Transformer Cooling Systems

The document discusses transformer cooling systems. It outlines several key temperature thresholds for transformer operation including a maximum ambient temperature of 50°C and average cooling water temperature of 25°C. It also describes common transformer cooling identification symbols like ONAN for oil immersed natural air cooled and ONAF for oil immersed forced air cooled. Examples are given of dual rated transformers indicating standard load ratings under different cooling conditions. Tables of standard ratings for different voltage class transformers are also referenced.

1. According to the Transformer theory, the following temperature as

considered for their working nature.

 Maximum Ambient Temperature : 50°C

 Maximum daily average ambient air Temperature : 40°C
 Maximum Water temperature as cooling Medium : 30°C
 Average Cooling water Temperature : 25°C
 Minimum Ambient Temperature : 5°C

1. Identification of Transformer According to Cooling Method

They are identified by four symbols for each cooling systems for which rating is assigned by the
manufacturer:

Important:

1. Kind of Cooling Medium would be adopted are mineral oil of

flammable synthetic insulating liquid (O)Non-flammable synthetic
liquid (L), Gas (G), Water (W), Air (A), Solid insulant (S).
1. Kind of Circulation would be adopted are Natural (N), forced (Oil not
directed) (F),Forced (Directed oil) (D).

Fig.(a). Power Transformer ONAN Type

Fig.(b). Power Transformer ONAF Type

Symbols:

 ONAN - Oil Immersed Natural Air Cooled

 ONAF - Oil Immersed Forced Air Cooled
 OFAF - Oil Immersed with Forced oil circulation Forced Air cooled
Example :

110 / 11 kV, 50MVA Oil Immersed Transformer For the above dual rated power transformer
cooling system usually follows as:

ONAN / OFAF

ONAN - 60% & OFAF - 100%

The rating under ONAF condition although not guaranteed should be about 80%.

Standard rating for power transformer of voltage class commonly used are given in table.
TABLE – I, 11KV TRANSFORMERS

TABLE – II, 33 KV TRANSFORMERS

TABLE – III, 66 KV TRANSFORMERS
