Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the


Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.

1 Modal Verbs

Communication plays a vital role in everyone’s life. In the English language, the
struggle with the use of modal verbs is normal as their range of application is quite
broad. With that said, practice is important and and to start it is by finding out which
verbs are considered modals. When modal verbs are used correctly, a grammatically
correct sentence is achieved.

Modals are a type of auxiliary verb also known as helping verb that show a speaker’s
attitude about what they are expressing. These verbs are placed in front of main
verbs and add meaning to a sentence. The meaning that modal verbs add include
ability, possibility, certainty, permission, requirements, suggestions, and advice.
Modal verbs are not conjugated. This means that we do not add –ed or –ing at the
end of a modal verb.

Examples of modal verbs are : can, could, may, might, would, should, must.
Can is used to:

a.express a general ability


b. express a future or conditional possibility
c. make offers
d. make a request or ask for permission
e. give permission
Sentence examples:

 Ella can lift over 100 pounds.


 This product can brighten the colors of your clothes.
 You can send the bill to Maria or Josh.
 Can I hold that for you?
 You can dive at this end of the pool.

Could is used to:


a. describe a past ability
b. express reported speech for can
c. describe a possible current event or situation
d. describe a possible future event
e. suggest a possible future action
f. make offers
g. make a request or ask for permission
Sentence examples:

 When he was a child, he could speak three languages.


 Jhon isn’t here, he could be studying at the library.
 The situation could improve later this month.
 David could manage the new office.
 Could I charge my phone here?

Might is used to:


a. express a possibility
b. request or ask for permission
c. give permission
d. make a polite offer
e. express wishes and hopes
Sentence examples:

 The pandemic might end soon.


 They might be poor, but they are happy.
 It’s cloudy outside. It might rain soon.
 This dress might look expensive but it only costs 500
pesos.

Would/Will is used to:

a. To express beliefs about the present or future


b. To talk about what people want to do or are willing to do
c. To make promises, offers or requests
Sentence examples:

 We will have to take the train.


 It would be very expensive to stay in the hotel
 The government would be happy to see people following the
laws.

Must is used to:


a.to give emphasis to an opinion
b. to give recommendations
c. to say something that is really necessary
d. to make an assumption
Sentence examples:

 If you will go out, you must wear a mask.


 You must be so tired after running that marathon.
 Students must not run in the corridors.

2 Using Adverbs Appropriately

Learning how to use adverbs is a great way for you to expand your communicative
capacities. Adverbs provide diverse and interesting ways to describe how and when
actions are completed, their appropriate use allows students to get more detailed and
focus with their descriptions, both orally and in writing. Understanding how adverbs
fit into sentences grammatically helps students communicate effectively.

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or


even a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella). Adverbs often end
in -ly, but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts.
Tom Longboat did not run badly.
Tom is very tall.
The race finished too quickly.
Fortunately, Lucy recorded Tom’s win.
Kinds of Adverbs
Adverb of Manner
 Is used to tell the way or how something is done
She moved slowly and spoke quietly.

Adverb of Place
 indicates an objects postion in relation to another
She has lived on the island all her life.
She still lives there now.

Adverb of Frequency
 describes how often something occurs
She takes the boat to the mainland every day.
She often goes by herself.

Adverb of Time
 tells when, how often and how long an action happened.
She tries to get back before dark.
It's starting to get dark now.
She finished her tea first.
She left early.

Adverb of Degree
 tells about intensity of something
Her father was extremely ill.
The traffic is terribly disgusting.
