Lincoln County High School Band LCHS Falcon Band

Welcome to the 2021 edition of the Lincoln County High School Falcon Band Handbook. The band director
and band boosters for the benefit of the members of the LCHS Falcon Band compiled this handbook.  We hope
this information will be most helpful to both parents and students alike.

This handbook outlines virtually all organizational and performance aspects of the Band Program.  Also, it is
intended to provide information regarding established policies and traditions for the purpose of promoting pride,
spirit, and unity within the Lincoln County High School Falcon Band.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Lincoln County High School Band is to provide a musical avenue for LCHS students to
further their musical and personal growth by creating aesthetic experiences for themselves and the community
of Fayetteville.

GOALS OF BAND MEMBERS

Band members strive to make music, make memories, and make meaningful connections.
To achieve this, they must be conscientious, be proactive, and be dedicated.

EXPECTATIONS OF BAND MEMBERS

● Each member will strive for high standards of excellence and always seek improvement.
● Each member will develop a sense of responsibility for attendance, preparation and each other.
● Each member will expand his/her awareness in rehearsal and performance to enhance the overall
individual and ensemble quality.
● Each member will develop self-discipline in and out of rehearsals.
● Each member will support and represent the school and the community through music and routine.

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS
Band members are expected to be at all rehearsals and performances, and to be on time.  The director has set up
the following attendance and grading procedures.

Certain events are considered “co-curricular”.  This means that these events are considered to be extensions of
the classroom that take place outside of regular class time. Co-curricular events therefore, require attendance by
ALL BAND STUDENTS. (Half-time performances, concerts, parades, marching contests, district/state
competition, graduation, etc.)

Certain events are considered “extra-curricular”.  This means that these require loss of class time other than
band class and are for the most part optional.  (solo & ensemble, honor bands, all-state).

Excused absences are possible under certain circumstances.  Examples are personal illness, death in immediate
family or extreme family emergency.  Examples of unexcused absences include: no transportation, piano
lessons, studying for tests, etc… Practice days will be established in advance. Please schedule all appointments
around practices. Students who have jobs MUST schedule their work times around band practices.
Work-related absences are not excused under normal circumstances.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE
Band section leaders will take attendance, they will then report to either the drum major(s) or the director who
will have a master list. This is always the correct procedure for taking attendance for both marching and concert
bands! If a student is not in their seat/spot on field at the appointed time, they are tardy, even if they are in the
band room or on the field.
Excused Absences - all rehearsal time missed must be made up within two weeks!
1. Pre-Excused Absences - All requests to be excused from band functions must be submitted in writing, in
advance of the activity for which the excuse is made. Absences can only be excused by the Director, and will be
dealt with on an individual basis. Students must provide a week’s notice before excused absence from
performance so we can find an alternate to fill in their spot.
2.  Illness/Emergency - If a rehearsal or performance is missed due to illness/emergency, please report to the
band director immediately. There must be a written excuse following the absence (same as school policy).

 GRADING POLICY
1.  A student’s grade will be lowered for an unexcused absence from a performance. Each performance will be
at least one test grade. More weight may be given to certain performances at the director’s discretion
(especially competitions). Test grades will make up 50% of the final grade.

2. A student's grade will be lowered for absences from planned rehearsals. Rehearsals will count as daily
grades. Daily grades will make up 50% of the final grade.

3. When absences are deemed excessive by the director, the student's standing as performing member of the
band will be re-evaluated.

5. Points will be deducted from performance/rehearsal grades for not having proper equipment, not following
the uniform policy, or not respecting the policies with point values attached to them that are outlined below.
Students may also lose credit for performances that they are suspended from participating in due to a policy
violation.

