and truthfulness of ideas.
When you hear the word relevance, what
comes to your mind? Or what is the word that
we can associate with the word relevance? Relevant or related, ma’am.
to a person, place, thing or idea. Importance or significance, ma’am.

Okay, very good! Those words are actually

associated with the word relevance.

For the definition, who can read?

A source is said to be relevant if it
provides useful information regarding a
given question of interest.
Thank you. So, remember that when we
say relevant, it should provide useful
information that’s why it is important or
significant.

How about the word truthfulness?

Truth, ma’am.
Reality or based on facts.
Alright, very good! Who can read the
definition of truthfulness? A source is said to be truthful if it
actually supplies the information it
possesses.
Thank you. When we say truthfulness, the
information should be provided with a lot of
facts or evidences so the information can
be considered as true.

Remember!
To determine the relevance and
truthfulness of an idea presented, here are
the basic aspects to consider in identifying
the relevance of the ideas presented from
the material viewed;

a. Fact

Who can give me the definition of fact

based on the activity that we had a while a When we say fact, it has evidence to
go? support it, ma’am.

Excellent! Now, who can read its definition?

A fact refers to something true or real,
which is backed up by evidence,
documentation, etc.
A fact should be based on observation
or research, it should also represent
something that really happens and is
not debatable since the information is

should be supported by evidences that
could be found on documentations, articles,
researches and etc. It is not debatable,
given the fact that it based on truth. You
can’t argue about the information or details
because it has already been proven.

1. Your heart pumps blood through
your body.
2. The leaves of growing plants are
usually green.

3. My history teacher hates me.
4. The movie was boring.
5. The TV shows in ABS-CBN are
more entertaining than the

Now, facts and opinions help us determine

how true a statement. Below is the
comparison chart for you to understand
better the difference between facts and
opinion.
Alright, do you now understand the
difference between fact and opinion? Yes, ma’am.

Okay, let’s try it.

 Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III was the

15th President of the Philippines.
 Kathryn Bernardo has a beautiful
hair.

At this juncture, let us distinguish fact and

opinion in this short paragraph.

Sentence 1 – Fact
Sentence 2 – Fact
Sentence 3 – Opinion
Sentence 4 - Fact
Sentence 5 – Fact
Alright class, you were able to distinguish Sentence 6 - Opinion
the fact and opinion statements in this
paragraph, so you already know the
difference between the two. It is important
to know the difference because it helps us
to determine how true a statement is.

There is another way of understanding an

article is through identifying the main idea
and its supporting details.

MAIN IDEA – is the most important thought

about the topic. The topic is the person,
place, thing, or idea being written about.

SUPPORTING DETAILS – can be defined

as additional information that explains,
defines, or proves an idea.

How do we find main idea and supporting

details?

Let us have this example:

“Homeless people have many problems. In
winter, it’s hard to stay warm and it gets too
hot in summer. It’s also hard to keep things
safe without a home. Worst is the lack of
privacy.”
To find the main idea, we have 2 ways:
1. Find the topic
-Read the text and ask yourself,
“What or who is the article about?”
or “What does the author want me to
know about the topic?”
In the example, what is the topic? The
author talks about “Homeless people.”

2. Read the first and last sentences of

the paragraph.
-Authors often state the main idea
near the beginning or end of the
paragraph.
Okay, let’s read the first and last sentence.
So, we already identified the topic, which is
the homeless people, so what about them?
What about the homeless people?

So, the main idea in this paragraph is

“Homeless people have many problems.”

It’s in the first sentence of the paragraph, so

always remember that most of the main
idea are found in the first sentence of the
paragraph.

Do you understand? Yes, ma’am.

Now, how to find the supporting details?

You can locate the supporting details
because these describe the main idea, they
make the main idea stronger and clearer.
They prove the value of the main idea. So,
the thing that you need to do, is to find the
statements that supports or prove the value
of main idea.

Supporting details:
 In winter, it’s hard to stay warm and
it gets too hot in summer.
 It’s also hard to keep things safe
without a home.
 Worst is the lack of privacy.
These are the supporting details because
these are the problems faced by the
homeless people.

At this juncture, we will have another “Lenny is an excellent student. She is

supporting details.
Very good, class. You were able to locate
the main idea and the supporting details in
this paragraph.

III. ABSTRACTION
Okay class, we are now done discussing.

Now, what is the difference between fact Fact is based on truth, observation or
and opinion, again? research. It already has been proven.
While opinion is a person’s view, belief
or perception of something.

Very good, why is it important that we It is important because it helps us to

distinguish fact from opinion statements? understand or determine if the
Any idea? statement is true, not just based on
one’s opinion.

Distinguishing fact and opinion are one way It is by determining the main idea and
of determining the relevance and its supporting details in the text and
truthfulness of ideas, but there is also paragraph.
another way, what is it?

Excellent! What is the importance of We can get the correct information and

is? We can avoid fake news.
We can know how accurate and
important an information is.
