Circle Time

Name of Activity: Rainbow, Rainbow

Introductory Activity: Parent and child will read poem

twice

How to do: Parent will instruct child/children that a video will be played, and
they must listen and watch quietly at first. After the first viewing parent will ask
the child to name/list some things heard or seen in the video. Parent can jot down
what is said. A second viewing of the video will be done and at this point the
parent will stop at any point where a word the child/children said is mentioned
and have a discussion. In discussion ask child/children if they have ever seen a
rainbow and what feeling they had when they saw the rainbow. At this point show
the “real” picture of the rainbow (see resources). Also, have children count the
colours of the rainbow and use parts of their bodies to curve like the arched
rainbow.

and which two things play a big role in forming a rainbow (sunlight and

Guided Learning

Activity Title: Rainbow 7’s

Introductory Activity: Repeat the “Pretty Rainbow” poem

How to do: Parent will inform the child/children that they will repeat the poem
and for every colour mentioned in the poem they will put up one finger. At the
end of the poem they will keep fingers up. Parent will then touch each finger and
the child/children will count. They should stop at seven (7). At this point parent
should ask, “How many colours are in the rainbow?” Child should say, “Seven”.
Parent will then put their finger in the air and write 7, while saying “straight
across and down”, then invite the child to follow and repeat several times. Provide
a paper and write a large numeral 7 or show a picture at resources. Invite
child/children to trace with finger while repeating “straight across and down”.

Parent will then provide a work sheet for the child to circle all the numeral 7’s
and then trace the sentence below.

NB: Parent can create own worksheet if printing is not available.

Parent’s checklist:

Ensure that child/children:

i) Demonstrate one to one correspondence by putting up one finger for

a colour

ii) Count up to 7

iii) imitate the movements in air writing and tracing the numeral 7

In/Outdoor Play

Activity Title: Chasing Rainbow Bubbles

How to play: Get a bottle/bowl of water, add some soap (liquid or powder)

shake/stir vigorously. Take turns in blowing and chasing bubbles outside. For the

first bubble blown, ask the child/children to look closely on the bubble and ask

what they see. If the child/children do not say ‘rainbow’, do a little prompting

until they get the idea.

To make a bubble wand use any small wire found around the home. (E.g. below)

Parent checklist:

Involve child or children in making the mixture

Ensure that you and child/children have fun.

Guided Creative Activity

Activity Title: How to make a rainbow

How to play: Parent and child/children will view the following video and allow the
child to choose which experiment he/she would like to do (bearing in mind the
resources you have available). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIdE-pqYqbs

Parent’s checklist: Whichever activity is chosen to ensure that child/children

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNsFgiM2SNY

How to do: Parent can play the video with the audio or turn off the sound and
read the story to the child/children. Make sure to say the name of the author of
the book.

After listening and viewing story, child/children should be able to:

Repeat the name of the story
