The Virtual Cell Worksheet

The document provides descriptions and drawings of various cell organelles including the centriole, lysosomes, chloroplasts, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, cell membrane, nucleus, and Golgi body. For each organelle, it lists key functions and structural features. It instructs the reader to draw each organelle based on its description.

The Virtual Cell Worksheet

1. Centrioles are only found in ___animal_____ cells. They function in cell Centriole
____division______. They have _9_ groups of __3___ arrangement of the protein fibers.
Draw a picture of a centriole in the box.

2. Lysosomes are called _____suicide________ sacks. They are produced by the

__Golgi____ body. They consist of a single membrane surrounding powerful
____digestive_____ enzymes. Those lumpy brown structures are digestive
_____________. They help protect you by ___destroying______ the bacteria that Lysosomes
your white blood cells engulf. __Lysosomes___ act as a clean-up crew for the cell.
Zoom in and draw what you see.

3. Chloroplasts are the site of ____photosynthesis____. They consist of a __double__

membrane. The stacks of disk like structures are called the __grana___. The
membranes connecting them are the _thylakoid_____ membranes. Zoom in and
draw a picture. Chloroplasts

4. Mitochondrion is the ___powerhouse_____ of the cell. It is the site of

___respiration_____. It has a __double _____ membrane. The inner membrane is
where most __aerobic____ respiration occurs. The inner membranes is _ruffled__
with a very large surface area. These ruffles are called __cristae__. Mitochondria
have their own __DNA_ and manufacture some of their own ____protein___. Draw a Mitochondrion
picture of the mitochondrion with its membrane cut.

5. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a series of double membranes that __loop_ back

and forth between the cell membrane and the __nucleus__. These membranes fill the
___cytoplasm______ but you cannot see them because they are very
___transparent____. The rough E.R. has
___ribosomes_______ attached to it. This gives it its texture. These ribosomes Endoplasmic
manufacture
Reticulum (ER)
__proteins_______ for the cell. The ribosomes are the
___organelles_____ which manufacture proteins. Draw the rough ER with a
ribosome.

6. Smooth E.R. __lacks__ ribosomes. It acts as a ______pathway______ throughout

the cytoplasm. It runs from the cell membrane to the nuclear ___membranes____ and
Smooth ER
throughout the rest of the cell. It also produces ___lipids____ for the cell. Draw a
picture of the smooth ER.

7. Cell Membrane performs a number of critical functions for the __cell__. It regulates
all that __enters___ and leaves the cell; in multicellular organisms it allows _self__
recognition. Draw and shade the cell membrane.
Cell Membrane
8. Nucleus is called the ____headquarters_____ of the cell. It is a large __dark__ spot
in eukaryotic cells. It ___controls___ all cell activity. The nuclear membrane has
many
___pores____. The thick ropy strands are the _____chromatin___________. The
large solid spot is the ____nucleolus_______. The nucleolus is a spot of Nucleolus
___condensed____ chromatin. It manufactures ____ribosomes______. The
chromatin is ___DNA____ in its active form. It is a _____combination___________ of
DNA and histone proteins. It stores the information needed for the manufacture of
___proteins______. Draw a picture of the nucleus and its nucleolus.

Golgi Body
9. Golgi Body is responsible for packaging ____proteins______ for the cell. Once the proteins are
produced by the __rough____ E.R., they pass into the __sack___ like cisternae that are the main
part of the Golgi body. These proteins are then squeezed off into the little ____blebs___ which drift
off into the cytoplasm. Draw a picture of the Golgi Body as it is squeezing off the proteins.
