Assignment # 02: Department of Civil Engineering

The document is a report on the environmental and health impacts of paint products. It discusses how conventional paints use hazardous chemicals like VOCs that can irritate skin and respiratory systems and increase cancer risks. These chemicals also harm the environment when released. Eco-friendly paints use fewer VOCs and toxic chemicals. The report examines common paint ingredients like titanium dioxide and their environmental effects during manufacturing. It explores how VOCs from paints form ground-level ozone that contributes to global warming and respiratory issues. The conclusion recommends using water-based paints with low VOC levels and avoiding paints with undisclosed ingredients.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH IMPACT OF PAINT
PRODUCT

Abstract:
Paints are used in our daily life for the decoration of home, furniture.
But conventional paints are being said as harmful to both humans and
the environment. Hazardous chemicals are used in the production of
paints which effect on our body like irritate skin, trigger allergies, eyes,
air ways headaches, asthmatic reactions, and put increased stress on vital
organs such as the heart. 20% to 40% increased risk of lung cancer for
the those come into regular contact with or work with paint. Eco-
friendly paints are being termed as the safe substitute for such paints.
Companies find ways to achieve goals such as protection of the
environment, social well-being and economic development. Companies
try to achieve optimal efficiency and effectiveness of paints to make
eco-friendly, eco-design to minimize the environmental impacts.
Keywords: Paint, Environment, Pollution, VOCs, Pigments

Introduction:
Paints are composed of raw materials such as solvents, pigments, dyes
and other chemicals materials. The important these compounds possess
hazardous properties like white spirit, toluene & methyl benzene are
commonly used inorganic solvents & easily evaporate into indoor air.

Chlorinated paraffins, n-hexane, ethyl methyl ketoxime are used as

additives and binders to improve the performance of paints but besides
harmful health effects, once released into the environment cause harm
the ecosystems.
Some of these chemicals used have been found to have adverse effects
or could cause damage Environment.
●Titanium Dioxide TiO2 is a compound which is used in paints. It is the
main source of environment impact. It has high embodied energy (54 –
76 MJ/kg).

●Emissions of gases during manufacturing i.e. CO2, NO2, SO2, CH4

And VOCs.
●Colored pigment also impacts on environment It is ingredient of paint,
but it is not intense as compare to TiO2.
Understanding VOCs and Its Effects:
The most important group of chemicals of concern in paints is called
volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They evaporate into the indoor air
at the room temperature. – you can smell them while painting – and
when they are inhaled may cause health problems. Other possibly
hazardous chemicals have functions as biocides, pigments or provide a
specific surface like gloss, structure etc.

When evaporating, the solvents in the paint release VOCs into the
atomosphere; it reacts with oxygen to form “bad ozone”.

➤ VOCs + Oxygen ➜ “bad” ozone in the presence of sunlight

●This is contributory factor of the green house effect and a cause of global
warming
●This ozone is a major irritant. It causes eye, nose, and throat irritations, and can
lead to coughing, shortness of breath and even asthmatic symptoms.
These are the effects of VOCs on health of humans and environment.

Conclusion:
● Oil based paints generally contain more VOCs than water-based paints

We use water-based paints in which quantity of TiO2

●Use low level 0f organic solvent. High level of organic solvents is avoided which
are used in oil paint.
●Further reduce the quantity of harmful substance which is used in paint. Because
it effects on human health as well as environment.
● If the paint product ingredients are not published then don’t use that paint
●When old paint is repaired in your home or any building, you must be taking care
of your family, neighbors, pet to lead residues.
