Hooking the Reader: Making your writing a page turner!

Hooking a reader when you are writing an essay is just as important as a movie trailer is to
the success of the movie. You want to give “a little bit” of the content, but you really want them to
“buy the ticket.” This presentation will introduce you to some types of introductions so that you can
use them as your own when you write.

REMEMBER THE RULE OF 3!

 Your introduction should have at least 3 concise and clear sentences.
You should accomplish 3 things with your introduction:

 Get the reader’s attention

 Present your topic and purpose
 Connect with your audience

So, would you like to know how to get it?

Graduate from High School!

• Studies show that people who graduate from high school will earn at least P500, 000
more in their lifetime than people who do not.
• Staying in school will determine whether or not you get the P500, 000.

Well, did I get your attention?

This is an example of one way to hook your reader in the introduction: asking a
question.

You can ask a rhetorical question that draws the reader into wanting to read further to
discover the answer to the question.

Ask an interesting question that you will answer in your essay.

Use Questions to “Hook” Your Reader!

Let’s Take a Closer. Look at Some Examples

Have you ever wondered how you would survive if you found yourself alone in
the jungle? How would you defend yourself against predators? What would you eat?
Where would you find water? Read Swiss Family Robinson to see just how a family
manages to survive!

Sample Questions to AVOID!

AVOID meaningless questions that don’t ask the reader to think critically; a
question you don’t expect the reader to answer.

Examples of Meaningless Questions

• “Do you like Christmas? I do.”

• “Do you have a favorite season? Well I do.”

 • “Have you ever wondered why people have different traditions? Well, I’ll
tell you.”

Another technique that writers use to engage the writer is to share a personal experience in the
introduction.

Let’s look at Some Examples

“10, 9, 8, 7, 6…” It was my first basketball game and I had the ball with the clock ticking away. I
was standing on top of the world. However, to get to that point, I had to go through pre-game jitters, the
embarrassing shot, and the opponent’s hard stares. Yes, it takes determination to succeed.

Two Effective Techniques:

- Questions
- Narrate a personal experience

OPEN WITH A QUOTATION

• Open with a quotation that is well-known (but be sure to put quotation marks around it).
• You can also use a quotation from someone that is not famous. It could be from a song, movie,
or one of your own.

Examples of Famous Quotes

• “A penny saved is a penny earned.” –Benjamin Franklin

• “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas.” – Bing Crosby

Student Example:

John F. Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for
your country." I think today's Americans have forgotten Kennedy's message. We expect our country to
take care of us, but we are not taking care of our country.

Use of Figurative Language or Descriptive words to hook the readers

“Time flies when you are having fun!”

Begin with a simile – a comparison using “like” or “as”

Begin with a metaphor – a comparison stating one thing is another thing

Begin with personification - give nonliving objects human characteristics

Make a Bold Statement

The introductions in this section will deal with speaking your mind, making a bold statement to
emphasize your position.

 A bold and challenging statement is similar to an announcement, but is meant to cause some
people to disagree with what you say. It's like one side of an argument. It can be an opinion, but don't
immediately state that it is your opinion.

Making a bold or strong statement can get the reader’s attention.

Making a bold statement also sets the tone for your essay and establishes you as someone who
has clear and concise thoughts.

Open with a Definition

Open with a definition of the term you are discussing and writing about. It can be your own or
come from a dictionary, textbook, or other source.

Example: According to Webster's Dictionary, government is defined as the authority that serves
the people and acts on their behalf. How can the government know what the people want if the people do
not vote? If we do not vote, the government may act on its own behalf instead of on the behalf of the
people.

Give Your Opinion

Come on, you guys do this all the time, right? So, instead of dancing around the topic, tell the
reader what you think about it in the introduction.

Example

“There is no question, students should be allowed to choose where they sit at lunch.”

As you can see, “hooking the reader” is like the key to success in writing!

BUT…. Don’t forget the following tips

Do NOT use the following phrases:

“In this essay…”

“I am going to tell you about…”

“I will write about…”

“The first reason is…”

“The second reason is…”

Writing Effective Conclusions/Ending

BACK TO THE FUTURE!

 Writers must look to the future….and know where to find BOTH the front and the back
of the train!

Four Ways to Conclude

1. Touch back

The “Touch back” conclusion

• Physical representation: Reach your hand over your shoulder, pat your back.

DEFINITION:
Touching back to the main idea of the essay as stated in the thesis paragraph.

2. Look to the future

Physical Representation: Hold your hand up to your forehead to demonstrate the

importance of looking to the future.

3. Go to the heart

Go to the Heart of the Matter Conclusion

• Physical representation: hit your heart with your fist to signify the importance of going to
the heart of the matter.
• Think: WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT ALL MAKE? WHY SHOULD THE READER
CARE?

4. End with a zinger!

Physical Representation: Pull back your arm like you are about to let go of a sling shot.
This is the “zinger” or final statement that leaves the reader thinking, “WOW!”

Think: how can I surprise my reader?

Tips on Writing Conclusions/Ending

• Last movie lines provide great ideas of how to end without leaving the audience hanging.
– “Do I still have to sleep in the cupboard?” Chip, Beauty and the Beast
– “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” Dr. Emmett Brown,
– Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: ‘With great
power comes great responsibility.’ This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I’m spider-
man.” Peter Parker, Spiderman
• Synthesize, don't summarize
– Include a brief summary of the paper's main points, but don't simply repeat things
that were in your paper. Instead, show your reader how the points you made and the
support and examples you used fit together. Pull it all together.

 One of the first things a reader remembers after having read a piece of writing is the last words
the writer uses. Effective conclusions are particularly important in persuasive essays since they are the
last chance the writer has to convince the reader. The following is a collection of suggestions for writing
effective conclusions.

1. Use a summary statement rather than phrases like the following: "In summary...," "To
conclude...," "To summarize...," or "In closing...." These are too obvious and vague to be
effective. Use a transitional phrase which summarizes a point in your essay instead. A sample
summary statement is as follows: "As we have seen, poverty is a known contributor to crime;
therefore, it should not be discounted when considering ways to prevent crime.
2. Use a quotation, such as "As a man thinks, so is he," when your paper has just explained how
negative thinking has created problems for someone.
3. Refer to the story or character used in the introduction, such as "So don't be like Sally, be
informed."
4. 4. Use a cleverly crafted generalization, such as "Poverty is not a great issue, if everyone is
poor."
5. Express your hopes as you look to the future. "We can only hope that people in our society will
become less self-centered, and become more involved in helping others." Or "We have some
poverty programs, which are of great value, but in ten years the problem will still remain, unless
we change our attitudes.
