Base Plate Design - Concrete Beam Theory

This document provides design data and calculations for a pedestal base plate with an axial load of 363 kN, horizontal force of 88 kN, and moment of 366 kN-m. The calculations determine the base plate should be 1050 mm x 600 mm x 25 mm thick with 4 anchor bolts on each side that are 32 mm diameter and 1300 mm long. The design is based on concrete beam theory since the eccentricity to length ratio is greater than 1/3. Stresses are checked to be below permissible limits.

DESIGN CALCULATIONS :

To get the size of base plate :

eccentricity, e = M = 366.00 = 1008.26 mm

P 363.00

Assuming the projection of the base plate on each side of = 150 mm

the flange of column

Length of base plate , L = (150 + 750 + 150) = 1050 mm

e = 1008.26 = 0.960 > 1/3

L 750.00

Since e/L > 1/3, the design will be done on the basis of Concrete Beam Theory
According to concrete beam theory, the depth of Neutral axis is given by,
n = d
σ tf + 1
m×σc

Increasing the stresses in order to account the wind effect,

σ tf = (1.25 x 192) = 240 N/mm2
σc = (1.33 x 6) = 7.98 N/mm2
Pitch distance of the bolt, Pd = 2.50 × ⌀ = 80 mm
Edge distance of the bolt, ed = 1.50 × ⌀ = 48 mm
Say, e d = 50 mm

Hence, d = ( 1050 - 50 ) = 1000 mm

n = 1000
240 + 1
(10.98 x 7.98)
n = 267.44 mm

Lever arm = d - n = (1000 - 267.44) = 910.85 mm

3 3

Taking the moment about the line of action of tensile force,

C × 910.85 = ( 366 × 1000 ) + 363 ( 1050 / 2 ) - 50
Hence, C = 591.12 kN

Breadth of Base Plate,

B= 2×C = ( 2 × 598.23 × 1000 ) = 553.95 mm
n×σc ( 267.44 × 7.98 )
Say, = 600 mm

Hence the maximum value of compressive stress will be = 7.98 x 553.95

600
= 7.37 N/mm2

Providing the Stiffners plates to stiffen the base of column,

considering the width of stiffner from face of column to be = 75 mm

Stress cordinate at the critical section = 7.37 × 75

267.44
= 2.066 N/mm2
Bending Moment at critical section :
= 2.091 × 75 × 75 + 7.46 - 2.091 × 75 ( × ⅔ × 75 )
2 2
= 5810.89 + 2.65 × 3750
= 15751 N mm

Moment of resistance = 1 × 1 × t2 × σ bs
6
15941 = 1 × 1 × t2 × 259
6
Hence, t = 19.10 mm
Say, t = 25 mm
Therefore provide 1050 × 600 × 25 mm Base Plate.

Anchor bolts :
Tension in wind ward bolts, P1 = ( C - P ) + Px
= ( 598.23 - 363 ) + 88
= 323.23 kN

Net area of bolts required, A = 323.23 x 1000

1.25 x 192
A = 1346.792 mm2

No. of bolts = A = 1346.792

0.78 × a 627
= 2.15 Nos
Hence provide = 4 Nos
Therefore, provide 4 nos. of 32 dia. Bolts on the Tension side.
Also same dia. & same No. of bolts on the other side.

Length of each bolt = P1

No. of bolts × π × ⌀ × bond stress

= 323.23 × 1000
4 × π × 32 × 0.70

= 1148 mm
Say, = 1300 mm
Hence, provide 1300 mm anchor length.
