DIRECTIONS: Read the following passages carefully and answer the questions
according to the information there in. Each question has four choices, A-D,
choose the best alternatives and blacken the letter of your choices on the separate
answer sheet provided.
PASSAGE I
1 There is a gnat, called anopheles, from the reek word for “ hurt full”. Many gnats have mouth
armed with stabbing and sucking styles. So this one. It stabs the skin and draws blood. There is
“anopheles” with dappled wings. It bites men. Only the females bites. She has eggs to nourish. She
takes human bloods once a day. She then flies to a shaded corner. For instance, having bitten some
in mate of a dwelling shaded from coolness in the tropics, she then settles in a dim corner of it to
digest the meal.
2 The so called “bite” happens like this. The gnat when she a lights on the skin tests the place with
her labellum. Then sliding her head against the skin she stabs by styles with danger points and saw-
like edges. Swaying her head as she uses her mouth parts, she works these through the skin. They go
through and among the blood vessels, and carry with them a tiny tube like a hollow needle, close
behind the stabbing style. It leads from a poison –gland. It injects a droplet of juice into the stabbed
wound. This makes the blood- vessels flush; they bring more blood to the stabbed spot. Also the
juice delays the clotting of the blood which might baulk the gnat of her full meal, by cutting short
the yield of blood from the special tools and a special zest for thoroughness. She sucks the blood by
a tube which leads straight to the stomach. Rich food it is, human blood….
3 Our dapple –wing gnat when she “bites” human quarry, and injects as always her droplet of juice
to make the blood flow better, may be healthy, or she may not. She may be injected with parasite of
malaria. In herself it seems to do little or no harm. She is what is called “carrier”. The parasites
warms especially in her poison –gland near the gnat‟s head. The droplet of juice which the infected
gnat injects swarms with the little spindle –shaped wriggling creatures, the sporozoites of
plasmodium, microscopic parasite of malaria. These enter the circulation of the “bitten” person
where the tiny blood –vessels have laid open by the bite. Thus they are let loose within the
circulating human blood. Then tragedy ensues. They lose no time. They attach and enter the red
cells. Inside the red cells the parasites which has entered it sits quite at first, a very minute amoeba –
like thing. Later it crawls about in the red cell, the living house it has seized and it is to ruin. It
gradually eats out the inside of the human red cell, and it grows.

When it has eaten out the whole of the red cell it splits up in to a family of young. The killed and
distended red cell bursts and let them loose. Released into the blood each of these young ones in its
turn attacks a red cell as its parent did, it enters, grows and eats the red cell‟s heart out, repeating the
old cycle.

PASSAGE II
The study of genetics is today so far advanced that we shall soon be able to produce a kind of
genetically perfect “superman”, using techniques known as “genetic engineering”. At first this may
seen as an alter native possibility, but when we consider it in detail, we find are many problems
involved.
A distinction is usually made between “negative” and “positive” genetic engineering. In a negative
engineering, we try to eliminate harmful genes to produce genetically normal people. The aim is of
course a desirable one; however, it does pose the problem of what a harmful gene is. Genes are not
really either “good” or “bad”. The gene which causes certain forms of anemia, for example, can also
protect against malaria. If we eliminate this gene, we may get rid anemia, but we increase the risk
of malaria.
In positive genetic engineering, we try to create better people by developing the so called “good”
genes. But although this form of genetic engineering will give us greater control … over mankind‟s
future, there are several reasons for caution. Firstly, there is the possibility of mistakes. While
accepting that geneticists are responsible people, we must also admit that things can go wrong, the
result being the kind of monster we read about in horror stories. Secondly, there is the problem of
deciding what makes a “better” person. We may feel, for example, that if negative engineering can
good thing. On the other hand, intelligence does not necessarily lead to happiness. Do we really
need to create people who are intelligent, but perhaps unhappy?
The basic question is whether or not we should interfere with human life. We can argue that much
human progress (particularly in medicine) involves interference with life. To some extent, this is
true, but we should not forget the terrible consequences genetic engineering can have. Consider for
example the possibilities of genetic warfare, in which our enemies try to harm us using the
techniques of genetic engineering.
