UCC103: INTRODUCTION TO QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES
DATE: AUGUST, 2021 TIME: 24 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answers ALL Questions.
2. Submit your answers in word format unless otherwise instructed. Type your
answers in a word document. Do not PDF your document.
3. Submit your answers via the Exam Portal platform.
4. For images (photographs, graphs and calculations etc ), use legible writing. Take an
image (Photo) of all the answer sheets and submit via the Exam Portal platform.
Remember to number the answer sheet pages.

NOTE: No submissions will be accepted in any other mode e.g. emails,


WhatsApp etc.

5. The examinations start at 8.00am and all the answer scripts MUST be posted on the
portal by 8.00am the following day (within 24 hours).
6. Submit your answer sheets as one document. Click the “SUBMIT” button to ensure
that your answer sheet is uploaded in the portal.
7. Allow yourself enough time to confirm that your submission has gone through. You
will receive an automated email receipt on successful submission.

NOTE: Submission deadlines must be observed.

8. On the front page of each answer script you are required to observe the following
instructions:
 Write your student number in full
 Write the unit code and title
 Write the date of examination
 Write “SUPPLEMENTARY” or “DEFFERED EXAM” as the case may be, (if
you are taking a supplementary or deferred examination).
 Write the name of the lecturer

QUESTION ONE
a) Calculus is that branch of mathematics around which most business calculations revolve.
Outline the use and importance of calculus in the manufacturing industry. (5 marks)
b) Africa Online Safaris has organized an excursion cum tour of selected countries in Africa.
The bookings are to be done from the company’s offices in London. The marketing
manager designed a form in which the potential tourists were required to indicate in order
of preference the countries they would like to visit. Sifting through the applications, the
manager noted the following:
All the applicants chose at least one of the three countries Egypt, Ghana and South Africa.
A total of 2417 applicants chose Egypt as their favorite destination; 3500 applicants chose
Ghana or South Africa as their favored destination. Of those that chose Egypt, 1233 also
chose Ghana. 1031 applicants chose Ghana and South Africa, while 2014 chose Egypt or
South Africa but not Ghana. Only 565 applicants indicated their preference for Egypt and
Ghana but not South Africa. If 1803 did not indicate Egypt as their preferred destination,
obtain the following:
i. The total number of applicants assessed. (5 marks)
ii. The number of applicants who chose each of the three destinations only.
(3 marks)
iii. The most popular of the three destinations. (2 marks)

QUESTION TWO (15 MARKS)


a) In the course of conducting a break-even analysis for a company in the manufacturing
sector, you find that there are two break-even points. Explain the implication of this
finding to the company management. (5 marks)
b) ABC Entertainment PLC is considering setting up a branch in Kenya. To test the market,
the company plans to organize a concert in Nairobi. The proceeds of this concert will all
go to charity, but will also be used to give an indication to the shareholders if Kenya is a
viable option. The promoters of the concert have given the following breakdown:
The estimated fixed cost for the concert is pegged at Ksh 600,000/-. This includes fees to
be paid to the performers, hire of venue, licenses and other administrative costs. The
variable costs consist of the cost of a give-away for each ticket sold as promotional
material. Each give-away costs Ksh 500/-. The firm has proposed a price tag for the ticket
at Ksh 1,500/-.
Required:
i. Calculate the number of tickets that must be sold for the company to recover their
costs. (4 marks)
ii. If the company promised to donate at least Ksh 400.000/-, how many tickets must
it sell to realize this promise? (4 marks)
iii. If 1350 tickets were sold, would the company have made a profit? (2 marks)