DISCIPLINE AND DISMISSAL

Occasionally it is necessary for a student to be dismissed from band. This is not an action taken lightly or
without a prior record of band and/or school violations. When it is necessary for a student to be dismissed from
the band program, several steps will be taken prior to and during the dismissal process. The following is a step
by step list of the process that will be followed to warrant dismissal from the band program.
Students with minor infractions of band guidelines:
1st Offense - Verbal Warning, laps/pushups/cleaning detail according to offense
2nd Offense - Private conference with student, I.S.S. or Detention hall assigned (1 – 3 days at director’s
discretion depending on offense) suspension of band activities (games/performances/competitions)
3rd Offense - Private conference with student with parents notified by phone
I.S.S. assigned (2 – 5 days at director’s discretion depending on offense) possible band suspension and/or
referral to administrator
4th Offense - Dismissal from band program

* Major infractions will be treated as a 3rd or 4th Offense, Minor infraction at the discretion of the band
director. This may result in immediate dismissal from the band program. If I cannot trust a student, they
become a liability to the band program and I will not risk taking them on away trips/competitions/overnight
trips, etc.
Major infraction examples follow:
- Alcohol, tobacco or drug use during a band activity
- Cases of school or band vandalism
- skipping class or after-school rehearsal (If you can not be trusted to be where you are supposed to be while
you are on campus, I can not trust you at away games, competitions, etc. when we are away from school/out of
town.)
- stealing
- Any activity demeaning to the band program (You represent everyone in the band while in uniform).
- Chronic absenteeism from rehearsals and/or performances may also warrant dismissal from the band program.
DUE TO THE FACT THAT DEFINING SEVERITY OF RULES INFRACTIONS VARIES FROM PERSON
TO PERSON, THE DIRECTOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DETERMINE WHAT IS A MINOR AND
MAJOR RULES INFRACTION IN ADDITION TO SITUATIONS MENTIONED ABOVE.

MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
Band Fees
It is very important that all fees are paid on time. All of our expenses are paid for through band fees and
fund-raising. Band, especially marching band, is an expensive endeavor. The combination of fees and
fundraisers ensure that we can operate by covering the following expenses:
● Instructional staff for band camp, $3300
● Instructional staff for school year, $3300
● Drill-writing services, $1000
● Rights to legally perform the show, $300
● Registration fees for competitions, $300-$500
● Transportation, $800
● Equipment, including guard silks/poles, percussion accessories, props, etc.
● Uniform maintenance
● Instrument maintenance
● Supplies such as water, first aid, gasoline, etc.
● Many other expenses that in a typical year amount to $40,000. A detailed budget will be presented
at the July booster meeting and posted on the website when approved.
We do numerous fundraisers, and we request that band membership help cover those expenses. Many band
programs around us have budgets well into six figures... We only break five! As well as many programs around
us have band student expenses ranging from $600 - $800+. We try our best to ensure that fees are kept as low as
feasible and that money does not keep someone from being in band, and we will work with anyone who needs
to make installment payments or have part/all of a fee waived. Please consult with the band director for further
instruction entailing fee-waiver forms. Fees required are below:
● $100 due by the first day of band camp.
● This covers basic materials for camp and instructional costs for staff.
● $50 due by the first game. The below items are covered by this:
● Student show shirt.
● Uniform maintenance (not guard).
● Competition transportation.
● Music (not guard).
● The following are fees for things only needed if a student does not have this:
● $30 for band shoes.
● $25 for instrument rental (mellophone, baritone, tuba, others, beside percussion)
● $10 for flip folder and lyre
● $200 for guard uniform (includes tunic, pants, shoes, and thermal to wear when cold)
● $50 for guard warm-ups
● Students are responsible for their own fees/monies/dues whether it is a fundraiser or a trip payment!
● If finances are difficult at times, a private consultation with the director should be arranged. We will
work with you.
Deductions for Multiple Children

There is a fee deduction of $50 for additional children participating in band per household.
● Household with one participant: $100 by band camp, $50 by the first game ($150 total)
● Household with two participants: $200 by band camp, $50 by the first game ($250 total)
● Household with three participants: $300 by band camp, $50 by the first game ($350 total)

