) Find To7 and Po7.
(e) If Poa = 4.14 Psia, find the Mach number at which above test was conducted.
(Assume Pa = 2.72 Psia).
(f) Calculate thrust of the engine for a convergent nozzle. Neglect the fuel flow rate and
assume γ =1.4 and Cp = 6012 ft-lbf/slugoR throughout.
