Week 2 3 CE 315 Numericals ModuleA

This document provides an overview of the numerical solution to civil engineering problems module. It includes 1) a review of mathematical foundations like matrices and vectors, 2) learning outcomes around identifying appropriate numerical tools for solving CE problems, and 3) teaching materials on matrix algebra and examples of adding and subtracting matrices. The module will be delivered online or remotely and assessed through math-focused assignments solving problems like matrix addition, subtraction, and simplification.

ISU MODULE

Subject: CE 315 NUMERICAL SOLUTION TO CE PROBLEMS

1. Title of the Module

Chapter 1:
1. Review of the Mathematical Foundation

2. Introduction/Overview

Foundations of mathematics is the study of the philosophical and logical and/or

algorithmic basis of mathematics, or, in a broader sense, the mathematical investigation of
what underlies the philosophical theories concerning the nature of mathematics. In this
latter sense, the distinction between foundations of mathematics and philosophy of
mathematics turns out to be quite vague. Foundations of mathematics can be conceived as
the study of the basic mathematical concepts (set, function, geometrical figure, number,
etc.) and how they form hierarchies of more complex structures and concepts, especially the
fundamentally important structures that form the language of mathematics (formulas,
theories and their models giving a meaning to formulas, definitions, proofs, algorithms, etc.)
also called metamathematical concepts, with an eye to the philosophical aspects and the
unity of mathematics. The search for foundations of mathematics is a central question of the
philosophy of mathematics; the abstract nature of mathematical objects presents special
philosophical challenges.

3.Learning Outcome/ Objective

The following are the learning outcome:

a. Identify appropriate numerical/mathematical tool or concepts suitable for the solution of

the CE problem;
b. Analyze the CE problem to translate it to a numerical solution
c. Use a computer software developing a solution to the problem;
d. Solve engineering problems numerically when their analytical solution is either not
available or difficult to obtain.

4. Learning Content
Chapter 1 :
1. Review of the Mathematical Foundation
2. Definition of Matrix and vectors; Matrix Algebra-Summation, Subtraction
MATRIX

Vector – physical value with both magnitude and direction

Scalar – physical value with magnitude but no direction

THE ALGEBRA OF MATRICES

Where: A = matrix m = number of rows

aij = element of the matrix n = number of columNS
mxn = size of the matrix
EQUALITY OF MATRICES
Two matrices A and B are equal iff their corresponding elements are equal
Given:

ADDITION OF MATRICES
Two matrices A & B can be added iff their size are equal that is

Addition of matrices of different sizes is undefined

ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF MATRIX

Rules on Adding and Subtracting Matrices with the Same Size or Dimension
Suppose matrices A and B both have two rows and two columns (2×2) with some arbitrary
elements or entries…

The “formulas” to add and subtract matrices are shown below…

 Add matrices by adding their corresponding entries

 Subtract matrices by subtracting their corresponding entries

Let’s work on some problems.

Example 1: Perform the indicated operation for A + C.

Notice that matrices A and C have the same “size” or “dimension” because their number of
rows and column are the same. Both can be described as a 3 x 3 matrix. This tells me that
it is okay to find their sum.
I will add their corresponding entries and simplify.

That’s how simple it is!

Example 2: Perform the indicated operation for ( A + C ) + ( C − A ).

If you consider the expression ( A + C ) + ( C − A ) as combining like or similar terms type

problem, then it makes sense that we can quickly simplify the original problem without even dealing
with the addition and subtraction of matrices.
Notice that I can combined the C-terms as 2C.

Now, the A-terms should cancel out because they have opposite signs.
Our original problem is reduced to 2C which is twice or double of matrix C.
This means that I am going to multiply each entry of matrix C by 2. This is actually the subject of
my other algebra tutorial on Scalar Multiplication of Matrix.

Since

then 2C is solved by…

5. Teaching and Learning Activities

Exercises. Addition of two matrices (sum of matrices) and the subtraction of two matrices
(difference of matrices).

Given two matrices A and B:

6 16 -12
A= 1 -10 -19
10 -8 -17

6 18 0
B= 14 7 16
-7 -15 -9
Find the value of the matrix: C = A + B
