Title of Film: I, Robot

Genre: Science Fiction

Introduction

Introduce the film. Be sure to include any background information about the
film that may be interesting to the reader.  Also, introduce the director and
actors.  At the end of the introduction, have a thesis stating your opinion of
the film; was the film worth screening?  Be creative in your wording of the
thesis.

Answer:

The film "I, Robot" is set in Chicago in the year 2035, in a city where
spectacular modern skyscrapers coexist with iconic buildings such as the
Sears Tower. The tallest of the structures is owned by U.S. Robotics, and the
body of the company's chief robot designer is found on the floor of its atrium
lobby, apparently by suicide. Del Spooner, a detective, is on the spot.
Spooner is played by Will Smith, a Chicago Police Department detective who
does not believe it is suicide.

Despite the popular Three Laws of Robotics, which state that a robot
must not hurt a human being, he has a strong distrust of robots. Dr. Alfred
Lanning (James Cromwell) is the dead man, according to legend, the author
of the Three Laws. Every schoolchild is aware that the laws were developed
by the good doctor Isaac Asimov following a talk he had with John W.
Campbell, the iconic editor of Astounding Science Fiction.
Director:

Alex Proyas - Alex and his crew set out to create an engaging "good vs bad"
adventure film with Will Smith as the likable "everyman" hero.

Actors:

Detective Del Spooner – Spooner is the main character in the film. He was in
a car accident years ago and was rescued by a robot.

Dr. Susan Calvin – Susan is a key robot psychologist at the U.S. Robotics
corporation, where she assisted Dr. Lanning in developing a new series of
robots to replace the old ones.

VIKI – The corporation U.S. Robotics' main robot machine is called VIKI.
Since she has self-developed in a peculiar way, she has determined that
people must be stripped of their rights in order to remain secure.

Sonny – Sonny is a unique robot built by Lanning. Sonny's manners and

emotions are more human than robot, given his fully robot appearance.
Sonny has the ability to dream and interpret people's movements.

Dr. Alfred Lanning - U.S. Robotics' Lanning is a leading designer and

developer of robots. When he realized VIKI was becoming a threat, he
devised a plot to kill him that included Spooner. Spooner, he claimed, would
be able to discover the possibility of robot revolt and eliminate it.
Plot Synopsis

Provide a BRIEF plot summary of the film.  Is the plot original or cliché?  Is
the plot predictable?  Please do not give away endings, but you still must
show competent knowledge of the film.

Answer:

A police officer is called in to solve the murder of a physicist in 2035, at a

time when humans are fairly reliant on robotic assistants. The prime suspect
is a robot. Since robots aren't meant to destroy, the question is if the robot
actually murdered his owner, and if so, what's to deter the rest of the robots
from doing the same and taking over the world?
Themes

What was the main theme of the movie?  What does the movie teach about
science, technology and society?  Include what these themes are as well as
how they are conveyed to the viewer.

Answer:

Technology innovation has both benefits and pitfalls. It is wonderful that

humans monitor this creation so they can hold everything in their
possession, so if a computer, such as the robots in the film, can create
artificial intelligence on its own, it poses a huge problem for humanity.

I think the main theme of this movie is sacrifice and rebellion. Sacrifice
because, Detective Spooner was in a car accident and lost his thumb, but his
wound is much deeper because Sarah, an 11-year-old girl, died in the
ambulance. Spooner was rescued by a robot, and at the same time, Spooner
yelled at him to save the girl, but Spooner's survival rate was better than
the girl. Spooner's self-sacrifice, in which he was prepared to die rather than
the female, builds on the concept of robot-human war. Humans are
governed by impulses, while robots are ruled by cold reasoning.

The theme of possible rebellion of machines is depicted in many works

of literature, in many films and “I, Robot” is one of such. People who are
looking for new ideas are making things that may endanger their own
protection and rights. In the film, such a probability is portrayed in bright
colors. Robot revolt is a very dangerous thing, since robots are physically
much stronger than humans, and human’s ability to feel has little to do with
robot power. In movies like "I, Robot," the ending is always happy for
mankind, and some person, in this case Spooner, saves the day. In fact, if
such a situation exists, there is a slim possibility that such a man will
emerge from the crowd.

Humankind's control and knowledge of the technology it has created,

as well as humanity's control and comprehension of the technology it has
produced. Existence that is neither human nor nonhuman, as well as life that
simulates humanity's capacity to experience and be human.

Visual Elements

How was the film’s visual appearance?  Is there anything interesting about
the camera work (angles, shots, etc.) or the set designs (costumes,
locations) or the lighting (light/dark).

Answer:

For this film, Digital Domain produced over 600 effects shots, earning it an
Academy Award nomination for visual effects. Sonny, a fully CG production
built on motion-capture data of Alan Tudyk's on-set performance, is the
show's highlight. With the aid of computer-generated graphics, whole worlds
were developed and sets were expanded, in addition to the character
animation of Sonny and other robots.

Conclusion

Conclude the review with your opinion of the film. Again, the emphasis
should be on the science, technology and society issue at hand.  Be creative
and try to persuade the reader to either see or not see the film based on
your review.  Also, rate the film.  You can do this with thumbs up/down, a
scale of 1-10 or any other possibilities.

Answer:

The film, in my opinion, is all about power, science and technology

understanding. It's the realization that we can't regulate anything, and that
everything we make, even though it's for the greater good, can be used
against us. Furthermore, we do not judge someone or something merely on
the grounds of looks, but also on the basis of how it is actually made. I'm
giving it an 8 out of 10 because it's a film that's well worth seeing; you'll
learn and understand a lot after seeing it, particularly about science and
technology. Humans, in general, should be able to comprehend and
thoroughly comprehend scientific ideas. We must not abuse science and
technology's capacity and strength; rather, we must use it wisely because,
in the end, we will all prosper. Science can be very beneficial to us in our
everyday lives in a variety of ways, but its misuse, abuse, and lack of
sufficient understanding can lead to anarchy and, in the worst-case scenario,
it can completely kill or destroy us.
