This document contains a final exam for a transportation engineering course. It consists of three parts: 1. Multiple choice questions identifying transportation-related terms like traffic signs, crosswalks, and capacity. 2. Problems calculating jam density and average speeds using data on vehicle flow rates and times. 3. A request to watch a video clip and provide a brief analysis and recommendation on the issue shown. The summary covers the key sections and content of the exam without providing direct answers to the questions. It focuses on the high-level structure and purpose of the document in 3 sentences.

Final Examination in CE 413T
(Transportation Engineering)
1st Semester, S.Y. 2019-2020
Name:Kamil Krishna E. Acaban
Course/Year:BSCE 4
Date:Jan. 03, 2020
TEST I. Read the statements carefully and identify what is described in every item.
Traffic Sign 1. A device mounted on a fixed support or portable support whereby a specific message is conveyed by means of words or
symbols placed or erected for the purpose of regulating, warning or guiding traffic.
Crosswalk 2. A line of vehicles or pedestrians waiting to proceed through an intersection.
Annual Average Daily Traffic 3. The average 24-hour traffic counts collected every day in the year.
Delay 4. The additional travel time experienced by a vehicle or pedestrian with reference to a base travel time.
Headway 5. The time elapsed between the front bumper of one vehicle and the front bumper of the following vehicle passing a given
point. Peak Hour Volume 6. The maximum number of vehicles that pass a point on a highway during a period of 60 consecutive minutes.
Road Delineator 7. Light retro-reflecting devices mounted at the side of the roadway, in series, to indicate the roadway alignment.
Intersection 8. Any level crossroad, junction, including open areas formed by such crossroad.
Warning Sign 9. Warn or advise of temporary hazardous conditions that could endanger road users or the men and equipment engaged on
roadwork.
Regulatory Sign 10. Signs that inform road users of traffic laws and regulations which, if disregarded, will constitute an offense.
Reaction Time 11. The time taken from the instant the object is visible to the driver to the instant the brakes are effectively applied.
Capacity 12. It is the maximum sustainable flow rate at which vehicles or persons reasonably can be expected to traverse a point or
uniform segment of a lane or roadwork during a specified time and control conditions; usually expressed as vehicles per hour, passenger cars per
hour or persons per hour.
Barriers 13. Highway appurtenances designed to prevent vehicular penetration from the travel way to areas behind it such as to minimize
damage to impacting vehicles and their occupants and reduce the risk of injuries to pedestrians and workers.
Traffic Density 14. The number of vehicles per unit distance along a road segment as measured at an instant time.
Guide/Information Sign 15. Signs that inform and advise road users of directions, distances, routes, the location of services for road users and points of
interest.
Traffic Engineering 16. A sub-discipline of transportation engineering that studies the safe and efficient movement of people and goods in roadways.
Rush Hour 17. The period that has the highest demand volume of traffic during the day.
Lane 18. One of the longitudinal strips from which the carriageway can be divided, whether or not defined by longitudinal road
markings.
Jam Density 19. Refers to the extreme traffic density when traffic flow stops completely.
Shockwaves 20. By-products of traffic congestion and queueing. Defined as transition zones between two traffic states that are dynamic.

TEST II. Read and answer the questions given below. Show your solution.
21-22. A highway has a capacity of 3000 vehicles per hour and average flow speed of 60 kph. Determine the jam density in vehicles per kilometer.
23-24. The following data were taken on five cars traversing a 2.4 km highway. Determine the space mean speed.
CAR TIME (minutes)
A 1.3
B 1.1
C 1.4
D 1.0
E 1.2

25-30. The results of a speed study is given in the form of a frequency distribution table. Complete the table below. Find the time mean speed and
space mean speed.
Speed Range (in Frequency
kph)
