The Windows operating system is designed and developed by Microsoft Corporation, an


American multinational technology corporation, which is also the biggest and most valuable
company around the globe. On 4 April 1975, Microsoft Corporation was founded by Bill
Gates and his childhood friend, Paul Allen, who is a programmer in Boston [ CITATION Jon16 \l
1033 ]. The name, Microsoft is originated from the word microcomputer and software, which
represent the products of their company[ CITATION His15 \l 1033 ]. On the year of 1980,
Microsoft developed their first operating system, Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-
DOS), which is designed for International Machines Corporation (IBM) to run their personal
computer, the IBM PC. Then, Microsoft deepened their position by introducing their own
operating system in 1985, Windows OS, a graphical user interface operating system. After
Windows OS is released, Microsoft gained wide following throughout the years and its
following versions even achieved a selling rate of 1 million copies per month, and nearly
90% of the computers around the world ran on Windows OS [ CITATION Gre20 \l 1033 ].
Furthermore, Microsoft is also engaged in developing, licensing, and supporting their
productivity software, such as word processing and spreadsheet programs, and a range of
services are provided to meet their customers’ needs[ CITATION Jon16 \l 1033 ].

On the other hand, the operating system is called Windows because it contains various
windows with different type of functions. Moreover, Microsoft constantly introduced new
versions of Windows OS with new features for their users, one of the recent versions is
Windows 10, which is a multitasking operating system with graphical user interface that
released on 29 July 2015 as a follow-up to Windows 8 [ CITATION Van181 \l 1033 ] . Meanwhile,
they also provide different types of Windows 10, such as Home, Pro and Enterprise to
support a broad range of devices. For example, PCs, tablets, smartphones, Microsoft
HoloLens, Xbox One and Surface Hub[ CITATION Ton15 \l 1033 ]. All of them came with the
version of 32-bit and 64-bit, which allows the users to choose according to their hardware
setup and requirements. Additionally, Microsoft allows their users to adopt Windows 10 by
upgrading directly from Windows 7 or 8. It is very user-friendly and efficient because the
users able to transfer the applications and software directly from the previous version, as well
as their settings and preferences by just running the Windows 10 OS installer. Then,
Windows 10 can be upgraded manually through the Windows Update Assistant [ CITATION
Ste20 \l 1033 ].
Main idea and key features
Microsoft received feedbacks on Windows 8, which is the previous Windows version, it
turned out to be confusing and too complicated to use. Therefore, Microsoft decided to
change the Windows 10 user interface to be more user-friendly like the older versions, while
adding a lot of new features and improvements. For example:

A table of contents which contains all the apps, folders, and contacts.

 All applications are shown according to their alphabetical order.
 Right column
 Every application which added as tile is shown.
 If the application is set as “live tile”, it will display changing real time information,
such as weather or stock quotes.
 Search bar
 Can search for online information directly besides programs and files in the device.
Cortana
Microsoft’s voice controlled virtual assistant.
 User can ask questions or assigning tasks by just using the computer’s microphone.
 For example:
 Searching for files from a specific date.
 Sending an email while doing research.
 Add a reminder as a notification on an event.
Microsoft Edge
New Windows default browser, a replacement of Internet Explorer.

Additional features:
 Collections
 Comparing to Bookmarks, Collections allows the user to store the snippets of text and
images from the website itself, but not just keep tracking on the website links.
 Important information is stored efficiently and more organized.
 Notes can be added in the Collections by clicking the sticky note icon on the top of
the panel.
 My Feed
 A selection of news stories, snippets of information, videos and article and shown
according to the users’ interests.
 Topics are filtered based on users’ browsing history, interactions between Cortana,
and their personal data, such as location.