Volunteer Credit Policy

Band expenses cover roughly 10% of our annual budget. The remaining 90% is done through various
fundraisers. Most of this revenue is brought in from the concession stands at football games, which requires 30
volunteers to run effectively! Credit opportunities up to $150 will be offered to help offset the fees. Each
student will be expected to fill 3 volunteer slots with each slot being worth a $50 credit. For families with more
than 1 student in the band, the required slots will be reduced by 1 for each child. For example: 2 students in
band = required 4 slots to be worked.
Credit program:
● 3 volunteer slots required for each student
● Multiple students required slots reduced by 1 per student (see example above)
● $50 credit for each slot worked
● **IF** additional slots are available, up to a maximum of 5 total slots may be worked for a
maximum of $250 credit. No guarantee is made that additional spots are available. Do not plan
your finances in such a way that you count on these additional spots.
● Volunteers will sign in when working slots. This will then be verified by the coordinator.
Credit will be only given to the volunteers who:
● Worked said slot at game/event.
● Are not in excess of 5 slots.
Families with extenuating circumstances such as job or health complications are required to fill out and submit
the hardship form to the board by the end of band camp. This will then be approved and solutions for
volunteering will be created. Every effort will be made to find volunteer opportunities for those unable to
participate in pre-determined slots.

Fee Waiver
Upon application for a fee waiver, a student's parent(s) will be expected to volunteer for 6-8 slots in the
Volunteer program.

Instrument Care
Your instrument is one of the most important items you possess. Without instruments, there could be no band. It
is vital that you maintain your instrument in proper working order. Instruments cost several hundred dollars to
several thousand dollars. Like the uniform, please respect your instrument and the investment your parents have
made in purchasing it. In case of possible damage or theft, we encourage you to have the proper insurance
coverage of each musical instrument that you own.
You will be expected to have your instrument repaired when needed. Mr. Hampton can do minor adjustments
(i.e.: mouthpiece pulled, pad replacement, etc.), but we do not have the facility for a full-fledged repair shop.
See Mr. Hampton first. If it needs to go to the shop, he will tell you. Use the local music stores when at all
possible
Instrument Policy
You are the only one who should play your instrument! Don't share your instrument for sanitary and instrument
safety reasons (this includes sticks and mallets). When not playing your instrument, always place it in your case.
Regardless of whether an instrument is personal or school-owned, discipline will be administered for improper
care.
Woodwind players should always have at least 2 reeds in their case and keep an extra reed with them at all
times. If a reed breaks, you don't have to go back to your case this way. Rotate your reeds by playing on a
different one each day. This ensures that you aren't always "breaking in a new reed". Keep all joints greased and
in working order. Don't twirl flutes or clarinets! They are not batons and if you drop them, they will break!
Never leave your reed on the mouthpiece when you store your instrument. This causes premature damage to the
reed and encourages unsanitary mold growth! Keep reeds in reed cases.
Brass players should keep mouthpieces in their hands or pockets during cold weather to ensure a warm
embouchure when it is time to play. Keep all valves and slides oiled regularly, and have extra oil on hand!
Keep your instruments clean! Woodwinds should all swab their instruments after playing them. Brass players
should periodically clean the inside of their instruments and the slides. Brass players should shine their bells
before a performance.
Instruments go home with you! Practicing is a requirement! Arrangements can be made for larger instruments
to have a “practice instrument” at home while keeping the main instrument at school. See Mr. Hampton for
details.
School Owned Instruments
Your school-owned instrument will be issued to you in good working order. It is your responsibility to keep it
that way. You and your parents will be responsible for any damage to the instrument that occurs while the
instrument is signed out to you. All of the above items apply to care for the instrument. If you blatantly abuse a
school instrument, you will lose the privilege of using a school instrument and will be dealt with through the
school administration. Do not eat food or drink a soft drink right before playing an instrument. The sugar from
the food/drink will be deposited inside the instrument and can damage pads/mechanisms and cause mold to
grow. Auxiliary equipment will be provided. There is a $25 maintenance fee for regular repairs and cleaning
per semester. If using a school owned instrument, you will be required to complete and return the “Instrument
Agreement” form.

