Suppose that a particle moves according to the law of motion s ( t ) =t 4−6 t 3 +4 t 2 +3 with t ≥ 0, where s
is in meters and t is in seconds. Use your knowledge of the relationship between position, velocity, and
acceleration to answer the following questions. Use exact values (not approximations) throughout.
a) Find the velocity of the particle at time t . What is the velocity at t=0 ?
For the first part I took the derivative of the given function of s ( t ) =t 4−6 t 3 +4 t 2 +3 to find the
velocity of v ( t )=4 t 3 −18t 2 +8 t and substitute 0 for t as v ( 0 )=4 ( 0 )3−18 ( 0 )2 +8 ( 0 ) , which
equals out to v ( 0 )=0.
b) Determine, using algebraic analysis, when the particle is moving in a positive direction, a
negative direction, and when it is at rest.
To find where the particle is increasing and decreasing factor and solve the equation for the
velocity by first pulling factoring out the 2 t and then factoring the remaining to get
1
v ( t )=2 t(2t−1)(t−4 ). After which set each part to 0 to get t=0 , , 4 which are when the
2
velocity equals zero. To find the areas where the particle is positive and negative you substitute
1
t in the equation for values that are slightly off from the zeros. I used the values , 1 ,and 5.

From these I got the answers of v( )= , v(1)=−6, and v ( 5 ) =90. In interval notation of

c) Find the total distance traveled by the particle in the first 6 seconds.
To find the distance traveled I took the distance between each of the zeros and the final value
wanted and plug them into the original equation and add them together. To ensure that all the
numbers are positive take the absolute value of each. The answers are as following s ( 0 )=3 ,
d) Find the acceleration of the particle at time t . What is the acceleration at t=0 ?
To find the acceleration of the particle at a given moment take the derivative of
v ( t )=4 t 3 −18t 2 +8 t which equals out to a ( t )=12 t 2−36 t+8 and substitute 0 for t . The
equation is as follows a ( 0 )=12 ( 0 )2−36 ( 0 ) +8 which equals out to a ( 0 )=8.
e) When is the particle speeding up and slowing down? Explain how you found your answers.
Assuming that speeding up is when the line moves in a positive direction as well as it is slowing
down when it is moving in a negative direction. To find when the particle is speeding up and
slowing down you must find when the acceleration is a ( t ) >0 and when the velocity is
v ( t )> 0, and reversely to find when it is moving in a downward direction or slowing down the
acceleration would be a ( t ) <0 and the velocity would be v ( t )< 0. To find the answers to these
find the zeros of both the velocity and acceleration factor each out and set to zero or use the
quadratic equation. The equations would come out to a ( t ) >2.75 and v ( t )> 4 for when the
1
particle is increasing and when the particle is decreasing would be at a ( t ) <0 .24 and v ( t )< . To
