Grade 5 Q3 Week 2

This document provides a weekly learning activity sheet for science students in 5th grade. It discusses good conductors and insulators of heat and electricity. The document defines conductors as materials that allow heat and electricity to flow freely. It identifies metals such as copper, aluminum, iron, gold and silver as good conductors. It also lists plastics, silk, glass, oil and rubber as insulators that do not allow heat or electricity to pass through. The document includes several hands-on activities for students to identify conductors and insulators, such as using a battery and light bulb circuit or testing how various materials heat up in hot water. It aims to discuss why some materials conduct heat and electricity well and classify materials as conduct

WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

Science 5, Quarter 3, Week 2

Why Some Materials are Good Conductors of Heat and Electricity

Name: ________________________________________ Section: _________________

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity.
(S5FE-IIIc-3)

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity;
2. Identify materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity;
3. Enumerate materials that are good conductors of heat and electricity;
4. Classify materials as conductors and insulators; and
5. Apply safety measures in handling conductors

Time Allotment: 1 Week

Key Concepts
(Science 5, LM, pp. 136)

Conductor

 Conductors are materials that allow electricity and heat to flow freely,
allowing electricity and heat to be transferred from the source through them.

Materials that are Good Conductors of Heat and Electricity

 Metals are good conductors of heat

and electricity. Copper and
aluminum are metals. The most
commonly used metals as heat
conductors are aluminum, silver,
iron and steel. Stainless steel is an
iron-based metal with chromium.
 Cooking pots and pans made of
metals cook faster because they
quickly allow heat transfer from the
flame to the
food being cooked.
Figure 1: Conductor
 Iron, gold, silver, brass, steel, copper, nickel, and water are also conductor of
heat and electricity.

Materials that are Nonconductors (Insulators) of Heat and Electricity

 Not all materials are good conductors

of heat and electricity. Materials that
are nonconductors or those that do
not allow heat and electricity to pass
through them are called insulators.
 Materials that are made of plastics,
silk, leather, glass, oil, and rubber are
insulators. Other examples are wood,
brick, cloth, tiles, and air.

Exercises / Activities

Activity 1 – Electricity and Heat

What you need:

Setup A
* small flashlight bulb or LED * aluminum foil
* self-adhesive tape * one 1.5V AA baterry

Setup B
* hot water and mug

For Both Setups

* coin * comb * pencil eraser
* paper * paper clip * toothpick
* metal spoon * tongs

Note: The parent/guardian will closely supervise the child while doing the
ativity.

What to do:

Note: Be careful when using scissors.

Setup A. Electricity Flow

1. Cut a part of the aluminum foil into three strips about 10 cm long.
2. Fold or roll the strips until its diameter is similar to an electrical cord.
3. Tape one end of the first strip to the negative side of the battery.
4. Place the other end of the first strip around the light bulb.

5. Tape one end of the second strip to the positive side of the battery and the
third strip around the light bulb.
6. Test your connection by bringing the free ends of the second and third strips
together. Adjust as necessary.
7. Once your circuit works, try testing the objects listed above (what you need) if
the bulb will light up by making one side of the object touch the free end of the
second strip and the other side, the free end of the third strip.
8. Be sure to disconnect the circuit between each trial for a few seconds, specially
if either the aluminum foil or battery begins to heat up.
9. Record your observation.

Setup B Electricity Flow

1. Put hot water in a mug. Be careful when experimenting with hot water.
2. Place all the objects in the mug for setup B.
3. After one minute, drain the water in the mug and get the objects using a tong.
4. Touch each object and record your observations in a tabular form.
5. Put a (√) if the object becomes hot and (x) if not.