Practicing
All band students should practice regularly. The time you practice should be determined by your need for
improvement. Each member of the band is an integral part of the whole, and every part is important. If one
person does not know their part or execute it correctly, the whole group suffers. As a member of the band, you
are responsible for doing whatever it takes to do your part as a member of the team. During the summer is the
best time to improve by taking private lessons. I can find private teachers for those who are interested. Please
contact Mr. Hampton for lesson information.

Attendance at all performances is mandatory (even over the fall break).  All performance dates are set up in
advance to allow family scheduling.  Rehearsals are also scheduled and mandatory.  Band Camp is mandatory
because it is the most important practice time as that is when we learn the whole first half of the field show.
(Drill, music and routines are taught during this very important time!) The only instance in which a student can
be excused from band camp is if they have enlisted in the military and have their required camp dates during
band camp. They will be responsible for informing the director ahead of time, and making arrangements with
their section leaders/band director to have extra practices to catch up.

Once school begins, after-school rehearsals are scheduled. The marching band practices on Mondays, Tuesdays,
and Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. This time may be extended to 6:30pm at the beginning of the season, or in
instances of repeated rehearsal rain-outs. Rehearsal time will be reduced toward the end of the season based on
progress. (usually to 5:30pm). Please call the director prior to the scheduled time if there is a conflict. Having a
job is not an acceptable excuse. Make sure the employer is aware you are an important part of the band and
make him aware of your schedule.
Physical Conditioning
Marching band is an intense physical activity. Playing an instrument or spinning a flag while maneuvering
around the field requires a lot from your body. As such, the student is responsible for conditioning his or herself
prior to band camp and throughout the season, as well as maintaining a healthy diet. Conditioning will also take
place everyday throughout the marching season to ensure students can perform the physical tasks needed to
participate in the show, including stretches, cardio, laps, push-ups, sit-ups, etc.
Academic Expectations
The LCHS Band expects its members to be model students and well-rounded people, and part of those
expectations relates to academic performance. Students must maintain an overall average of 70 or above in each
class. Students who fall below this will be placed on academic probation and be required to submit weekly
progress reports from their current teachers to the director in an attempt to help monitor and improve academic
standing. If a dancer falls below this mark on a report card, they will be sidelined from the halftime
performance until evidence of improvement is provided. Students are responsible for consulting teacher(s) for
academic assistance.

Alternative Spots

Marching band is a competitive activity. Absences cause significant penalties when being judged at
competition. As such, some spots in the halftime show will be alternate spots. These spots are designated for
students who are deemed in tryouts to need the most improvement. They may shadow other students who
anticipate an absence.

When marching with the Falcon Band, each band member represents their own family, their school and
their community.  While in uniform and/or part of the band they are on display.  Remember to always act
and be your best. One person has the power to change the image of the entire organization for better or
worse. You are always performing!

RESPONSIBILITY FOR PERSONAL ITEMS
Do not ask the director, any chaperone, or other band member, watch or guard any personal items you may have
at school. Please leave all personal items of value at HOME. The band or band parents are not responsible for
any personal items lost or stolen at the school or other performance location.

REHEARSAL POLICY
1. Attendance will be taken promptly at the start of rehearsal.
2. Tardies are not tolerated, and will be dealt with when the member arrives.
3. All students are asked to display a professional attitude toward rehearsals. You perform what you practice!
4. Due to the number of students in the Falcon Band, talking must be kept to a minimum.  When the band is
halted, immediately stop playing and/or marching and listen to instructions.  This is the only way to efficiently
use rehearsal time.  Students not complying with this request will face disciplinary actions. (i.e.; push-ups, laps,
ISS).
5. Appropriate (Marching) Rehearsal Attire:  T-shirts, shorts/jeans, etc. and tennis shoes. Do not go without
shoes.  Do not wear boots, flip-flops, high heels, sandals, or dress shoes to rehearsals. The proper marching
style cannot be executed in this type of foot attire. (performance shoes/boots are acceptable)
6. Band Members are responsible for memorizing all halftime show music/routine.
7. Disruptive/Vulgar/Obscene behavior in any form will not be tolerated.
8. Abusive/Vulgar/Obscene language in any form will not be tolerated.
9. Hats should not be worn in the Band room or in any part of the building. (exception: Band Camp)
10. All Members must remain at rehearsal until dismissed by the Drum Major and/or the Director.  Dismissal
will take place after the final announcements.
11. Students are responsible for having a flip folder music lyre with all music for all rehearsals and
performances. (Section leaders/captains are responsible for having their section folders with drill sheets.)
12. Students are required to have a pencil at all rehearsals to mark music and drill movements. Section leaders
will do checks periodically.
13. Students are required to practice in order to execute their music/routine correctly. This is part of their
responsibility to the band.

