WASHING MACHINE
Background Information for Learners
Washing Machine is a domestic appliance that washes clothes with the aid of water
and detergent. It is also called laundry machine, clothes washer, or washer that
includes immersing dipping, rubbing, or scrubbing of clothes in water. This machine
is power- driven with an AC motor connected to the power source (220V/60Hz) so
that the electrical energy can be connected into mechanical energy in order to facilitate
an act of washing, rinsing and spinning. The simplest washing machine just agitates
clothes in water with detergent, where some include wash and spin timers for
automatic operations. Automatic machines or those electronically controlled may fill,
empty, wash, spin and heat in a cycle. The usual domestic washing machine can be
considered automatic because of the mechanical timer used. Electronically - controlled
are those machines that utilize electronic circuit for switching and program of the
operation depending on the features.
When performing electronic servicing, it is a must to prepare first the necessary tools,
materials, electronic components, and equipment needed, as well as the information. The
following list of tools, materials, and equipment are needed in maintaining and repairing a
washing machine:

Activity 1expected answers
1. It is suitable for electronic work because if we exceed its maximum temperature, it can
cause the printed circuit board to break and result to damage of components.
2. It is the best because it is flexible in observing all sides of the circuit guided by bright light.
3. It is best to use the right size of the Philips screwdriver because this will prevent the screw
from loosen its thread.
4. It is best to use the right size of drill bit in boring holes because undersized drilled holes
will need to be drilled again (This will prolong the work activity) while oversized holes
will cause a wastage in the material.
5. Soldering stand keeps the soldering iron from flammable materials and protects the user
from accidentally touching the hot portion of the soldering iron.

Reassembling Procedure:
1. After replacing the defective component of the appliance, prepare the parts
for reassembling. Make sure that there are no missing parts, to include the screw/s.
2. Fix all the disassembled parts in the housing/compartment, considering the fittings/locks.
3. Wires and loose parts should be in proper place to avoid damaged due to misaligned
compartment.
4. All sides of the housing should fit accordingly. Moving parts must move as it can be moved
by hand and free from obstructions.
5. Tighten screw/s accordingly.
6. Clean the unit before doing the post-testing procedure.
Post-testing Procedure:
1. Test the resistance at the AC plug to determine the continuity of the power line to the AC
motor. A resistance reading must be observed as you turn the timer switch to ON position. This
indicates that the circuit connection is good.
2. In the case of electronically controlled washing machine, there is no resistance reading as
you test the AC plug. The reason is that there is a low-voltage power supply circuit that
controls the functions of the appliance.
3. Energize the unit to check its functionality. Plug the AC cord to the power source (the
timer switch is at OFF position and power ON button for electronically controlled must be OFF,
too). Turn the timer switch accordingly and observe if the unit functions the way it should
operate. In the case of electronically controlled, press button one at a time, observing the

behavior. This time, the unit should operate normally. If not, review the

Electric Fan is an air moving machine used to cool with an AC Motor connected to the
power source which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy in order to generate a
moving air. An electrical current reaches the motor and then enters coils of wire that are
wrapped around a metal base. As these current passes through the wire, a magnetic field is
caused that expends force in a clockwise motion that actually changes the electric energy into
mechanical energy. This action causes the motor coils to spin. As the coils are spinning, the fan
captures this spinning motion, transferring it to the fan blades. The slicing of the air caused by
the fan blades is what pushes the air downward, causing the breeze created by the ceiling fan.
The air velocity/delivery of the electric fan is controlled by a mechanical speed selector
switch for old models and electronically controlled speed selector switch for new models. Timer
is also included for fully automatic operations.

Post-testing Procedure:
1. Test the resistance at the AC plug to determine the continuity of the power line to the AC
motor. A resistance reading must be observed as you switch ON the electric fan. This indicates
that the circuit connection is good.
2. In the case of electronically controlled electric fan, there is no resistance reading as you test
the AC plug. The reason is that there is a low-voltage power supply circuit that controls the
functions of the appliance.
3. Energize the unit to check its functionality. Plug the AC cord to the power source. Observe
if the unit functions the way it should operate. This time, the unit should operate normally. If
not, review the documentation and the problem for the second time.

Activity 1
Directions: Given the necessary tools and equipment you should be able to reassemble the
repaired appliance and test its functionality. You will be assessed using the listed criteria with
ratings 1-3, 3 being the highest. Each criterion has its indicator and corresponding point to
guide you to assess yourself. Multiply the score by the corresponding percentage and divide it
by 3, then multiply the result by 100. Add the products to get the rating.
Procedure:
1. Refer to the documentation to check if the problem/ complaint was addressed.
2. Perform the post-testing procedure. The unit/ appliance must operate in its normal operating
condition.
3. Twenty minutes will be given for you to perform the activity.

Here is the procedure in mounting and soldering components on printed circuit board.
1. Carefully check the ready-made PCB against the diagram and inspect for any
microscopic shorts or open paths. Do the remedial steps, if necessary.
2. Insert the two 33K, ¼-watt resistors as indicated in the diagram.
3. Insert the two electrolytic capacitors in the PCB as shown in the diagram. Take note of their
polarity orientation.
4. Mount the two NPN transistors in the PCB taking into consideration the proper orientation
of their electrodes (emitter, base, and collector).
5. Mount the two jumbo LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) to the place intended for in the PCB.
6. Remove the insulation of a 4-inch #22 black stranded hook-up wire with at least 1/8 of an
inch on both ends. Insert the uninsulated part at one end for the negative supply.
7. Do the same as in step no. 6 using red hook-up wire for the positive supply.
8. Let your work be checked by your teacher before making any soldering job.
a. Solder the connections of your work following the procedure of proper soldering technique.
At some stage, you will probably need to desolder a joint to remove or re-position a wire
or component. The easiest and most common way is the use of desoldering pump.
Here is the procedure in removing components in PCB using a desoldering pump (solder
sucker)
1. Set the pump by pushing the spring-loaded plunger down until it locks.
2. Apply both the pump nozzle and the tip of your soldering iron to the joint.
3. Wait for a second or two for the solder to melt.
4. Then, press the button on the pump to release the plunger and suck the molten solder into
the tool.
57
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times.
5. Repeat, if necessary, to remove as much solder as possible.
6. The pump will need emptying occasionally by unscrewing the nozzle. After removing most
of the solder from the joint(s), you may be able to remove the wire or component lead
straight away (Allow a few seconds for it to cool). If the joint does not come apart easily,
apply your soldering iron to melt the remaining traces of solder at the same time as
pulling the joint apart, taking care to avoid burning yourself. Be careful in desoldering to
be sure that no component is damaged during the process.
