Grade 5 Q3 Week 2
Grade 5 Q3 Week 2
Discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity.
(S5FE-IIIc-3)
Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity;
2. Identify materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity;
3. Enumerate materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity;
4. Classify materials as conductors and insulators; and
5. Apply safety measures in handling conductors
Key Concepts
(Science 5, LM, pp. 136)
Conductor
Conductors are materials that allow electricity and heat to flow freely,
allowing electricity and heat to be transferred from the source through them.
Exercises / Activities
Setup B
* hot water and mug
Note: The parent/guardian will closely supervise the child while doing the
ativity.
What to do:
1. Cut a part of the aluminum foil into three strips about 10 cm long.
2. Fold or roll the strips until its diameter is similar to an electrical cord.
3. Tape one end of the first strip to the negative side of the battery.
4. Place the other end of the first strip around the light bulb.
1. Put hot water in a mug. Be careful when experimenting with hot water.
2. Place all the objects in the mug for setup B.
3. After one minute, drain the water in the mug and get the objects using a tong.
4. Touch each object and record your observations in a tabular form.
5. Put a (√) if the object becomes hot and (x) if not.

Guide questions:
1. A material is conductor if it allows heat and electricity to pass through them and
a material is insulators if it did not allow heat and electricity to pass through
them
Conductors Insulators
1. frying pan 1. bar soap
2. stainless knife 2. water tumbler
3. gold ring 3. basket
4. tin can 4. chair
5. can opener 5. table
Guide questions:
1. Conductors are materials that allow heat and electricity to pass through them while
insulators are materials that do not allow heat and electricity to pass through them.
Guide questions:
1. frying pan, metal fork, copper wire, spoon, safety pin, nail (answers may vary)
2. Conductors are materials that permits heat and electricity to be transferred to
it.
Guide Questions:
1. The materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity are the coin,
copper wire, metal spoon and paper clip.
This proves that metals or objects made of iron are good conductors.
2. The insulators among the materials are the comb, paper, pencil, eraser and
toothpick.
This proves that materials/objects not made of iron are not good conductors of
heat and electricity.
