Engl9-Q4-Module2 - Judge The Relevance and Worth of Ideas
Engl9-Q4-Module2 - Judge The Relevance and Worth of Ideas
I had one experience in the class when I expressed my disagreement to a topic about
people criticizing the government. My classmates always tell that people should do whatever
the government has commanded them to do and to support all of its undertaking. I
expressed my opinion about the matter, that it is really our duty to follow and support the
government, given that the endeavors are for the good of the majority of people. I also put
emphasis on the idea that criticisms are instrumental to make the system more competent, if
only taken positively.
From this, I realized that people differ from opinions and ideas, and making known
your opinions and ideas to others does not mean being disrespectful. It is one way of
showing that diversity owes respect. If we know how to respect each other’s differences, we
could live a contented and peace-loving life.

Cite one (1) statement and your reason/s for your answer about that statement.
I always listen to different views to help me with what to decide. From simple to complex
decisions in life, I always refer to other views especially from people that might help me and
make my decision better. It’s also one way of avoiding failures. Others might have learned their
lessons already from my decisions, thus I must solicit ideas from them.
WHAT’S NEW
These days you are challenged to decide about what to do, what to say or even what to believe
in. You may think about spending more time playing online games, getting most of your time
scrolling on social media platforms, watching movies, or having yourself engage in your studies.
You may be thinking about some other things and reasoning about these things; the outcome
may influence you negatively or positively.
Read each of the given situations carefully and try to respond to what is asked from you.
1. Your friend convinces you to buy a newly released cellphone with good features even though
your old cellphone is still working fine. You know you can buy it because you have savings,
which you have been keeping well. What will be your response to your friend?
I would tell him that my cellphone still functions well, and it would be excessive to buy a new
phone. I would tell him that I have been saving money for more valuable purpose, and I would
not sacrifice this just for a newly released cellphone with good features. It is not my priority for
now.
2. Your brother or your sister asks your help to teach him or her about a certain topic that you
know well, but your sibling does not know much. You are also doing your school’s tasks during
that time. What will you reply to your sibling?
I will teach her the topic that she does not know. I would tell her that it is easy to understand,
just pay attention and I will explain it to her. It would not take too much time to be able to let
her understand the topic if she will just listen carefully. I will be generous to set aside my task
and give way to her.

Activity 2. At this point, you have understood the short story, express your reaction about the
events and characters of the story. This will lead you to take your stand and make your own
judgment of the story. Answer the following questions below.
1. What do you think is/are the event/s in the story when Mathilde is happy?
Mathilde is happy when she dances all night with her gown and jewelry (the necklace). In the
story, she was not contented about everything. She wanted to be rich, have fancy gowns and
jewelries that she cannot really afford.
2. How does Mathilde see her life with his husband throughout her life’s story?
Mathilde sees her life with his husband as miserable that she cannot afford to buy fancy gowns
and luxurious jewelries. She sees her husband as the one who must provide everything for her,
not only the needs, but also the wants. She wants an exclusive life that they cannot afford to
have, and this was the cause of her unhappiness.
3. In the story, how would you describe Mathilde’s husband? Jeanne Forestier?
They are who they are, they do not pretend. They are contented with what they have, thankful
for whatever situation they are in and wherever they are in life. Mathilde’s husband is a perfect
one for many people. He’s a kind of husband who will do everything just to make his wife
happy. Jean Forestier is a good and generous friend.
4. What does the necklace symbolize in the story?
The necklace symbolizes truthfulness and falsity. It teaches us that not everything that shines is
gold.
5. If you were part of the story, what would you do or tell Mathilde to change the outcome of
the story?
If I were part of the story, I would tell Mathilde that it is better to be authentic than pretentious.
If you really cannot afford to wear a gown and have a luxurious jewelry, then wear whatever you
have and whatever is available. There is no shame on being authentic; being pretentious is what
is shameful.
6. What decision from Mathilde and her husband do you think would make an impact for their
good?
It is when they learned their lesson and worked harder and harder to survive every day to be
able to pay for their debt. If they would only continue working together, living beyond their
means, it would make a great impact on them.
Do some of the characteristics and their influence on the story like the characteristics and their
impact to the society, or even to the people you know? If yes, can you cite a specific situation?
Yes, the traits of the characters are evident even to our society today. There are people who
used to borrow money from their friends/loved ones to treat a group of persons, and appear as
if they are rich, generous and chivalrous. They even upload photos in social media and let
people see their fortune, despite the fact that the money they spent was just borrowed. At the
end, people with this habit become problematic as to how are they going to pay all the money
that they borrowed.
What do you learn from the story? Do you find the text effective in terms of how the author
presented it to tell you what the text he is trying you to realize?
I learned from the story that there is no shame on being authentic, and we should live within our
means. We will never be truly happy if we try to pretend to be somebody. The way the author
presented the story allowed us to make our own interpretation. It was an effective and smart
way of teaching a morale in a form of a story.
WHAT I CAN DO
Apply what you have learned from this module by responding to real-life scenarios.
Think of a personal experience in which you encountered a work or an idea, in which you were
asked to comment or judge about it. You have reflected about it, listened to other views, or read
some ideas, and you were able to successfully comment or judge about it. Share your thoughts
by reflecting them to the given questions below:
What was the encounter that you had? It was about the idea of having an “academic
freeze” when CoViD-19 emerged and affected
the entire educational system.
Did you listen to other views or read ideas Yes I did listen to other opinions about the

or reading? point of view of the students, parents,
teachers and school administrators. I got
various ideas from different perspectives.
They have different situations too that made
them believe that it is worthy to have or not
to have an academic freeze.
What did you consider before giving your I consider the ways other people see this

people, agreement and disagreement. I
considered people’s frustrations and fortunes.
I tried everything that I can not to hurt
anyone.
How did the person/s involved react about They have negative reactions about my
your comment or judgment? disagreement to having an academic freeze.
Though distance learning would be a totally
different experience for me and I have no
assurance if I can adapt to the new system, I
considered also the teachers who will lose
their jobs if there will be an academic freeze. I
considered the schools that are contributing
taxes which we need for this time.
What was the impact of your comment or I expressed my opinion in a way that I want
judgment? them to open their minds as well and be able
to see the situation in different lenses. They
had some realizations at the end and many of
them changed their positions about the
matter.
ASSESSMENT
Think of one (1) specific short story that shows sound reasoning or has lessons that you can
learn from. It could be your own story, your favorite story, or another story that you listened to
or read from. Share the story by completing the table below:

What do you learn from this story? From this story, I learned that it is important
to view a particular dilemma in different
facets. You may understand the matter on the

of-view as well. You should not be speaking
only for yourself and your interest, we have to
speak for the good of the general public.