DROP OUTS
Students who drop out of the Falcon Band are not allowed re-entry into the band program unless they meet the
following criteria:
1. Drop out was due to schedule conflict with academic class required for graduation that was ONLY
offered during the band class period. (A conference with/letter from the appropriate guidance counselor
is required in order to meet this criteria.)
2. Drop out was due to medical reasons.
3. Approval by director after a meeting with parents.

BAND CAMP
Camp attendance is mandatory for all members. There are no exceptions, except family emergencies and
pre-cleared family conflicts.  Band camp is the time that basic techniques of marching, discipline, and attitudes
are established. It is also the main time for learning the half time show that will be performed all fall. It is a
unique experience of learning, socializing and physical exertion that cannot be made up.
Equipment may be left at the band room. Students are responsible for bringing their own lunch. Students
will have use of water fountains and bathroom facilities at the school.
Band members should wear hats, sun block, sunglasses, bug repellent, light colored clothing, comfortable tennis
shoes and socks. Students will not be allowed to march in sandals or flip flops!

Instructors will be on hand to make us even better. These instructors are hired by the band director to teach
special techniques and help finalize the show. Instructors will be college students and/or other band
directors/music majors who have many years of teaching experience.

Please be respectful to all chaperones, band parents, and staff.  Remember, they are donating their time
for you.

