Unit 1 Chapter 1 Learning Guide July 2023

This document provides an overview and learning guide for a high school biology unit on science, body systems, homeostasis, and cell structure and function. It includes lessons, worksheets, and self-assessments for students to complete. The lessons cover what science is, the main human body systems and their functions, homeostasis and feedback loops, differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cell organelles and their roles, and how organelles work together in cells. Students are asked to define key terms, describe examples, and explain interrelationships between topics.

ATPH12 Unit 1 Chapter 1 Learning Guide

Chapter 1- Science, Body Systems Intro, Homeostasis, Cell Structure/Function

Lesson 1- What is Science? Perspectives and Questions.

Get Started:

In the space provided, write your own thoughts about what you think science is.

What is science to you? How is science different in How can I take an active role in
biology? my own scientific discoveries?

Biology is still learning about I have a interest in how things

the world but it has a focus on work. i like to know the iner
living things. mechanics of whats around me
and i think thats exactly what
To me science is the way we biology does.
learn about the world around
us and how it works.

Quote(s) about science that resonate with me the most:

“Science is about the pursuit and delving into the unknown.” Dr. Leroy Little Bear
“Science is curiosity in thoughtful action about the world and how it behaves.” NASA website

Reason(s) I like the above quote(s):

I resonated with these quotes because i think both of them talk about how science explores the
world around us and how it works, witch is what i like to do.

1
Work on It 1: Indigenous and Western Sciences: Blending Perspectives

Once you have reviewed one or more of the lesson resources, answer these reflection questions:

Which resource did you choose?

What stands out to you in this example of science?

How are Indigenous and Western Science highlighted?

How are the two sciences “braided” together?

Work on It 2: Science Curricular Competencies - inquiry, methods and skills

Complete the following self-assessment to review the skills of science and to summarize which ones
you have the most experience with and which you will develop through this course.
Scientific Skills My own experience with these skills

Lots of Some Little

experience experience Experience

Questioning and predicting

Planning and conducting

Processing and analyzing data and information

Evaluating

Applying and innovating

Communicating

What are some ways which you have developed these skills in the past? Give a few specific
examples (can be from science or other fields of knowledge).

2
Lesson 2: Human Body Systems

Work On It Our body systems are interconnected.

Using the chart provided in the lesson, write the function(s) of each system.

Body System Function(s)

Digestive System

Excretory or Urinary System

Respiratory System

Circulatory System

Lymphatic System

Nervous System

Endocrine System

Reproductive System

3
Choose any two of the 8 body systems from the previous page. Rewrite the functions and list the
Major Organs/parts in each system. Then describe how the systems are interconnected.
Functions and Organs of Body System 1 Functions and Organs of Body System 2

How do these two systems interconnect or work together?

STOP and submit the completed Lessons 1 and 2 pages to Assignment folder “(RA) Unit 1
Chapter 1 Lessons 1/2 Learning Guide” as a single PDF file. (Instructions for how to do this can
be found in the Lesson 2 Show It Section). Once marked, you will have access to the rest of the
chapter. You can find the Assignment folder in your Content page or the Assignments tab in your

4
top navigation bar. Once you have received feedback on your Learning Guide, you will automatically
be given access to the rest of the chapter lessons.
Lesson 3: Homeostasis

Get Started

What is homeostasis? Write your own definition below and list some examples of how our body
must adjust to maintain or return to homeostasis.

Work on It 1: Negative Feedback Loops

1. Write your own definition of what a negative feedback loop is.

2. Draw or write one of the examples of a negative feedback loop outlined in the lesson.
(thermoregulation or fat intake) Be sure to include the terms Imbalance, Body Reacts,
Correction, Negative Feedback and Homeostasis.

3. What is the main advantage to having negative feedback loops in our body? What do you
think would happen if we didn’t have them?

5
Lesson 4: Cell Structure and Organelles

Get Started

One thing I noticed or learned from the short animated video on cells was….

Work on It 1: Cell types and Organelles

Read the text in this section of the lesson and watch the video on cells. As you go, fill in the
differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells in the table below. Then fill in a function for
each organelle mentioned on the next page.

1. Difference between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells

Prokaryotic Cells have... Eukaryotic cells have...

Both Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells have…

6
2. Give a short description of the function of each organelle or material listed below.

Organelle Description and function

Cell membrane

Nucleus

DNA

Chromatin and
Chromosomes

nucleolus

ribosomes

cytoplasm

Endoplasmic Reticulum

vesicles

Golgi Body/Apparatus

vacuoles

lysosomes

mitochondria

Lesson 5: Cell Organelle Cooperation

In point form, explain how the organelles listed are interrelated to complete a cell function.

1. Organelles work together to create protein. Organelles involved: nucleus, ribosomes,

nuclear membrane, rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), Golgi apparatus, vesicles

2. Organelles work together to transport materials in and out of the cell. Organelles involved:
Golgi Apparatus, vesicles, cell membrane

3. Organelles work together to create and use energy in the cell. Organelles: mitochondria,
cytoplasm. Other terms: ATP synthesis, glucose/carbohydrate, oxygen, carbon dioxide

You have completed your first Learning Guide. There is no requirement to hand in lessons 3-5.
You can now complete the Unit 1 Chapter 1 Quiz, using this Learning Guide as a resource. If you
have submitted the first two lessons of this Learning Guide and it is marked, the Quiz can be found
in your Content or Quizzes tab in your course top navigation bar. While writing this quiz, you
will also be practicing using our supervision software (Integrity Advocate), that is

9
required for the Unit 2 and 4 Tests. If you have any troubles with it, please call their 24/7
help at 1-888-395-1025.
