SITUATION 1

A simply supported beam has a span of 12m. The beam is used is a W33x240 A-242 steel with Fy = 345MPa.
Properties of W33x240
Wt. = 3.51 kN/m tw = 21.08 mm
A = 45548 mm2 Ix = 5660.75x106 mm4
d = 850.90 mm Iy = 388.34x106 mm4
bf = 402.97 mm Sx = 13322.68x103 mm3
tf = 35.56 mm Sy = 1933.67x103 mm3
Determine the maximum uniformly distributed load it can support if:
1. If the compression flange is braced laterally.
2. If the compression flange has lateral support only at its ends.
3. If the compression flange has lateral supports only at its ends and the mid span.

SITUATION 2
A W450x82 consisting of Fy = 311 MPa is used for a continuous span of 15.2m. It carries a uniform distributed load of 17.6 kN/m
and two concentrated loads of 90 kN acting at the midspan between the supports.

bf = 191.26 mm tf = 16 mm

4. Determine the maximum moment due to the actual loads. Neglect the weight of the beam.
5. Determine the allowable bending stress of the beam.
6. Actual bending stress if lateral supports is provided only at beam supports and midspans.

SITUATION 3
A cantilever beam has a span of 4m and carries a uniformly distributed load throught its span. (Use Fy = 248 MPa)

Properties of Section:
Sx = 2077x103 mm3 bf = 210mm
tw =9.90mm rt = 53.1mm
d = 533mm tf = 16mm
7. Find the maximum slenderness ratio to which we consider the beam long with respect to lateral buckling.
8. Determine the allowable bending stress.
9. Determine the maximum moment.

SITUATION 4. A built-up section is in the shape of an I-Beam. The section properties are as follows:
d = 500 mm tw = 16 mm
tf = 22 mm bf = 300 mm

10. Determine the elastic section modulus about the strong axis.
11. Compute the plastic section modulus about the strong axis.
12. Compute the shape factor of the beam along the strong axis of the beam.
13. If the section is of A36 steel, determine the plastic moment capacity of the beam in kN-m.

SITUATION 5. A T-section made up of two 300 mm x 20 mm steel members. If the yield stress of steel is 250 MPa,

15. Compute the plastic moment capacity of the section in kN-m.
SITUATION 6. The angular section has a thickness of 8 mm and both angle and column are A-36
steel. Bolt diameter is 22 mm A-325 high strength bolts in standard holes. Assume that the angle
and column are adequate. Diameter of hole is 3 mm greater than the bolt diameter.
Allowable shearing stress of bolts = 145 MPa.
16. Determine the maximum reaction of bolt “a”.
17. Determine the maximum reaction of the most stressed bolt.
18. Determine the ratio of the actual to the allowable shearing stress of the most stressed bolt.

SITUATION 7. A W 8 x 27 steel column 6 m long is connected at the top and the bottom and is part
of a frame subjected to joint translation (side sway). It carries an axial load of 800 kN and a counter
clockwise moment at the top and a clockwise moment at the bottom which is only 90% of the
moment at top.
Properties of W 8 x 27:
A = 0.013 m2 r = 194 mm SX = 0.00099 m3
FY = 248 MPa ES = 200000 MPa K = 1.0
19. Determine the total axial compressive stress if axial load existed in MPa?
20. Determine the allowable axial compressive stress in MPa.
21. If the allowable bending stress is 149 MPa, determine the value of the moment at the top
in kN-m?

SITUATION 8. For the given weld bracket shown in the figure,

22. Determine the maximum shear force on welds in N/mm.


23. Determine the maximum shear stress on welds in MPa.
24. If the load “P” is inclined from the horizontal by 60 degrees (downward going to the left direction), determine the maximum
shear stress on welds.

SITUATION 9. A steel column has an unsupported height of 5.4m is pin connected at both ends with side sways prevented. It
carries an axial load of 530 kN and a moment of 20kN.m at the top and 13.4 kN.m at the bottom which causes bending about the
major axis (Single curvature). Except for bracings at the top and the bottom, there is not lateral bracing about either major & minor
axis of the column.
Fy = 250 MPa, Es = 200000MPa.
Properties of steel section:
A = 7450 mm2 d=250mm
bf = 204mm t f = 13.6mm
t w = 8mm Sx = 694 x 103 mm3