UNIFORM POLICY
The Lincoln County High School Band uniform is an expensive item. Each time you wear the uniform, you are
wearing as much as $700 worth of clothing items. Although cost is not the primary reason for taking care of the
uniform, many people relate to the dollar value of an item.
The primary reason to take proper care of the uniform is the respect for what the uniform stands for and the
understanding that it is after all school property much like a school owned instrument. It should be considered
an honor to wear a Lincoln County High School Band uniform. Wear the uniform with pride and treat it with the
same respect and pride when not wearing it. A dirty, un-pressed uniform being displayed by a band member
reflects a negative attitude toward the band and what it stands for.
You will be shown how to wear the uniform properly (after uniforms are issued). You will be expected to wear
the uniform properly at all times. This means completely with all zippers zipped, buttons buttoned etc. There
will be times when the jacket will not be worn with the rest of the uniform. If carrying the jacket, it must be
carried over your arm. It should not be carried over your shoulder. If you are wearing the uniform in public, it
must be all the way on--not unzipped or unbuttoned and "hanging" on you. Report any uniform problems to Mr.
Hampton or the appropriate band parents immediately after noticing the problem. Waiting could make the
problem larger and more difficult to fix. Band hats will be worn at all times until instructed to remove them by
the Director, Drum Major or Band Staff. Black socks (without writing or logos) must be worn with the
uniform at all times. Socks must be calf length and not ankle socks.
Band T-shirts and athletic, zipper-less shorts must be worn under the uniforms at all times. The shirts are
included in yearly fees. (No tank-tops, spaghetti straps, or other non-band shirts are permitted. This prevents
sweat from soaking into the uniform and discoloring it.) You are responsible for all parts of the uniform. If you
lose a part of the uniform (or the uniform itself) or damage it while participating in something unbecoming a
LCHS Band member, you and your parents will pay for repair or replacement costs. Section Leaders will be
responsible for uniform inspection within their sections before each performance! Points will be deducted from
the performance grade for failing inspection, and depending on the problem, the offending band member may
not be allowed to march in the show. When not being worn, the uniform is to be properly placed on a hanger
with the neck clasp fastened. Do not temporarily hang or place the uniform in a place where part of it is
touching the floor. Only small “studded” earrings are to be worn with the uniforms – no dangling earrings.
NOTE: EVERYONE is responsible for every part of his or her own uniform. Your parents will be financially
responsible for replacement or repair costs on all or any items lost, stolen or damaged (other than normal wear
and tear). You will check out your uniform before each performance (games and competitions). You will turn in
your uniform after each performance (game and competitions). It is your responsibility to dress out in your
uniform for each performance. If your uniform is left out after a performance, you will be subject to a point
deduction from your performance grade and disciplinary action.
UNIFORM REPLACEMENT COSTS:
Coat/Jacket $300 Shako $150
Hanger $5 Shako Box $40
Bibbers/Pants $50 Beret (Tubas Only) $15
Garment Bag $15
Repair costs will be handled on a case-by-case basis in discussion with Mr. Hampton and Uniform
Chairperson.
THE BAND FACILITY
Each band member should do his/her best to keep the band room in the best possible shape. Please pick up any
trash items that you might see inside or outside of the band room EVEN IF IT IS NOT YOURS. If you are part
of the band, it is your responsibility to keep the band area clean. Any trash in or around our facility reflects
poorly on our organization.
1. GUM, CANDY, FOOD OR DRINK (except for water) are not permitted in the band room or any room
associated with the band at any time (planned social activities may be excluded). Soft drinks may be consumed
in the hallway area or outside the band room. Put any trash you see in the trash can! No gum chewing while in
uniform and/or playing your instrument.
2. All instruments are to be stored in the proper place.
3. Only handle and/or play your instrument. This includes percussion instruments and jazz band instruments. If
special circumstances arise, see Mr. Hampton for permission to use an instrument not assigned to you.
4. Do not write on the marker board, music stands, or any other surface not designed for such an activity.
5. Do not move chairs and stands from or to rooms without specific instruction to do so. If you move any item
in the band room, please put it back in its proper place. Do not lean on band chairs or put your weight on music
stands. If you damage a chair or stand, you will be responsible for its cost.
6. Do not leave money or valuables in the band room. The band cannot be responsible for them.
7. Do not touch, move or use any equipment that does not belong to you or is not checked out to you.
8. The uniform room and band office is off limits to all students unless given permission to use that room by the
Director. (Band members are allowed in the office when Mr. Hampton is in the office unless told otherwise.)
9. The band office phone will be available for emergency calls after school hours. It is not to be used to make
personal calls. School policy states that all calls about transportation needs/changes should be made in the
attendance office.
11. The band room is not the social gathering place for the school. Band students and music appreciation
students only! (Band students/parents only after school hours)
The student and/or parents will be responsible for any damages to the band room area, equipment, etc.
incurred by the student.

AUXILIARY GROUPS
The Color Guard is comprised of students from band and selected students from the student body.  Positions in
the "auxiliary line" is by audition only. The auxiliary is considered an integral part of the marching band and
performs in half-time shows, competitions and parades.

Because of the nature of the skill required, extra practice sessions are occasionally held for the guard. They
practice on technique and skills. They also practice with the band as a whole. The band and band boosters
provide performance flags and props. Auxiliary members are responsible for their uniforms and pre-designated
props.

Band/Guard members are expected to sign up for a band or music class during the regular school day. See Mr.
Hampton about certain “special exceptions.”

OVERNIGHT TRIPS
The directors will give the students a complete agenda that includes telephone numbers and directions for
interested parents. This will include special dress requirements for each trip.  Usually normal school attire is
appropriate to wear while traveling on the bus.

