Revision Test - I: March 2020 Reg. No.

This document is a revision test paper for a 6th semester civil engineering student. It contains 3 parts testing knowledge of designing steel structures. Part A has 10 short answer questions. Part B has 5 long answer questions requiring calculations to design steel beams, columns, and connections. Part C requires designing purlins for a roof truss. The test is 3 hours long and covers topics like column buckling, lacing, beam design, and plate girder design.

Revision Test -I March 2020 Reg. No.

Programme : B.E. Date : 06/03/2020

Branch : Civil Engineering Time : 09.15am to 12.15am
Semester : 06 Duration : 3Hrs
Subject code : CE 8601 Maximum : 100 Marks
Subject Name : Design of Steel Structures

PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1 State the purpose of column base.
2 Evaluate the effective length of column based on end conditions.
3 What are the different ways by which a compression member buckles?
4 What are the buckled modes for different end condition ?
5 Define single lacing and double lacing.
6 What is web buckling?
7 Define shape factor.
8 What do you mean by castellated beam?
9 What is a purlin?
10 Write the types of load combinations for the analysis of roof truss.

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11 a) Find the suitable design for a rolled steel beam section column to carry an (13)
axial load 1100KN. The column is 4m long and adequately in position but not
in direction at both ends.
(or)
b) A stanchion ISHB 300@ 618N/m in the lower storey of a building is to be (13)
jointed to a stanchion ISHB 200@ 392.4 N/m of the next upper story. A load
of 600 KN is to be transferred from the top storey stanchion. Design the
column splice. The column ends are made flush. Use steel of grade Fe 410
and bolts of grade 4.6.
12 a) Design a 8 m long built up laced column to carry a factored load of 1250 KN. (13)
The column is restrained in position but not in direction at each end. Provide
single lacing system making connections with 16 mm diameter bolts of grade
4.6. The column shall consists of two channels placed toe to toe at suitable
spacing
(or)
b) Design a gusseted base connection for a column ISHB 400 @ 822 N/m (13)
supporting an axial load of 500KN. The base plate is to rest on a concrete
pedestal of M20 grade concrete.
13 a) Write about batten plates in compression members. Give the design (13)
procedure for battened columns.
(or)
b) Determine the plastic section moduli about z-z and y-y axes and the plastic (13)
1
moment capacity of the channel section shown in figure below.assume fy= 250
MPa.

14 a) Explain design procedure of plate girders. Also explain the loads you would (13)
consider in the design.
(or)
b) Design a laterally unsupported beam simply supported over a span of 2 m. It (13)
carries a UDL of 56 kN/m.
15 a) Explain the various classification of cross section of flexural members. (13)
(or)
b) Design a rolled steel I section for a simply supported beam with a clear span (13)
of 6m .It carries a UDL of 50KN/m exclusive of self weight of the girder. The
beam is laterally unsupported.
PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)
16 a) Design the purlin for the following specifications.
Span of truss 12m
Spacing of truss 5m c/c
Spacing of purlins 1.5m c/c
Weight of GI sheets 200 N/m2
Wind pressure 2 kN/m2
Grade of steel Fe 410
Use I-section purlins.
