Solkor RF: Reyrolle

The document summarizes the Solkor Rf pilot wire differential relay. Key points: 1) The Solkor Rf uses full-wave current balance protection for transformer feeder circuits with metallic pilots. 2) It has a simple, robust design suitable for dedicated pilot wires with 5kV insulation as standard. 3) Connection involves two pilot cores to carry summed 3-phase current information using summation transformers and biasing.

Calculation of Induced Volts in Pilot Conductors (OHL Systems)

Earth wire

C S

Pilot circuit

• Earth fault current returns through:

– Earth mass, earth wire (if applicable), pilot cable sheath (if applicable)

• Induced Volts per km = 0.145 Ie log10 D/S

– Ie = single phase/earth fault current
– D = equivalent depth of earth return (typically 450 - 900m)
– S = Distance between pilots and phase conductors(m)

• Reduction factor will apply for the proportion of current carried by earth wires or pilot cable sheath.

3-Phase Power Cable Ie Coupling
flux Earth mass

• e = 2πf MILK

Earth fault current returns through:

– Power cable sheath/armour (screening factor typically
0.1)
– Pilot cable sheath/armour (screening factor typically
0.5)
– Earth mass

REYROLLE
Estimation of Voltage Induced in Pilot Conductors (Cable systems)

• e = 2πf MILK

– Where:
• e = Longitudinal voltage
• M = Coupling between power circuit and pilots
• I = Zero sequence current
• L = Length of common path
• K = Screening factor

• Typically 0.0045 to 0.12 V/A/km

– Lower values apply to aluminium sheathed cables
– Higher values apply to lead sheathed cables

• 5kV insulated relays and pilots are generally applicable to 11kV cable systems. Short cables and low
fault currents may allow use on higher voltage systems.

• 15kV insulated relays and pilots are generally applicable to higher voltage cable systems.

PILOT CIRCUIT

Specification for pilot cables for use with Solkor RF is ;-

Pilot loop resistance < 2000 Ohms
Inter-core capacitance < 0.8 microfarad.

Application of 5kV or 15kV insulated systems is based on the calculation for induced longitudinal
volts:
0.06 - 0.12V / Amp / Km for Steel armoured cables, and
0.03 - 0.06V / Amp / Km for Aluminium armoured cables of 400 sq. mm.

Solkor burden approx. 3VA.
CT magnetising currents at each line ends must not differ by more than I/20 Amperes for output
voltages < 50V.
