ACTIVITY 1
QUESTIONS TO PONDER
Directions: Read the questions and instruction carefully.

1. Given the traditional/conventional concept of literacy, how literate are you?

I believe that I am functionally literate for I can understand what I read and I can
apply it to real life situations.
2. How deep is your level of comprehension?
I can say that in the level where I can make sense of the meaning of what I read,
and evaluate it in a manner that I will get deeper understanding.
3. As a pre-service teacher, what kind of written materials should you be able to read and
understand? Are you reading these materials? How well can you understand them?
As a pre-service teacher, I can read and understand manuscripts, biographies,
charts, curriculum, letters, etc., and from reading these materials, I can draw an
inference and comprehend its contents and apply it to practice.
4. Which of the new literacies are you knowledgeable in? Which of the new literacies do
you lack knowledge in?
I think I can claim that I’m knowledgeable in Globalization and Multicultural
Literacies due to my exposure to the internet I can locate, verify, and ultimately
manage online information communicate it with others and use it to address real-
world problems.
On the other hand, I think that I lack knowledge in Ecoliteracy and Artistic and
Creative Literacy, and I hope to improve in this category.

5. Although reading education in the Philippines aims to develop Functional/Practical

literacy in learners, what level of literacy is being developed when classroom practices
focus more on memorization rather than on understanding and applicant?
Rote learning or simply practicing memorization in a classroom falls only in
Basic Literacy because they can memorize certain concepts without actually
understanding its meaning or its essence.

ACTIVITY 2

EVALUATE
1. Compare and contrast the traditional concept of literacy to the modern
view of literacy.
In the traditional concept of literacy, practical application of
knowledge that shows comprehension and understanding is its peak,
while in the modern view, although practical application of
knowledge is also part of its characterization, it expands due to the
ever-increasing improvement in technology and globalization,
wherein literacy in the contemporary world is identified by being
knowledgeable in using technology and adapting to the new age of
information, media, and, culture.

2. Describe the changes in the 21st century that have led to the rise of new
literacies.
As the new age of technological advancement arises, the
changes in the way of communication and the emergence of different
technologies like computer, high-tech phones, social media,
networking and transportation led to the rise of new literacies.

3. With a partner (choose your partner) brainstorm and answer the question:
What teaching strategies and forms of assessment could you use to help
develop functional literacy?
Functional literacy is more on applied knowledge. A
Participatory Approach and a Cooperative Learning Strategy may be
used to develop functional literacy. The themes derive from real
issues that affect students’ daily lives where a particular literacy is
used as a vehicle to solve social problems.
Students’ functional literacy can be assessed through a
Performance-based Assessment.

4. Lesson Planning and Lesson Demonstration: Prepare and deliver a lesson

that incorporates some of the new literacies.
