Teenagers and Friendships

Friendships during their teenage years can help the young people to feel a sense of acceptance and
belonging. They can be one of the most important things for the teenagers. In fact, parents sometimes feel
ignored or abandoned by their children in favour of friendships. This is a completely natural stage because
teenagers often feel rejected and hurt if they think they are being left out by their friends.

In addition, teenage relationships with peers, support the development of compassion, caring and
empathy. Furthermore, adolescent friendships are a big part of forming a sense of identity outside the family.
Although teen friendships may have some negative effects, they can also provide a wide range of benefits.

Definitely by having social connections, these teenagers stand to gain better self-esteem and to have a
happier, more optimistic look. They should also be stronger emotionally as well as have more empathy and
feelings of trust towards others.

Everyone knows that having good friends always makes one feel happier. The findings of scientific
studies have confirmed that teenage friendships can affect their emotional well-being. They attain better mental
health as there are less symptoms of depression. Consequently, they have good relationships with their
members and other people in the society. It is one of the keys to happiness. As the rates of anxiety and
depression are reduced, the young people can be expected to live longer.

Peer pressure can be either good or bad. In normal circumstances, some teens should have a great
influence on their friends doing positive things. However, there are also those who involve their friends in risky
activities such as smoking or playing truant. Nonetheless, the finding of a research has been concluded that,
“Teenagers can learn more quickly and more effectively if their peers are present rather than when they are on
their own.” In fact, in contrast to the belief of negative influence of peers, the study has found that friends are
much more likely to support each other’s efforts to do well. Therefore, they can achieve better performance.
