K.T.U. Department of Civil Engineering Strength of Materials I

This document contains 9 questions regarding the analysis of stresses in various structural elements. The questions cover a range of stress-related topics including determining stresses and loads in trusses and beams, calculating normal and shear stresses in different orientations, constructing Mohr's circles to find principal stresses and maximum shear stresses, and analyzing states of stress at points. Diagrams are provided with the questions to illustrate the structural elements, forces, and stress conditions described.

HW #2 DEPARTMENT of CIVIL ENGINEERING

STRENGTH of MATERIALS I

1 The bars of the truss each have a cross-

sectional area of 12.5 cm2. If the maximum
average normal stress in any bar is not to
exceed 20 MPa, determine the maximum
magnitude P of the loads that can be applied to
the truss.

2 The block is subjected to a compressive force

of 2 kN. Determine the average normal and
average shear stress developed in the wood
fibers that are oriented along section a–a at
30° with the axis of the block.

3 The wood specimen is subjected to the pull of

10 kN in a tension testing machine. If the allowable normal
stress for the wood is  t allow  12 MPa and the allowable
shear stress is  allow  1.2MPa , determine the required
dimensions b and t so that the specimen reaches these stresses
simultaneously. The specimen has a width of 25 mm.

4 The square steel plate has a thickness of 10 mm and is subjected to the edge
loading shown.
a) Determine average normal stress and in-plane shear stress of the
given figure.
b) Show state of stress on an element and draw in a Mohr cicle.
c) Determine the maximum
in-plane shear stress and the
average normal stress developed in
the steel.
d) Determine the equivalent
state of stress for an element
oriented 60° clockwise from the
horizontal.
5 Stresses at a point for two different directions are given as in the
figure. If  0  100MPa ,

a) Find state of stress at that point and show on an element.

b) Find  AC
c) Find normal and shear stresses at a direction oriented
60o in the CW direction.
d) Find principal stresses and directions
e) Find maximum shear stresses in plane and directions.
f) Show all stresses and directions found at a-d part on a
Mohr’s circle

6
Determine the equivalent state of stress on an element at the
same point which represents (a) the principal stress, (b) the
maximum in-plane shear stress and the associated average
normal stress and (c) the coordinate system x’y’ which is
obtained turning xy coordinate system 50o in the CCW
direction. Also, for each case, determine the corresponding
orientation of the element with respect to the element shown.
Sketch the results on each element.

7 The triaxial state of stress around a point of a

structural element is given as in the element in
the figure.
a) Construct the stress tensor (matrix) around
this point.
b) Find normal and shear stress at a direction
given by nx  0.5 and ny  0.8 .

c) Find principal stresses and their directions

d) Find maximum shear stress

8 6 State of stress at a point is given in the figure. It is

z known that maximum principal stress at the point
is 1  180MPa ,
3
a) Find  0
8 b) Find all principal stresses and principal
directions.
2 c) Find maximum shear stress
3 y d) Draw Mohr’s circle for the state of stress

x
9 BONUS QUESTION

Normal stresses at a point for three different directions are given as in the figure.
a) Find state of stress at that point
b) Find unknown shear stresses at a-a, b-b and c-c directions.
c) Draw the Mohr circle and show the points on the Mohr circle corresponding to
a-a, b-b and c-c directions.
d) Find principal stresses and directions and maximum in-plane shear stresses
and directions.