On MOST occasions students are given a choice of with whom they want to ride on the bus with and with
whom they wish to room.  Usually four students will be assigned to a room.  Each night there will be an
in-room/ lights out time.  There will be a full complement of chaperones.  Each will be assigned specific
students that are their responsibility during the trip.  Chaperones are not there to guard but to help.  They will
not be responsible for student’s money or possessions.

Most important is the impression that students from Lincoln County leave with the area they visited.  Therefore,
all school rules continue to apply on all band trips.  The band directors are in charge of discipline.  Parents may
be called to pick up their child (at the parents' expense) if a student does not follow the rules!

Students will not be allowed to leave the band group to visit friends or relatives in the area.  Parents/family
members may come to visit the student during the student’s free time (i.e., 3rd quarter, before or after the
game/activity…)

All food and transportation expenses are the student’s responsibility.  All trips are planned well in advance, and
each band student will be informed of the cost beforehand.  If the costs are high, a system of installment
payments will be worked out.  Also, the students will be given fundraising projects to work on to earn student
credits to offset some of the costs.

Students must obey all school rules while participating with the band on campus or off campus.

Students will be dismissed and/or placed on probation from the band program for participating in illegal
activities while participating with the band.

 DAY TRIPS
The LCHS Falcon Band relies on the support of chaperones for supervision on trips.  Many parents enjoy this
experience.  Here are some of the tasks of a chaperone: supervising behavior, giving minor first aid; quick
uniform repairing; helping with loading and unloading; passing out food, blankets and cushions; and supporting
the band during performances.

The band does carry a full first aid kit with it where ever it goes.  However, if your student has special physical
problems, please be sure the directors are aware of the circumstances! A medical/emergency form must be
filled out by each student in the band.

All students must use school provided transportation (school buses!) to all band events! The band provides
transportation to and from most all scheduled events, and it is highly emphasized that all band students travel
with the band to and from events.  In the event that there must be a deviation from this rule (ex. testing, illness,
family emergency . . .) the student must present in writing a request from a legal guardian to ride home from an
event with a parent/guardian. This is board policy.

Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to travel home from an event (separate from the band)
without written notification.  Students will not be allowed to travel with friends or girlfriends/boyfriends from
or to an event!

For away football games, it is not unusual for the band to depart shortly after school is dismissed for the day.
Students and parents will be notified of the time of departure and expected arrival.  They are expected to have
instruments and uniform at the school on time.  The band will be notified in advance if they are stopping for
meals so that they may bring money for food.

Also, students will be allowed to go to the bathroom during the games in groups of not more than five.  No one
will be allowed to go to the restroom alone.

Departure for one-day contests will usually be early on Saturday mornings.  Again students will be informed of
departure times.  All day trips do have meal times planned into them.  Students will be expected to pay for their
own meals unless otherwise specified.

Arriving home from football games and contests are often late at night.  The directors will give you an
estimated time of arrival.  The students will be allowed into the band room to phone home.  If there will be an
unexpected delay, we will call ahead and notify the school/parents.

4. Students are expected to obey all Director, Staff, Chaperone or Driver instructions. Students are also expected

5. Bus times are set to minimize cost and allow enough time for the band to adequately prepare for a
performance. All students are expected to report to the bus on time.
6. Students are not to leave any items on the bus at the end of the trip. Students are expected to clean their area
of the bus at the end of a trip.
7. If a student has been mishandled by a driver, chaperone, staff or the director, an investigation will occur with
the assistance of the school administration and Transportation Director. Complaints against a band member will
be dealt with in similar fashion.
8. All students must sign their bus roll sheet at the beginning of the trip. Students may not change busses
mid-trip unless special circumstances require it.
9. Parents must inform Mr. Hampton and submit a note AT THE PERFORMANCE if they wish to take a
student home with them that is signed up on the bus roll sheet. Busses will not leave until all students are
accounted for.

