Information transfer
Is it important to speak with a British accent?
A person’s accent is an indicator of their hometowns as well as their social
backgrounds and educational levels. This is generally the case for everybody in any part of
the world. However, even within the same place, accents can be different. For example,
the accents of Received Pronunciation (RP) and Cockney are found in London.
RP is also known as “the Queen’s English”, “Oxford English” or “BBC English”. It
does not tell us anything about a person’s hometown. However, it reveals a person’s social
and educational backgrounds as this accent is usually spoken by people associated with
power, money and influence. Despite its influence, only around 5% of people living in the
United Kingdom actually speak with this accent. On the other hand, Cockney is an accent
spoken by the working class in the East End of London. There are many differences
between Cockney and RP. For example, Cockney speakers would replace the voiceless

2
“th” with “f”. For example, while an RP speaker would say “I have three pens”, a cockney
speaker would say “I have ‘free’ pens” which might cause confusion to many new English
learners.
Nowadays, majority of English speakers are non-native speakers. For them, English
is merely a communication tool. So, it does not make you an inferior speaker if you speak
with a Malaysian accent or it does not make you a superior speaker if you speak with a
British accent. When is someone’s accent an issue? The only real issue is intelligibility.
When your accent causes confusion to your listeners, you need to modify your
pronunciation to avoid communication breakdown.
In short, a language learner needs to be sensitised to the differences in
pronunciation in different accents so that they can communicate with English speakers
from all over the world.

Choose no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each answer.
