Activity Sheet in Science (Ste) : Grade 10 1 Quarter/ Research Ii Week 1 Day1-5

The document provides guidance for students on revising their research proposals to follow the IMRAD format and ensure their research problems are well-formulated. It discusses the IMRAD format which structures research papers into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. The document also describes characteristics of well-formulated research problems, noting they should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Students are instructed to evaluate their proposed research problems against these criteria and revise as needed to develop good research problems that are the focus of their studies.

The IMRAD Format

I.OBJECTIVES

1. Familiarize with the IMRAD format in presenting a research paper

2. Revise the layout of the research proposal based on IMRAD format

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

The different parts of a scientific research paper in the IMRAD format are the
Introduction, Methodology and the Results and Discussion sections. This format is often
used in the presentation of various researches such as in social and natural sciences,
computer and engineering sciences.
The introduction part usually discusses what is the research all about. It often relates
the current state to the problems that the study intends to solve. Research hypotheses
are also stated in this section which are intended to be tested in the conduct of the
actual study or experimentation. Research methodology on the other hand, tells the
readers how the study was conducted. It includes discussion on the participants or
subjects of the study, sampling technique, research design, data gathering tools that are
employed in the study as well the statistical analysis in interpreting the data. The Results
and Discussion part of the research reveals the findings and outcomes of the study based
on the cited research problems. Conclusions are formulated on the basis of the research
findings which elaborate the implication of the research results. The research abstract, on
the other hand is the concise summary of the study. It includes discussion of the research
objectives, methods and results obtained in the study.
The IMRAD format plays relevance because its structure facilitates the literature
review and it allows the readers to navigate the articles easily locating the research
purpose, rationale and its significance.

Refining the Constructed Research Problem

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Evaluate if the formulated research problems are specific, measurable,

attainable, relevant, and time-bound
2. Apply guidelines in the formulation of good research problems

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

Research problem is the focus of the entire research process. Subsequent activities
is based on the problem being identified that is why it is the first challenge that every
researcher will be dealing with. Series of research questions will also help the researcher in
maintaining direction in the subsequent activities.

The construction of a research problem must be SMART, which means it must be

specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. A research problem is said to
be specific if it is able to present the research questions clearly relating how the
independent variable will be affecting the dependent variable. It is considered
measurable if the parameters can be quantified using certain instruments and tools. It is
equally essential that research problem must be achievable which implies that there are
possible means to attain the set objectives in a particular kind of research. Research
problem must also bear significance such that research findings would be able to benefit
man and the community. And at the same time, a research problem must be able to be
finished within a particular time-frame such that further improvements may still be
undertaken to better enhance the study.
The research problem is considered a good research problem if it is able to meet
the characteristics as discussed earlier. It is very important that the constructed problems
are good problems since they serve as the core of any research undertaking at which
methods and processes revolve around.
4
Further, the research problem must also be feasible, interesting and bear impact to
the community. Research problems are feasible if they can be possibly done using
specific tools and devices such that all the objectives set in a certain research study are
able to materialize. The problems must be interesting particularly on the part of the
researchers in a manner that these problems can be performed within the researchers’
capability and interest. In such a way, there is no way that the research aims would not
be met. It is of primary advantage if the expected solutions to the research problems are
beneficial to mankind and the community. Thus, research findings and results would bear
impact and good implications to the people and group for better quality of life.
The construction of the research problems therefore must have strong bases and
are supported by substantial literature review since they are the main reasons why
researches of various fields and kinds exist. In the absence of the research problems, no
research investigations can be possibly conducted. They are created and investigated to
provide mankind answers to their questions and solutions to their problems which would
eventually improve, add, innovate both products and processes to make them more vital
and satisfying.