STAND BEHAVIOR POLICY (HOME AND AWAY GAMES)

1. You must sit in your assigned section.
2. Do not leave your section of the band bleacher area unless you have permission from the director.
3. Always be ready to play. Keep your eyes on the Drum Major or Director, and help your fellow band
members know when to play.
4. When the band plays, we all play, not just certain people.
5. Do not put your instrument anywhere that it might be damaged.
6. Do not play another students instrument.
7. Reed players. Always have an extra reed handy. (see Inst. Care page)
8. Keep the seating fairly close, because spreading looks messy and the band is highly visible from the other
side of the field. Also, spreading makes it harder for the band to play together.
9. When playing in the stands, play with musical taste. When playing in the stands, we should play with the
same attention to musical standards that we observe while performing on the field or on stage.
10. Band members are permitted to leave with a parent if prior arrangements have been made. In case of an
emergency, the parent must give a note to the director AT THE PERFORMACE. This is school policy.
11. There will be ABSOLUTELY NO EATING in uniform. Drinks will be provided to band members at each
performance. Eating in uniform will result in a dropped grade and 3 detention periods.
12. Absolutely no one is allowed to sit with the band except for staff and approved chaperones.
13. Visitors are to check in with the director.
14. Only band uniform hats are to be worn unless told otherwise by the director.
15. Uniforms are to remain on in the stands unless told otherwise by the director. (see Uniform page) In
extreme heat circumstances, the director will announce that the top part of the jacket may be unbuttoned and
unzipped down to the sash. This, however, is not to be done without director authorization.
16. Students will only be reminded of minor infractions once. Persistent infractions could result in suspension
from performance/dismissal from band at the director’s discretion.
17. Specific times will be given for various dismissals and returns in the stands. Being late will result in
disciplinary action by the director and cause other students to possibly be late as well.
18. Do not, under any circumstances, speak in a negative context about other musical and athletic groups when
performing at events, as well as our own band and teams. This will result in a letter-grade deduction or in being
sidelined from the halftime show.

INSTRUMENT COVERAGE
According to state law, public school districts are not liable for personal property that is stolen at school.
The band department strongly encourages you to include your son/daughter's instrument on your homeowner's
insurance policy.

CONCERT SEASON
Students involved are expected to attend all planned rehearsals and sectionals. Rehearsal and sectional
attendance will part of student grades (see Attendance and Grading Procedures).

Each year, near the end of April, Solo and Ensemble competitions are held.  Students will prepare their own
music and pay a small registration fee for each event.  Medals may be won for those achieving a superior rating.
The band will pay for medals.

RECOGNITION AND REWARDS

Recognition is possible by improving your standing in your section. Challenges for chair positions go on all the
time. A challenge may be made only once per week. You must have each challenge approved by the band
director. If you are challenged, you must accept or your chair is forfeit. All challenges will be decided by the
band director.
Band Members are also given the opportunity to try out for All-State and Honor Bands. These bands provide
the students with the opportunity to play with the best students from this and other states in a unique
environment. Medals may be earned for participation in honor bands.

Auditions are held each spring for the positions of drum major(s) & color guard.  The band director will bring in
qualified judges to audition these units. The final choices are based upon audition scores. The decisions are
FINAL. By auditioning, you agree to abide by their decisions.

Leadership can also be earned by trying out for section leader. These auditions are based not only on
instrumental skill, but on the results of an interview and evaluation of your performance in the previous year.
You must be at least a 2nd year member to be section leader.

MUSIC
Each member of the band will be provided with one copy of each piece of music to be learned. If music is lost,
the band director will furnish a new copy for a charge of $0.25.
All music must be returned at the end of the season. Music is very expensive, and it is rendered useless if parts
for every instrument are not available.

LCHS BAND BOOSTERS

The purpose of the band booster organization is to assist and promote the band and its activities.
The boosters are an invaluable resource to the band, as the band could not function without them. The boosters
raise financial support for the band, provide chaperones, and help with the overall organization of band
activities. It is essential that all parents/guardians of the band members are involved in the booster organization.

The time and dates of monthly band booster meetings are set at the first meeting of the school year. Currently,
meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm in the band room.

This is a time for idea sharing, discussions and decisions. All band parents, both high school and middle school,
are welcome!
