Preliminaries Fake News

This document outlines the methodology chapter of a thesis that examines students' ability to detect fake news. It describes the research design, population, instruments used, and data gathering procedures. The study aims to test students' discriminative ability to identify fake and authentic news, examine if this ability relates to demographics, and determine if an intervention impacts ability. A pre-test/post-test experimental design will be used on 300 students to measure these variables. The methodology provides details on how the study will be conducted to answer its stated research questions.

The Problem

Using social media is one of the most active web-based activities in Philippines in which

fake news are rampant as it quickly spreads through sharing links on social media by

individuals. With the advent of new platforms that provide quick access to information,

fake news stories and articles have proliferated—created by individuals or organizations

with the intent to mislead and manipulate the perception of the public, as well as to gain

politically and financially. The researchers study seeks (1) to test the participants

discriminative ability to identify fake news from authentic news; and (2) to test if there is

a significant relationship between the participants sociodemographic profile and their

discriminative ability to identify fake news from authentic news; and (3) to determine if

there’s a significant difference between pre-test and post-test on the participants

discriminative ability to detect fake news.

To make the research achievable, the researchers will conduct a true

experimental design on the 300 students currently enrolled in Metropolitan Medical

Center- College of Arts, Science & Technology.
