MODULE 2 - Ramos

This document provides questions and analysis for self-examination and understanding the concept of self. It asks the reader to look in the mirror and describe themselves, aspects they feel good about, and aspects they need to improve on. It discusses how truly knowing oneself is difficult and reflects on different philosophers' views of self, including Socrates, Plato, Augustine, Descartes, Hume, Kant, and Merleau-Ponty. The reflection questions whether understanding oneself affects thoughts and actions, which philosopher's view is most similar to the reader's, and why understanding oneself is important.

Activity 1: Self Examination

Look at yourself in the mirror and answer the following questions:

1. How can you describe yourself based on your own perspective or point of you?
As a student, son, and citizen we all have a different perspective in life. We all have
different ways to live, we all have a unique shape, characteristics, personal
development that needs to build up. I am passionate, God-fearing and musical-
oriented.

2. What aspect of yourself do you feel good about? Why?

One of the things that I love about myself is that God is in my life, He guides me
through sorrow and pain. Being a positive character, always wanting to learn and
apply new things, and determined to live boundlessly.

3. What aspect of yourself do you believe you have to improve?

Sometimes we put ourselves down a lot because of the negative things around us
and anxious about failures and mistakes. This mindset that I am facing right now is
needed to develop and conquer.

Analysis:

Can anyone truly know one self?

No.

Were you able to answer the questions above with ease? Why?
Knowing our self means recognizing our strengths and weaknesses. We know
what we're doing, we know ourselves what is right in our self-perspective but
sometimes we act wrong by proving our understanding. Knowing our self helps us
to have joy in our hearts, peace, and contentment.

Abstraction:
Application and Assessment:
In your own words, state what is the meaning of Self for each of the following
philosophers.

SOCRATES

PLATO
Happiness is fund if we control our spirits and appetites

AUGUSTINE
Self is relation to God, One could not achieve inner peace without finding God’s love
DESCARTES

We are thinking things, understanding, doubt, affirm, deny, will, refuse and
imagine
HUME
Our consciousness changes constantly over time. There is no self that is constant

KANT
Our self is sewing machine that creates new clothes of experience, knowledge and
construct one’s self.
RYLE
Ourself acts by what our perspective believe
MERLEAU-PONTY

The physical body is important part of what makes up ourselves

Reflection:

“For you to understand people, you should first know yourself”.

Answer the following questions:

What is your concept about self?

Understanding our self is significant because it affects our thinking and action any
way.

Among the following philosophers, which one has the same (or at least similar) with
how you conceived of the SELF? Explain your answer.

I think one of the philosophers that similar to myself is Saint Agustine of Hippo.
Augustine emphasizes possessions and money doesn't give you peace but
loneliness. Augustine gives focus on finding God's love gives you peace and joy.

In your own opinion, why do you need to understand your self?

Our characters are not constant. Our mindset changes with time and experiences.
Knowing ourselves helps us to develop our confidence, empower our weaknesses
and build up our strengths.
