UNIT 2: VARIETIES AND REGISTERS OF SPOKEN

AND WRITTEN LANGUAGES; EVALUATING
MESSAGES AND IMAGES OF DIFFERENT TYPES
OF TEXTS REFLECTING DIFFERENT CULTURES

NAME : BAYOT, HAZELLE LOVE I.

COURSE, YEAR & SECTION : BSN-1C

DAY & TIME : WEDNESDAY 9-12 NN

PROFESSOR : GINA MENDOZA

NAME : BAYOT, HAZELLE LOVE I. UNIT 2 :

SCORE:

LESSON 1: VARIETIES AND REGISTERS OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGES

EXERCISE 1. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US ENGLISH AND UK ENGLISH. Use the space below to write
your reaction/reflection. As Filipino student, what is the impact of knowing the differences in your
communication style.

There’s a lot of difference between US English and UK English you can notice in their spelling,
vocabulary and grammar. For example, in the spelling of US English the word ‘encyclopedia’ spelled
like that but when it comes to UK English it spelled like ‘encyclopaedia’. And when it comes to the
vocabulary the American and British also have some words that differ from each other for example
trousers are used in British English but in American English it is called a pants, other example is in UK
English it is called university but in US English its college. Lastly, the grammar in American English,
collective nouns are considered singular (e.g. The band is playing). In contrast, collective nouns can
be either singular or plural in British English, although the plural form is most often used (e.g. The
band are playing). The British are also more likely to use formal speech, such as ‘shall’, whereas
Americans favour the more informal ‘will’ or ‘should’. Americans, however, continue to use ‘gotten’
as the past participle of ‘get’, which the British have long since dropped in favour of ‘got’.

The effect of learning the nuances in my communication style on me as an individual/Filipino student

is that everyone has a particular communication style, a manner in which they communicate and
share knowledge with others. It is critical to comprehend each speaking type and why people use
them. For example, the assertive communication style has been shown to be the most successful
because it combines the best characteristics of all the other forms. When we break down these four
types, we will have a greater understanding of the features of each type, common words, and what
distinguishes them.
