REFLECTION ABOUT THE MOVIE “DRIVING MISS DAISY”

“The piano keys are black and white, but they sound like a million colors in your
mind”. Driving Miss Daisy is a movie about interaction of people coming from different
culture, and race. In this movie, Miss Daisy and Hoke, had clashed due to cultural
differences and misunderstandings, but through time, the limited societal perspective of
these two ended up adjusting to improve communication and understand one another.
In the near future, I will encounter similar situations just like in the movie, different
perspective and beliefs from what I have. Exploring cultural differences and similarities,
can help us communicate with other people coming from various culture more
effectively. Just like in the movie, there are traditions or values in which, Hoke treated
Miss Daisy as a VIP because he perceives it as a respectful act, but coming from a
different culture, Miss Daisy on the other hand felt embarrassed or insulted. In addition,
from what I have observed in the movie, one of the block or barrier to enhance
cross-/transcultural communication, is that in some culture, a hurried attitude could
offend others, they tend to appreciate more if they are informed ahead of time while in
some culture, they value an unhurried approach to communication. Indeed, it is
important as a nurse to learn, embrace, respect and explore the differences and
similarities in culture. Having knowledge and effective communication with patients
coming from various culture is critical to create healthy and therapeutic environment and
provide quality health care to patients.
