DYNAMICS

(Grade V)
Objectives:

 Distinguished among the different dynamic markings such as pianissimo (pp), piano (p),
messopiano (mp), messoforte (mf), forte (f), fortissimo (ff).
 Compared different levels and changes of music
 Valued the essence of knowing the different dynamics of music.

Content Standard:
 demonstrates understanding of concepts pertaining to volume in music
 applies dynamics to musical selections

Learning Competency: Code:

 uses appropriate musical terminology
to indicate variations in dynamics,  MU5DY-IVa-b-1
specifically:
o piano (p)  MU5DY-IVa-b-2
o mezzo piano (mp)
o forte(f)

PROCEDURES/LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Lesson Proper

Dynamics refers to the softness and loudness of the sound. The term is also applied to
the written or printed musical notation used to indicate dynamics. Dynamics are relative and
do not refer to specific volume levels.

The main dynamic levels are:

 p or piano, which means “soft”

 f or forte, which means “loud”

More subtle degrees of loudness or softness are indicated by:

 mp, standing for mezzo-piano, which means “moderately soft”

 mf, standing for mezzo-forte, which means “moderately loud”

Beyond f and p, there are also:

 pp, which stands for pianissimo and means “very soft”
 ff, which stands for fortissimo and means “very loud”

Dynamic Changes

To gradually change the dynamics, composers use crescendo and diminuendo  (also decrescendo).

 crescendo (cresc.): gradually play louder

 diminuendo / decrescendo  (dim. or decres.): gradually play softer

Activity: (Assign students to answer the worksheet individually.)

Listen to the following sounds produced by the pictures below. Put f (forte) if the object
produces a loud sound and p (piano) if it produces a soft sound.
Analysis:
Students will be given instructions and an enough time to think of and provide a specific
situation. Afterwards, students will then be able to identify whether the given situation belongs to
crescendo or decrescendo.
Example: Genesis has switched on the radio, but her mother is unable to hear it, so she has
instructed him to increase the level of its volume. (crescendo)

Application:
Task 1.
Students will be given a task about “The Raindrop”. They will perform it by tapping their desk
every time they will be asked about the sound of a “raindrop” while stamping their feet for the sound
of a “heavy rain” and moderately going faster or softer clapping of their hands incorporating a
raindrop moderately going to a heavy rain and the latter.
Assessment:
Compare different levels and changes (loudness and softness) of music using 1 example
of situation in each dynamic marking.
Evaluation:
(Matching Type)

Guidelines:
In making your scrapbook you need to include the following:
a. Cover Page (Title of the Activity, Name, Grade and Section)
b. Definition of Dyamic Markings and its different levels
c. Object/Things/Animals that produces Soft Sound
d. Object/Things/Animals that produces Loud Sound
e. Real life situations in relation to the 4 remaining dynamic markings of music.
Example: Genesis has switched on the radio, but her mother is unable to hear it, so she
has instructed him to increase the level. (Crescendo)
a. mezzo piano (mp)
b. mezzo forte (mf)
c. crescendo <
d. decrescendo >
f. The deadline of the submission of your scrapbook is 3 days before your quarterly exam.

Activity/Project:
SCRAPBOOK
The students will look for an image of an object, a thing or an animal that produces a soft
and loud sound. They will then paste it in their scrapbook showing their understanding on what is the
difference between the dynamic marking; forte and piano. After which they will give one situation for
each remaining dynamic marking which are the;
o mezzo piano (mp)
o mezzo forte (mf)
o crescendo <
o decrescendo >
Rubric:
The following are your guide in making your scrapbook project.
Criteria 5 4 3 2 1
Extremely well organized: logical format: organization
enhanced project and was very effective.
Word processed or neatly written, clean and neatly
bound in a cover.
Very clever and presented with originality, a unique
approach, truly enhanced the project.
The dynamic markings were clearly included and
arranged according to their designated symbols.
