Assignment Title: Stress Transformations

Question# 01: (CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) [20]

State of plane stress at a point on surface of airplane fuselage is represented on the element oriented as
shown in the figure.
i. Apply the method of equilibrium, and determine state of stress at the point that is oriented 30
clockwise from the position shown.
ii. Apply the stress transformation equations and determine state of stress at the point that is oriented
30 clockwise from the position shown.
iii. Show the results of stress transformations obtained from part (i) and (ii) on a sketch.
iv. For the state of stress given in figure, determine the principal stresses. Also specify the orientation
of the element. Show the results on sketch.
v. For the state of stress given in figure, determine the maximum in-plane shear stress and average
normal stress at the point. Also specify the orientation of the element. Show the results on sketch.

Question# 02: (CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) [20]
Determine the equivalent state of stress on an element at the same point which represents (a) the principal
stress, and (b) the maximum in-plane shear stress and the associated average normal stress. Also, for each
case, determine the corresponding orientation of the element with respect to the element shown. Sketch
the results on each element.

Question# 03: (CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) [20]

The T-beam is subjected to the distributed loading that is applied along its centreline. Determine the
principal stress at point A and show the results on an element located at this point.

Question# 04: (CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) [20]
A single horizontal force P of magnitude 600 N is applied to end D of lever ABD. Knowing that portion
AB of the lever has a diameter of 30 mm, determine
i. The normal and shearing stresses acting on an element located at point H and having sides
parallel to x and y axes.
ii. The principal planes and the principal stress at point H.
